Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Stakes will be high when Nebraska hosts No. 19 Iowa on Friday. The Cornhuskers are playing for bowl eligibility against an opponent that has won four straight in the series. Nebraska’s Collin Miller said the Huskers and Hawks simply don’t like each other. The annual Black Friday game goes on a two-year hiatus after this season. Nebraska plays Minnesota on the day after Thanksgiving the next two years.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — After the Chiefs watched the Raiders lose to the Jets on Sunday, they return from their bye with a chance to face Oakland themselves. Beating their longtime rival on Sunday would give Kansas City a stranglehold on a fourth consecutive AFC West title.

LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) — Devin Dotson scored 19 points, Udoka Azubuike added 15 despite early foul trouble and No. 4 Kansas cruised to a 93-63 victory over Division II Chaminade at the Maui Invitational. The Jayhawks jumped on the Silverswords with a huge early run and never let up, shooting 55% while making 12 of 29 from 3-point range.

UNDATED (AP) — The Maui Invitational featuring Kansas and Michigan State, and the Battle 4 Atlantis with North Carolina and Gonzaga, are the headlining holiday tournaments this week. But just about every program with NCAA Tournament expectations will be in action, whether that’s trying to bring home a trophy or tuning up against a non-conference foe.

GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands (AP) — Haanif Cheatham scored 19 points and Jervay Green scored 14 and Nebraska pulled away for an 82-71 win over Washington State in the Cayman Islands Classic. Cheatham and Green combined for 26 points in the second half.

UNDATED (AP) — Duke solidified its grip on No. 1 while the top four teams remained the same after a quiet week on the schedule in the AP Top 25 men’s college basketball poll. The Blue Devils received 53 first-place votes from the 65-member media panel. Louisville received seven first-place votes and remained second, followed by Michigan State with four No. 1 nods. Kansas remained fourth while Maryland leapfrogged North Carolina into fifth. No. 24 Florida was only newcomer to the poll. Texas dropped out.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kamar Baldwin and Bryce Golden had 13 points each and Butler beat Missouri 63-52 in front of a large crowd of Tigers fans to advance to the championship game of the Hall of Fame Classic. Dru Smith had 19 points while Xavier Pinson contributed 10 and Kobe Brown had nine for the Tigers.

Joens named Big 12 Player of the Week

Sports

November 25th, 2019 by admin

IRVING, Texas – Iowa State sophomore Ashley Joens claimed her first Big 12 Player of the Week honor of her career, the league announced Monday.

Ashley Joens had the biggest week of her career, totaling 56 points and 34 rebounds in just two games. Against Texas Southern, Joens’ night was nothing short of historic, and she completed the first 30-20 game in ISU women’s basketball history. In doing so, she became just the fourth Big 12 player to complete a 30-20 game since 1999-00, joining Brittney Griner, Courtney Paris and Danielle Crockrom.

Joens did not let up as she helped ISU to their first road win of the season. Joens tallied 26 points and 14 boards against the Bison, for her fourth career double-double and second straight. On the week the Iowa City, Iowa native averaged 28.0 points and 17.0 rebounds.

Joens is currently first in the Big 12 in scoring, with 24.3 points and third nationally. She is also third in the Big 12 with 12.3 rebounds per game and 10th in the nation. Joens was named Big 12 Freshman of the Week three times last season.

Joens and the Cyclones are back in action on Friday, Nov. 29 at 6:30 p.m. when they take on UAPB on Cyclones.tv.

Duncan Named Finalist for Lou Groza Award

Sports

November 25th, 2019 by admin

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa kicker Keith Duncan has been named one of three finalists for the Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award. The announcement was made Monday by the Palm Beach Country Sports Commission, presented by the Orange Bowl.

Narrowed down from 20 semifinalists, Georgia’s Rodrigo Blankenship and Washington State’s Blake Mazza are the other two finalists. Iowa’s Nate Kaeding won the award in 2002 and was a finalist in 2003.

Duncan (5-foot-10, 180-pounds), a Weddington, North Carolina, native, was named the Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week earlier Monday. He connected on four field goals (23, 45, 24, 29) in Iowa’s win over Illinois to break the Big Ten and Iowa single-season record with 27 made field goals. The four made field goals ties a career high (Iowa State, Purdue) and his six field goal attempts were a career-best.

This season, Duncan is 27-of-32 on field goal attempts, 12-of-16 on field goals of 40 or more yards, and a perfect 22-of-22 on PATs. Duncan’s 36 career made field goals are the sixth-most all-time in program history.

Duncan was recognized by the Lou Groza Award following his play in wins over Iowa State and Purdue.

The winner of the award will be announced live on ESPN at the Home Depot College Football Awards Show Thursday, Dec. 12.

The Hawkeyes wrap up the regular season Friday (1:30 p.m. (CT), BTN), traveling to Lincoln to face Nebraska in the Hy-Vee Heroes Game at Memorial Stadium.
