Iowa State’s Campbell agrees to contract extension through 2025

Sports

December 3rd, 2019 by admin

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State football coach Matt Campbell has agreed to a contract extension through the 2025 season.

“I greatly appreciate Dr. (Wendy) Wintersteen’s and (Iowa State AD) Jamie’s (Pollard) proactive approach to extending my contract,” Campbell said. “My staff and I will be on the road this week actively recruiting the next class of Cyclones and it is important for recruits and their families to understand my commitment to Iowa State.”

Campbell guided his 2019 team to a tie for third place in the Big 12 and a berth in a bowl game for the third season in a row. The Cyclones were 7-5 overall and appeared in the College Football Playoff rankings for the third consecutive year.

“Both Matt and I wanted to send a message to our fans and recruits and their families, that he is excited about the future of our football program,” Pollard said. “We are fortunate to have Matt leading our student-athletes and look forward to the continued success of our football program.”

Details of Coach Campbell’s contract extension will be released at a later date.

The football team will play in a bowl game for the third straight year with the opportunity to achieve three eight-win seasons in a row for only the second time in school history.

Iowa State will learn of its bowl destination Sunday.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

UNDATED (AP) — No. 1 Louisville faces No. 4 Michigan after both climb the AP Top 25. The Cardinals moved to No. 1 for the first time in 6 years in this week’s poll. The Wolverines matched the biggest climb for an unranked team in the 70-year history of the poll by hitting No. 4 after winning the Battle 4 Atlantis.

NEW YORK (AP) — Missouri State coach Amaka Agugua-Hamilton was still playing for Hofstra the last time the Lady Bears appeared in the poll 15 years ago. Now the first-year coach has the team in The Associated Press women’s basketball Top 25 this week at No. 22.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The biggest culprit in the Kansas City Chiefs’ loss to the New England Patriots in last season’s AFC championship game was their defense. It failed to stop Tom Brady and Co. down the stretch and in overtime in a crushing home defeat. With a trip to New England looming Sunday, the Chiefs’ revamped defense is finally rounding into form.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Royals and left-hander Mike Montgomery have agreed to a $3.1 million contract for next season to avoid salary arbitration. The club’s once-heralded prospect returned to Kansas City last season as part of a trade with the Cubs. He went 2-7 with a 4.64 ERA down the stretch. The numbers were good enough for the Royals to believe Montgomery could be part of the rotation next season. Montgomery made $2.44 million last season. He is 23-34 with a 3.83 ERA in 180 career appearances.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Xavier Sneed had 18 points, Mike McGuirl scored 16 and Cartier Diarra provided 11 and Kansas State beat Florida A&M 76-58. Evins Desir led the Rattlers with 18 points and eight rebounds and M.J. Randolph scored 10 in the game.
