Audubon and CAM ready for exciting Quarterfinal clash

Sports

November 7th, 2019 by admin

The CAM Cougars (8-2) and the Audubon Wheelers (10-1) meet on the gridiron Friday night with a trip to the UNI-Dome on the line. We’ll have coverage of the exciting Quarterfinal round match-up on KJAN with pregame starting at 6:00pm and kickoff at 7:00pm.

It’s been just two weeks since the two teams met for the final game of the regular season, a game that saw the Wheelers come out on top 19-16. Audubon Head Coach Sean Birks and CAM Head Coach Joe Wollum had similar sentiments with both teams knowing what to expect from the other, it just comes down to which team can execute.

The Wheelers notched a 48-20 win in the first round of the playoffs over Harris-Lake Park. Kaiden Smith had a huge game in that one with 3 rushing touchdowns, 1 receiving, and 1 passing score. The Wheelers have a lot of guys they can turn to come up big and Coach Birks said it’s a pleasure to coach this group.

Coach Wollum said it’s difficult to defend the Wheelers because they can throw so many things at you.

CAM’s first round playoff game was a 62-24 route at Lamoni. The ground game got churning in that one for the Cougars and the defense was able to slow down the Demons star quarterback Patrick Savage. The Cougars have been able to run the ball well and stop the run well on the other side with an experienced line. Coach Birks said it’s hard to pick your spots against the Cougars front line.

Both teams have been well battle tested and both teams have a wealth of experienced players. Coach Wollum said the battle on the line of scrimmage between the six seniors there will be fun to watch.

The winner of this one will get to move on to play in the 8-Man Semifinals next Thursday at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls. It would be the Wheelers first trip to the Semifinals since a 1989 appearance in Class 2A play. The Cougars have never been to the semifinals as the CAM district. Chris Parks and Seth Christensen will have the call from Chis Jones Field in Audubon with pregame at 6:00pm and kickoff at 7:00pm. Catch the game on AM1220, FM101.1, or listen online at kjan.com Stay tuned after the game for all the Quarterfinal round playoff scores on the Iowa High School Scoreboard Show from 10:00pm-11:30pm.

Sports

November 7th, 2019 by admin

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa football junior kicker Keith Duncan is one of 20 semifinalists for the 2019 Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award. The announcement was made Thursday by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission, presented by the Orange Bowl. Three finalists will be announced on Nov. 25.

Duncan, a native of Weddington, North Carolina, leads the nation with 19 made field goals. He has connected on 19-of-22 attempts overall, including 10-of-12 from 40 yards and beyond. He is also a perfect 18-of-18 on PAT kicks and leads the Hawkeyes in scoring with 75 points.

Duncan connected on all four of his field goal attempts in Iowa’s 26-20 Homecoming win over Purdue. He also made all four field goal attempts in Iowa’s 18-17 win at Iowa State, including the game-winner in the final five minutes of action.

Duncan was recognized by the Lou Groza Award following his play in the wins over Iowa State and Purdue.

Duncan has scored 140 career points to rank 22nd in Iowa career scoring. His career totals include 28-of-33 field goals and 56-of-57 PAT attempts, with his only missed PAT being blocked. His 19 field goals in 2019 tie for the fifth best single-season total at Iowa.

Former Iowa kicker Nate Kaeding earned the Lou Groza Award in 2002 and was a finalist in 2003. Kyle Schlicher was a semifinalist for the award in 2005 and Mike Meyer was a semifinalist in both 2011 and 2012.

No. 18 Iowa travels to play at No. 13 Wisconsin on Saturday (3:05 p.m. CT). The game will be televised on FOX. We’ll have coverage on KJAN with pregame at 1:00pm on the Hawkeye Radio Network.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs will continue to split first-team reps in practice between Patrick Mahomes and backup Matt Moore this week, leaving open the possibility the league’s MVP could be back for Sunday’s game at Tennessee. Mahomes has been out since dislocating his kneecap in a game against Denver on Oct. 17. He has yet to miss a practice but was ruled out for the Chiefs’ game against Green Bay, then was questionable last week against Minnesota before he was declared inactive on game day.

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — Alex Pietrangelo had a goal and two assists and the St. Louis Blues remained atop the Western Conference standings, beating the second-place Edmonton Oilers 5-2 for their sixth straight victory. Jaden Schwartz, Robert Thomas, Tyler Bozak and Ivan Barbashev also scored for the defending champion Blues.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — While LSU, Alabama and Georgia are working on their College Football Playoff credentials, much of the Southeastern Conference would regard those as rich program problems. Teams like South Carolina, Tennessee, Mississippi State and Kentucky are battling for bowl eligibility.

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Jeremiah Tilmon scored 16 points and blocked five shots to lead Missouri to an 82-42 victory over Incarnate Word in the season opener for both teams.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Vanderbilt ended a 20-game losing streak in Jerry Stackhouse’s coaching debut, and Aaron Nesmith led the way with 25 points, including a career-high seven 3-pointers in an 83-65 win over Southeast Missouri State. Stackhouse inherited a 9-23 team that is coming off the worst season in school history, including a 0-18 record in the Southeastern Conference under former coach Bryce Drew.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Senior Michael Jacobson led seven Cyclones in double figures with 20 points and nine rebounds and Iowa State throttled Mississippi Valley State 110-74 in its season opener. Tyrese Haliburton had 12 points, 14 assists, seven rebounds and six steals for the Cyclones, who improved to 7-0 against the Delta Devils.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Reserve DJ McDonald scored a career-high 15 points, Dragan Elkaz added 14 and George Willborn III had 13 as UC Riverside upset Nebraska 66-47 to spoil Fred Hoiberg’s coaching debut with the Cornhuskers. The Big West’s Highlanders, who went 10-23 last season and have had one winning season since joining Division I in 2000, won for the first time over a Power Five opponent since beating California in November 2017. Nebraska lost a season opener at home for the first time since 1980.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — No. 18 Iowa is preparing for this weekend’s visit to No. 16 Wisconsin. The Hawkeyes have one of the top defenses in the country. It will be challenged by Badgers running back Jonathan Taylor. Wisconsin has the nation’s top-ranked defense, and the Hawkeyes say they know it will be a physical road game on Saturday.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State entered this season with its highest expectations in years. The next two weeks will determine whether the Cyclones can meet those lofty goals. Iowa State which had a bye last week after an upset loss to Oklahoma State, is facing one of the more important two-week stretches in recent memory. The Cyclones play at No. 9 Oklahoma before hosting Texas.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Cardinals manager Mike Shildt has been given a new three-year contract through the 2022 season. Shildt was hired in 2018 and his initial deal ran through 2020. St. Louis also announced president of baseball operations John Mozeliak received a three-year extension through 2023. The Cardinals exercised a 2020 option on general manager Mike Girsch and gave him a two-year extension through 2022.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs and team President Mark Donovan have signed a long-term contract extension. Terms were not disclosed. Donovan joined the Chiefs as chief operating officer in 2009 and was promoted to team president in 2011.
