IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa women’s basketball team will host Clemson on Wednesday, Dec. 4, in Carver-Hawkeye Arena, as part of the 2019 Big Ten/ACC Challenge. It will mark the first ever meeting between the Hawkeyes and Tigers.

The Big Ten and ACC offices collaborate to determine the challenge schedule each season. The Big Ten and ACC have been among the most competitive conferences on the national women’s basketball landscape for many years, with both conferences sending nine schools to postseason play in 2018-19.

Last year’s challenge once again proved to be among the most competitive in the event’s history, with the ACC edging the Big Ten, 8-6. Iowa is 3-9 all-time in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.

Game times, as well as television and streaming coverage, for the 2019 Big Ten/ACC Women’s Basketball Challenge will be announced at a later date.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

UNDATED (AP) — NASCAR has suspended truck driver Johnny Sauter for one race for intentionally ramming into Austin Hill during the race at Iowa. The sport’s sanctioning body announced that Sauter will be kept out of the next race outside of St. Louis for his actions. But Sauter’s postseason eligibility will not be affected.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa junior A.J. Epenesa knows he has a strong shot at being picked in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft should he choose to go pro next spring. He’s choosing not to think about it until then. Epenesa, a 6-foot-6, 280-pound defensive end who led the Big Ten with 10 1-2 sacks a year ago despite coming off the bench, is poised for a monster season in 2019.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Louisville-Auburn game at the College World Series will resume Wednesday after being suspended after the fourth inning because of rain. The Cardinals led Auburn 4-1 when the TD Ameritrade Park grounds crew rolled the tarp over the field. The Vanderbilt-Mississippi State game scheduled for Tuesday night and regularly scheduled game between Texas Tech and Florida State will follow.

SEATTLE (AP) — Whit Merrifield had two homers and a career-high six RBIs, Homer Bailey pitched into the eighth inning and the Kansas City Royals beat the Seattle Mariners 9-0. The Royals jumped on struggling starter Yusei Kikuchi to get their third straight win. Kikuchi allowed six runs in five innings. Merrifield drove a three-run homer against Kikuchi in the fourth and added a two-run shot against Jesse Biddle in the eighth. Jorge Soler also homered for the Royals, and rookie Nicky Lopez had three hits.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Rookie Jordan Yamamoto dazzled again, matching his first career start by pitching seven scoreless innings against St. Louis, and the Miami Marlins beat the Cardinals 6-0. Yamamoto allowed two hits, struck out seven and walked two. He gave up three hits in seven innings in his major league debut, on June 12 in Miami against the Cardinals. Before that game, he had not pitched above Double-A. Relievers Tayron Guerrero and Sergio Romo completed the two-hitter.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Wichita State has dismissed forward Teddy Allen after he was arrested following a disturbance at a woman’s home. Athletic director Darron Boatright says he and Coach Gregg Marshall wished Allen well but decided his dismissal was best for the basketball program. The West Virginia transfer was arrested last week after a woman accused him of causing a disturbance at her home. He was later charged with domestic violence property crime and petty theft, both misdemeanors.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Tommy Henry limited Florida State to three hits and Jesse Franklin’s first-inning home run stood up in Michigan’s 2-0 win at the College World Series. The Wolverines took control of Bracket 1 in their first CWS appearance since 1984 and need one more win Friday to reach the best-of-three finals next week. Florida State fell to 1-1 and has scored just two runs in 26 innings.

Cody Master’s first triple of the season drove in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning, Taylor Floyd held off Arkansas in the ninth, and Texas Tech stayed alive in the College World Series with a 5-4 win. The No. 8 national seed Red Raiders bounced back from a 5-3 loss to Michigan and await the loser of the game between the Wolverines and Florida State. No. 5 Arkansas was eliminated in two games a year after making it to the CWS finals.
