AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State defensive back Mike Johnson has been suspended from the team following his arrest on a domestic assault charge involving his live-in girlfriend.

A criminal complaint filed by a university police officer says Johnson was arrested early Thursday following an argument with his girlfriend over social media posts and the music each was playing on their phones. Police say the altercation became physical when the two grabbed and damaged the other’s cellphone.

Police say the woman told police that Johnson choked her, and officers noted she had a swollen upper lip and bruises to her face and head.

Iowa State coach Matt Campbell said in a statement that the program has “zero tolerance for domestic violence” and that Johnson has been suspended from all team activities, including practice.

The Atlantic Trojans will play host to the ADM Tigers in a Class 3A District 15 boys basketball final tonight.  The Trojans came up with a solid second half effort in the first round to beat Winterset 58-45 in the first round.  ADM beat Harlan in the opening round in Atlantic Monday 65-51. Despite just a 12-10 record on the season Atlantic Head Coach Alan Jenkins says ADM presents a good challenge for the 17-5 Trojans.

The game is set to tip-off at 7:00pm at Atlantic High School. Chris Parks and Mike Smith will have the broadcast tonight on KJAN with pre-game set to begin at 6:50pm.

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) — Niels Bunschoten had 20 points and made 6 of 10 from the field and Indiana State never trailed on its way to a 69-59 win over Northern Iowa on Wednesday night. Brenton Scott added 14 points and Everett Clemons scored 12 and grabbed 13 rebounds for the Sycamores (11-18, 5-12 Missouri Valley Conference) who led 69-59 at the break and kept the lead in double digits for most of the second half.

Bennett Koch had 16 points for the Panthers (14-14, 9-8), Jeremy Morgan added 14 and Jordan Ashton 13. Indiana State made 11 of 18 from 3-point range and finished 25 for 49 from the field. Northern Iowa made just 8 of 26 from 3-point range.

CHICAGO (AP) — Ben Richardson, Milton Doyle, and Aundre Jackson each scored 16 points, and Donte Ingram scored 14 points to go along with 11 rebounds and Loyola of Chicago beat Drake 80-65 on Wednesday.

With a 33-32 lead at halftime, Loyola of Chicago (18-12, 8-9 Missouri Valley) took control after the break on a pair of Doyle 3-pointers. Jackson had a 3-point play and layup and Richardson’s layup made it 45-34 with 16:27 remaining.

Reed Timmer made a 3-pointer for Drake (7-22, 5-12) to bring it within 56-47 but that was the last time the Bulldogs would trail by less than double digits. Richardson nailed a 3, and Cameron Satterwhite made two free throws and the Ramblers led 75-53 with 4:55 left.

The Ramblers outrebounded Drake 40-29 and shot 33 for 65 (51 percent) from the floor. Richardson was 6-for-7 shooting including 3 for 3 from 3-point range.

Graham Woodward led Drake with 14 points and Timmer chipped in 13.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — New Iowa State wrestling coach Kevin Dresser saw the opportunity to leave a secure gig at Virginia Tech to lead the scuffling Cyclones as a “chance to come home.” Dresser, a native of Humboldt, Iowa and a former All-American for the Hawkeyes, was introduced Wednesday. Dresser left Virginia Tech after 11 seasons to take over a Cyclones program that had fallen substantially during the final years of Kevin Jackson’s eight-year tenure.

Iowa State has won just one of 13 dual meets this season. Dresser noted, “We have to understand patience a little bit.”

The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union released the pairings for the Class 4A and 5A state basketball tournaments following regional final play on Tuesday night.
