Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Parnell Motley intercepted Brock Purdy’s two-point conversion pass with 24 seconds left and No. 9 Oklahoma held off Iowa State 42-41. Iowa State coach Matt Campbell went for the victory on the two-point try after Charlie Kolar caught a 13-yard touchdown pass to pull the Cyclones _ down 42-21 in the second half _ within one.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Jonathan Taylor rushed for a season-high 250 yards and Danny Davis ran for a touchdown and caught another as No. 16 Wisconsin outlasted No. 18 Iowa 24-22. Wisconsin stopped Iowa quarterback Nate Stanley short of the goal line on a potential game-tying two-point conversion attempt with 3:12 remaining.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Will McElvain threw a touchdown pass and Trevor Allen ran for another score in the first half, and Northern Iowa held off Indiana State for a 17-9 victory. Indiana State drove to the Northern Iowa 38 with about two minutes left but turned the ball over. The FCS seventh-ranked Panthers remain a game back of conference leader and top-ranked North Dakota State. Indiana State has lost four straight games.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Cameron Dicker kicked a 26-yard field goal as time expired to give Texas a 27-24 victory over No. 20 Kansas State on Saturday. The Longhorns needed the victory if they hope to return to the Big 12 championship game. Dicker has won games on the final play twice this season. His field goal beat Kansas on Oct. 19. Keaontay Ingram rushed for 139 yards and two second-half touchdowns for the Longhorns.

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Jake Fromm threw two touchdown passes to George Pickens and Georgia posted its third shutout by dominating Missouri 27-0. The Tigers were without quarterback Kelly Bryant and top wide receiver Johnathon Johnson. Missouri suffered its third straight loss.

No. 9 Oklahoma escapes with 42-41 victory over Iowa State

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Iowa State coach Matt Campbell saw an opportunity to seize a win that would boost the Cyclones’ chances of reaching the Big 12 title game, so he put everything on quarterback Brock Purdy. His gamble failed. Parnell Motley intercepted Purdy’s two-point conversion pass with 24 seconds left, and No. 9 Oklahoma held off Iowa State 42-41 on Saturday night. And now, Iowa State’s conference title hopes are bleak.

Campbell went for the victory on the two-point try after Charlie Kolar caught a 13-yard touchdown pass to pull the Cyclones — down 42-21 in the second half — within one. Campbell said he didn’t regret going for two because Purdy already had passed for 282 yards and five touchdowns and rushed for 55 yards and another score.

Jalen Hurts passed for 273 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 68 yards and two more scores for the Sooners (8-1, 5-1 Big 12, No. 9 CFP). CeeDee Lamb had 167 yards and two touchdowns receiving and Kennedy Brooks ran for a season-high 132 yards to help Oklahoma bounce back from a loss to Kansas State two weeks ago. Oklahoma extended its November winning streak to 18 games and set up a showdown at league-leading Baylor next week. Breece Hall rushed for 110 yards for the Cyclones (5-4, 3-3).

All four of the Cyclones’ losses are by seven or fewer points. The Cyclones are a play here and there from a special season. UP NEXT: Iowa State hosts Texas on Saturday.

Taylor helps No. 16 Wisconsin outlast No. 18 Iowa 24-22

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Jonathan Taylor rushed for a season-high 250 yards and Danny Davis ran for a touchdown and caught another as No. 16 Wisconsin outlasted No. 18 Iowa 24-22 on Saturday. Taylor became the first running back this season to rush for more than 100 yards against Iowa as Wisconsin (7-2, 4-2 Big Ten, No. 13 College Football Playoff) held on to the Heartland Trophy, given each year to the winner of this game. Wisconsin has beaten Iowa four straight times.

Quintez Cephus caught five passes for 94 yards and a score to help Wisconsin stay in contention for the Big Ten West crown. The Hawkeyes entered the day allowing only 10.1 points per game, the lowest average in coach Kirk Ferentz’s 21 seasons at Iowa. But the Hawkeyes allowed a season high in points and were outgained 473-295. Iowa fell to 0-3 this season against ranked teams. The Hawkeyes also lost to Michigan and Penn State earlier in the year.

Iowa could find itself on the outside of the AP Top 25 and CFP rankings next week. Wisconsin positions itself nicely with winnable games against Nebraska and Purdue remaining and a showdown at No. 13 Minnesota (No. 17 CFP) on Nov. 30.

Garza’s double-double helps Iowa to 87-60 win over SIUE

Sports

November 9th, 2019 by admin

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — It wasn’t an overstatement, Fran McCaffery said.

Asked about junior center Luka Garza, McCaffery, Iowa’s basketball coach said, “He’s one of the hardest working guys I’ve ever been around. That’s no exaggeration. He never takes a possession off at either end.”

Garza showed that work ethic on Friday night, opening the season with a double-double and Iowa pulled away in the second half for an 87-60 win over SIU-Edwardsville.

Garza, Iowa’s leading returning scorer from a team that reached the second round of the NCAA tournament last season, had 20 points and 12 rebounds as the Hawkeyes won their season opener.

It was the sixth double-double of Garza’s career.

“I think we just really followed the game plan,” said Garza, who had 14 points and seven rebounds in the first half. “We really wanted to get the ball inside. I was just able to be put into great positions by my teammates who tried to get me the ball. And when they put me into those positions, I’m going to try to find a way to score.”

Garza took over inside where forward Tyler Cook, Iowa’s leading scorer last season before leaving for a professional career, left off.

“I just worked a lot over the summer, tried to get stronger,” Garza said. “Now that I moved into TC’s position at the ‘5’, I’m more of a true center, for sure.”

Joe Wieskamp had 16 points for the Hawkeyes.

Iowa struggled early, with SIUE getting to within 26-22 late in the first half. But the Hawkeyes went on a 12-4 run, started by a 3-pointer from senior guard Jordan Bohannon, to close the half then opened the second half with a 17-8 run over the first six minutes.

Kenyon Duling and Cam Williams each had 10 points for SIUE (1-1).

That’s ISU coach Matt Campbell who says a loss to Oklahoma State showed the Cyclones need a complete effort to win.

Campbell says the Sooners have one of the nation’s top quarterbacks in Jalen Hurts.

Kick-off from Memorial Stadium in Norman, Oklahoma, is at 7-p.m. on Fox Sports.

No. 18 Iowa visits No. 16 Wisconsin

Sports

November 9th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) — Iowa needs a victory at 16th ranked Wisconsin today (Saturday), to climb back into the Big Ten West race. Iowa needs more production out of a Nate Stanley led offense than two years ago when the Hawkeye offense failed to score in a 38-14 loss in Madison.

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz. The Badgers have steamrolled opponents at home and Ferentz says the Hawkeyes need to stay in the game early and limit mistakes.

Iowa’s offense has only scored a total of 32 points in the last four games in the series.

You can hear the game on this afternoon, on KJAN. Pre-game coverage begins at 1-p.m., with the kick-off from Camp Randall Stadium, Madison, Wis. at 3-p.m.
