Atlantic boys battle Glenwood for state berth tonight

Sports

February 27th, 2017 by admin

The Atlantic boys basketball team will battle the Glenwood Rams tonight for a trip to the state tournament.  The Class 3A Substate 8 final is set to tip-off at 7:00pm at the Harlan Community High School gym and we’ll have coverage on KJAN.

The Trojans earned their way into the substate round with an emphatic win on Thursday at home against ADM 68-46.  Scott Leonard had 24 points and Garrett Franken 22 in that win. The Trojans now will try to beat the Glenwood Rams for the third time this season.  Atlantic won the first meeting at home on December 13th 72-67.  They then won on the road at Glenwood on January 10th 68-62.  Atlantic Head Coach Alan Jenkins knows it will be a tough game.

The Trojans also surely remember being knocked out of the postseason last year by the Rams in a District Final 63-61. The Trojans had a 20 point lead at halftime of that game as well so neither time is likely to get comfortable as they meet tonight.  Glenwood is 18-5 on the season this year and have been led by three players averaging double figures; Nat Mohr with 19 per outing, Andrew Blum 17, and Christian Stanislav 16.

The 18-5 Trojans’ top scorer is Senior Garrett Franken averaging 24 points along with 9 rebounds per game. Two other Trojans have averaged double figures in Scoring; Scott Leonard 15, and Austin Alexander 12.

We’ll have coverage of the Trojans and Rams in the Substate 8 Final tonight on KJAN. Pregame at 6:50pm and tip-off at 7:00pm in Harlan.

Spartans ready for state tourney game with Sidney

Sports

February 27th, 2017 by admin

It will be a Western Iowa match-up this afternoon in the quarterfinal round of the Girls Class 1A State Basketball Tournament as Exira-EHK takes on Sidney.  The 23-1 Spartans will face the 23-1 Cowgirls at Well Fargo Arena today with a 3:15pm scheduled tip-off and we’ll have it on KJAN.

The Spartans earned their way to a third straight appearance in the state tournament with substate final win over Akron-Westfield.  Now the Spartans are looking to have success on the big stage.  Two seasons ago they were able to make it to the semifinal round and last season they fell in the opening round to Newell-Fonda.  Junior Sophia Peppers said after the substate win that they will be playing with confidence and are looking to succeed at state.

The Sidney Cowgirls are making their first ever state tournament appearance. They knocked off Glidden-Ralston in the substate round and are working behind the same Head Coach that just led them to the state volleyball tournament in Amy McClintock.  Maddy Duncan leads Sidney in scoring with 15 points per game and Maryn Phillips has averaged 14.  Coach McClintock said her team has a similar style of play to the Spartans.

When asked about handling the pressure defense of the Spartans, Coach McClintock said her team needs to play within themselves and a big part of that will be the coaching staff getting them ready for the moment since they haven’t been there before.

The Spartans have four players that average in double figures in Sophia Peppers with 17, Kealey Nelson 13, Maggie Rasmussen and Mara Burmeister 12.  Peppers has had a terrific postseason run scoring a combined 58 points in the last two games alone.

Chris Parks and Mike Smith will have the call of the Spartans and Cowgirls today on KJAN. Pregame at 2:15pm and tip-off at 3:15pm from Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

Cardinals’ Wong still bothered by right shoulder injury

Sports

February 26th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Kolten Wong is still bothered by a right shoulder injury from a tumble he took while playing left field last September at Wrigley Field. The St. Louis Cardinals second baseman said Saturday he’s been dealing with “tenderness” in the shoulder. He received a cortisone shot in the shoulder at the end of the season, and the right-handed thrower didn’t pick up a ball until January.

The shoulder troubles Wong when he throws. He has had an MRI but says he does “not yet” need surgery. Wong has been on a limited throwing program since spring training began and did not play in St. Louis’ Grapefruit League opener on Saturday. He did take infield before the game.

Manager Mike Matheny expects Wong could play as soon as today (Sunday). Wong is not expected to play any outfield this season.
