The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union released their 5th edition of the high school softball rankings on Thursday. Here is a glance at each class.

In Class 1A Collins-Maxwell is top ranked. West Harrison is 11th and Westwood is 12th.

In Class 2A North Linn is the top ranked squad. West Monona is 5th. Mounty Ayr checks in at 15th.

In Class 3A Davenport Assumption remains on top. Treynor moves up a spot to 6th and Atlantic falls three spots to 13th.

In Class 4A Carlisle takes over the top spot and ADM falls to 2nd. Harlan falls out of the poll from 14th.

In Class 5A Waukee is top ranked.

FOREST CITY, Iowa (AP) — A December trial has been scheduled for a former professional football player who’s been accused of being drunk and armed with a handgun while attending a northern Iowa county board meeting. Winnebago County court records say 63-year-old Mike Stensrud pleaded not guilty Wednesday to two misdemeanors: public intoxication and carrying a firearm while under the influence. His trial is set to begin Dec. 11 at the county courthouse in Forest City.

Police say Stensrud, a Winnebago County supervisor, drank alcohol from a cup during the May 21 meeting, and an alcohol breath test showed his blood alcohol level was above the legal limit for driving. Police say the Stensrud acknowledged having a pistol, which an officer found in one of Stensrud’s pockets. Stensrud played at Iowa State before going pro. He retired from the National Football League in 1989.

(Radio Iowa) — The summer season officially arrives later this (Friday) morning and with it, an elevated risk of serious or deadly accidents as Iowans seek to cool off in the water. Mindy Uhle, an executive officer with the Iowa Department of Public Health, says if you’ll be on or near the water for fishing, boating or swimming, whether it’s a backyard pool, a lake or river, remember these life-saving tips. “We would encourage everyone to learn how to swim. Keep a close eye on your children. For young children and children who are non-swimmers, keep those kids at arm’s reach at all times,” Uhle says. “Use lifejackets, for non-swimmers and anytime you’re out boating or out doing recreational activities on lakes and rivers.”

Learning how to perform C-P-R takes two or three hours, depending on the course, and it’s a skill you can use for a lifetime. “There are lots of organizations that teach it,” Uhle says. “It is very accessible and it is something we would recommend learning if you are going to be around water or in a caregiver role.” Nationally, drowning kills more children between the ages of one and four than anything else except birth defects.

“Last year, we had 48 drowning deaths in Iowa,” Uhle says. “It’s been pretty stable. The average for the last five years is somewhere in between 40 and 50. Interestingly enough, about 70% of our drowning victims are male and almost 35% of our drowning deaths occur in lakes, rivers and streams.” A report from the Centers for Disease Control says ten people die from drowning every day nationwide, about one in every five is a child under the age of 14. (Radio Iowa) — Drake Stadium has hosted several big events but Blake Boldon calls the field for next months USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships unprecedented. Nearly 100 Olympians, including 25 who have earned Olympic gold will compete to earn a spot on the U-S squad that will compete in the World Championships in Qatar. The director of the Drake Relays will serve as director of the U-S championships and says it will feature a blend of experience and youth.

The American men and women are dominating the sprint events and that includes the men’s 100 where Americans hold down four of the top eight spots in the world rankings.

Christian Coleman and Noah Lyles will be favored in a star studded 100 that also includes American record holder Tyson Gay.

The American women are also dominating in the sprints, including the 100 hurdles, where Americans hold town four of the top five spots in the world rankings. The U-S Championships are July 25 through the 28

(Radio Iowa) — Lewis Central High School baseball coach Lee Toole reached a milestone this week. Toole became just the eighth Iowa high school baseball coach to reach 900 wins when his Titans beat Carroll Kuemper. It was a mark his family told him was fast approaching.

Toole began coaching in 1984 at New Hartford and also had a stop at Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson. He says he has been fortunate to have good teams and still loves the game.

Toole has no plans to retire buy says he is at the tail end of his career.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — JT Riddle hit a two-run homer in the 11th inning, Zac Gallen was effective in his major league debut and the Miami Marlins beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-6. Brian Anderson also went deep and drove in two runs for the Marlins, who earned a split of the four-game series.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Alex Gordon had a two-run single and Lucas Duda added an RBI single as the Kansas City Royals jumped on Jake Odorizzi in the first inning and beat the Minnesota Twins 4-1. Glenn Sparkman gave up just one run and five hits in a season high-tying seven innings. Duda, had two hits and scored a run to help the Royals win for the fourth time in five games. Odorizzi came in tied with Chicago White Sox pitcher Lucas Giolito for the major league lead with 10 wins, but lasted just four innings.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Lakers chose Iowa State’s Talen Horton-Tucker with the 46th overall pick. They also chose Virginia’s De’Andre Hunter with the fourth overall pick, but Los Angeles made that pick on behalf of the Hawks. It’s all part of the yet-to-be-announced trade that will bring Anthony Davis to Los Angeles next month.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Craig Kimbrel says there is no timetable for when he will join the Chicago Cubs. He says it will happen when his body is ready for it. Kimbrel signed a three-year, $43 million deal with Chicago earlier this month after helping Boston win the World Series in 2018. He joined Triple-A Iowa this week before his expected promotion to take over the closer’s role with Chicago.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Drew Campbell’s single off Cole Gordon drove in Danny Oriente for the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning and Louisville eliminated Mississippi State with a 4-3 victory in the College World Series. The Cardinals made up a three-run deficit to advance past a third game at the CWS for the first time in its five appearances.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Iowa State sophomore guard Tyrese Haliburton has been named to the USA Basketball U19 World Cup roster. He becomes the first Cyclone since Craig Brackins in 2009 to earn a spot on a USA Basketball roster. Brackins played in the World University Games.

Haliburton and his teammates will travel to Greece on June 24 with tournament play beginning June 29 and going through July 7.

The Oshkosh, Wisconsin native is one of five players that played college basketball last season to make the 12-man roster.
