AMES, Iowa (AP) — Point guard Tyrese Haliburton stuffed the box score in a spectacular opener for Iowa State. It likely won’t be the last time the Cyclones’ sophomore dominates multiple aspects of a game in 2019-20. Senior Michael Jacobson led seven Cyclones in double figures with 20 points and nine rebounds and Iowa State throttled Mississippi Valley State 110-74 in its season opener on Tuesday. But Haliburton stole the show with 12 points, 14 assists, seven rebounds and six steals for the Cyclones. Led by Haliburton’s elite distribution, Iowa State had 32 assists, three shy of the school record, on 45 made baskets.

St. Albert rides big runs to win over Riverside, punches ticket to State

The St. Albert Saintes used some big runs to take control of the Class 1A Region 2 Final against Riverside on Tuesday night at Tri-Center High School. The Saintes came away with a 3-0 victory 25-19, 25-7, 25-19 and will head to the State tournament for the fourth time in five years.

The Bulldogs got off to a nice start on the night with a 5-1 lead to begin the opening set. It was a good back and forth battle for much of that set until St. Albert used a five point run to go ahead 18-16. Riverside got the next two to tie it up, but the Saintes ripped off 4 straight and 3 straight to seal the win.

The second set went a little differently. After a 3-3 start, the Saintes went on a 12 point rally to grab control of the set and moved on to a 25-7 victory.

The third set was largely a back and forth affair with 11 ties before St. Albert grabbed momentum with a 10 point run. The Bulldogs fought hard to the end but the Saintes ultimately won the match with a 25-19 set 3 score.

St. Albert Head Coach Angie Lantz said her team played with great confidence across the board.

St. Albert missed out on a trip to state last year with a five set loss in the Regional Final but made it to the Semifinals in 2016 and 2017. Coach Lantz said the girls were motivated to get back to the State Tournament.

The Saintes will play in the Quarterfinals on Wednesday evening at the US Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids.

November 5th, 2019 by admin

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – November 5, 2019 – The St. Louis Cardinals made several announcements today during an afternoon press conference at Busch Stadium, including contract extensions for President Of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak, Vice President & General Manager Michael Girsch and Manager Mike Shildt.

“Mo and his staff have helped to consistently guide our organization over the past 12 seasons, and after some recent close finishes, we were excited to see the team win the N.L. Central this season, and advance to the League Championship Series,” stated Cardinals’ Chairman Bill DeWitt, Jr.  “I’m pleased to announce today that Mo has agreed to continue to the lead our baseball operations into the next decade.”

Mozeliak, who joined the Cardinals organization in 1995, served as Senior Vice President & General Manager from October of 2007 to June of 2017, when he was promoted to the newly–created position of President of Baseball Operations.  The Cardinals have advanced to the postseason in seven of their 12 seasons under Mozeliak, including two N.L. Championships and a World Series title in 2011.  The Cardinals 73 postseason games during Mozeliak’s tenure are 2nd most in the majors, trailing only the Dodgers (82).

“I’m personally excited to remain with the Cardinals organization and thrilled to continue to lead our baseball operations group,’ stated Mozeliak.  “We will continue to explore all avenues to make sure the Cardinals remain at the forefront as our Game continues to evolve.”

Girsch, who was named V.P. & General Manager in June of 2017, and has been a member of the Cardinals organization since 2006, oversaw the team’s first division title since 2015 this past season.

Shildt, named yesterday as a finalist for this BBWAA N.L. Manager of the Year Award, guided the team to a share of its 12th N.L. Central title in his first full season at the helm, overseeing a transformation of the team’s defense with record-setting performances, as the Cardinals became the first Major League team in history to go from worst to first in errors in back-to-back seasons.  The Cardinals are 132-99 (.571 winning pct.) under Shildt since he was named interim manager on July 15, 2018.  His new three-year contract extends thru the 2022 season.

The Cardinals also announced today that the entire Major League coaching staff will return in 2020; Hitting Coach Jeff Albert, First Base Coach Stubby Clapp, Bullpen Coach Bryan Eversgerd, Assistant Hitting Coach Jobel Jimenez, Pitching Coach Mike Maddux, Bench Coach Oliver Marmol, Coach Willie McGee and Third Base Coach Ron “Pop” Warner.

The team also announced a number of promotions within their Baseball Operations staff today:

·       Jeremy Cohen – Senior Director, Baseball Development;

·       Kevin Seats – Baseball Analytics Director;

·       Patrick Casanta – Systems Director;

·       Matt Bayer – Project Director;

·       Javier Duran – Coordinator, Technology & Innovation;

·       Tyler Hadzinsky – Assistant Director of Scouting

November 5th, 2019 by admin

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State sophomore Tyrese Haliburton has been named to the 2020 Wooden Award watch list that was announced Tuesday. Haliburton is one of 50 preseason candidates for the award.

A preseason All-Big 12 selection, Haliburton played in all 35 games and started the final 34 for the Cyclones as a freshman. The Oshkosh, Wisconsin native was named to the Naismith Trophy Watch List yesterday. He won a Gold medal last summer for the USA Basketball Men’s U19 World Cup team, earning a spot on the tournament’s All-Star Five.

Collin Olson a nominee for the Burlsworth Trophy

Sports

Colin Olson

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State senior offensive lineman Collin Olson has been named a nominee for the Burlsworth Trophy, announced today by the Burlsworth Foundation.

The Burlsworth Trophy is named in honor of Brandon Burlsworth and is given annually to the nation’s most outstanding football player who began his career as a walk-on and has shown outstanding performance on the field.

A native of Ankeny, Iowa, Olson had zero Division I offers out of high school. He decided to join the Iowa State football team as a walk-on, spending three years as a practice player on the defensive line.

In the Spring of 2018, Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell asked Olson if he could move to the offensive line. For the good of the team, Olson accepted and started working with the offensive line heading into his redshirt junior season.

Olson was inserted into the starting lineup at guard after the second game of the 2018 season and has been a solid force in a unit that has helped the offense break several school records.

Olson, who was placed on scholarship prior to the start of the 2019 season, has started the last 19 games for the Cyclones. After the season-opener vs. UNI, Iowa State’s starting center Colin Newell went down with an injury. Olson moved over to center and made a seamless transition.

The Cyclones are on pace to break school season records in total offense (479.5), scoring (35.9), passing offense (328.4) and yards per play (6.9) thanks to Olson’s efforts.

The Burlsworth Foundation, in conjunction with the Springdale Rotary Club, will host an awards ceremony on December 9 to honor the three finalists and to announce the 2019 winner.
