The Atlantic boys basketball team climbed out of a 6-point halftime deficit to Glenwood by erupting for a *29-8 advantage in the third quarter Tuesday night. The Trojans were efficient down the stretch and secured an 85-74 victory over the Class 3A 8th rated Rams. The Trojans led 18-16 at the end of the first quarter but the Rams grabbed back some momentum in the second. A shot at the buzzer before halftime by Cade Van Ness gave Glenwood a 41-35 halftime lead.

Halftime would flip a switch for the Trojans. Atlantic got hot from downtown and forced some timely turnovers in the third quarter to grab a lead that would grow to as much as 15. Chase Mullenix hit a three late in the quarter and Atlantic got the ball back with just a few seconds left in the period. Skyler Handlos fresh off the bench nailed a three from the right side at the horn to give Atlantic a ton of momentum heading into the fourth. The Trojans hit 6 threes off the hands of five different players in that big third quarter run.

Glenwood would get it all the way back to a three point game late in the fourth but Atlantic secured the win at the foul line. The Trojans went 13 of 17 at the charity stripe in the fourth, including six straight makes from Chase Mullenix.

Chase Mullenix was the leading scorer with 31 points on the night for the Trojans. Tyler Moen dropped in 23 and Logan Reilly had 11 for Atlantic. With the win Atlantic moves to 3-2 on the season and will host Shenandoah on Friday night.

Christian Stanislav led the Rams with 34 points and Zach Carr had 15. Glenwood falls to 3-2 and will host Denison-Schleswig on Friday.

The Glenwood girls basketball team grabbed control early and never looked back in a 67-39 win over Atlantic on Tuesday night. The Rams raced out to a 19-2 lead by the end of the first and led 32-8 at halftime. Turnovers were a huge factor as the Trojans had 17 giveaways in the first half and 28 for the game.

Glenwood spread the scoring out as well with all but one Ram in the scorebook getting some points on the night. Elle Scarborough led the way with 15 points and Brooklyn Taylor had 9. The Rams improved to 4-2 on the season and will next host Denison-Schleswig on Friday.

Atlantic was led by McKenzie Waters with 12 points. The Trojans fell to 0-6 on the season and they will travel to Shenandoah on Friday.

The Atlantic Trojans will play host to the Glenwood Rams for a Hawkeye Ten hoops doubleheader on Tuesday night and we’ll have coverage on KJAN.

In the girls game Atlantic will be searching for their first win of the season. The Trojans come in at 0-5 and got beat up on the boards in a 72-55 loss at Creston in their last outing on Friday. Glenwood is 3-2 on the season and won their last outing on Saturday over St. Albert 57-44. The Trojans have been led by 11 points per game from Baylee Newell while the Rams have been fronted by Elle Scarborough’s 14 points per outing.

The boys game will feature the 2-2 Trojans against the 3-1 Rams. The Trojans are coming off a tight loss to Creston on Friday night 60-57. The Trojans have gotten 22 points per game from senior Chase Mullenix. Glenwood picked up a 61-43 win over St. Albert on Saturday. The defending State Champs have been led by Christian Stanislav’s 26 points per game, while sophomore Ryan Blum has averaged 17 per outing.

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State will host Tulane in the championship match of the 2018 National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC) on Tuesday (Dec. 11) at 6:30 p.m., the NIVC announced Saturday night. The announcement comes following Tulane’s four-set win at home over College of Charleston in the other semifinal.

Earlier on Saturday afternoon, Iowa State booked its trip to the final with a 3-1 win over UNLV inside Hilton Coliseum. The effort was guided by a double-double of 24 kills and 13 digs from Jess Schaben.

Tickets to the match can be purchased online on cylones.com, for a discounted fee of $2 ($3.93 after fees) or $7 at the Hilton Coliseum Ticket Office Tuesday prior to the match.

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa tight end T.J. Hockenson has been named second-team All-America by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA).

Hockenson (6-foot-5, 250 pounds) is a redshirt sophomore from Chariton, Iowa (Chariton High School). He was previsouly named second-team All-America by the Walter Camp Foundation and The Associated Press. He is Iowa’s Roy Carver Most Valuable Player on offense and earned Academic All-Big Ten honors for a second straight year.

Hockenson received the John Mackey Award as the top tight end in the nation Dec. 5 and was awarded the Ozzie Newsome Award, presented by the Touchdown Club of Columbus, Ohio. Hockenson was named Kwalick-Clark Big Ten Tight End of the Year and earned first-team All-Big Ten honors from Big Ten media and the AP.

Hockenson leads the Hawkeyes with 46 receptions for 717 yards and six receiving touchdowns. He also has one rushing touchdown. Hockenson averages 15.6 yards per catch. His career totals include 70 receptions for 1,037 yards. He is seventh among Iowa tight ends all-time with nine touchdown receptions. Hockenson has surpassed 100 receiving yards twice in 2018, with 125 yards on three receptions versus Wisconsin and four catches for 107 yards at Indiana.

IRVING, Texas – Iowa State freshman guard Tyrese Haliburton was named the Big 12’s Newcomer of the Week, announced today by the league’s office.

It marks the first Big 12 weekly honor of Haliburton’s career.

The native of Oshkosh, Wis., averaged 11.3 points, 8.7 assists, 3.3 rebounds and 2.3 steals as ISU went 2-1 last week. He scored 15 points against Southern and dished out a school-record 17 assists, breaking a 44-year-old ISU record.

The freshman guard had just one turnover against Southern and finished the week with 26 assists and three turnovers. Haliburton shot 60 percent from the field and knocked down 6-of-12 3-point attempts on the week. He has a 5.1 assist-to-turnover ratio this season, which leads the Big 12.

Haliburton and the Cyclones will be back in action on Saturday, taking on Drake in Des Moines at 3:30 p.m. The game will be at Wells Fargo Arena, and is part of the Hy-Vee Classic. It will be televised on MC22.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Rick Fox has resigned after five seasons as football coach at Drake. Fox compiled a 33-22 record with the FCS Bulldogs, including a 7-4 mark this past season, which ended with a 27-24 road loss to then-No. 24 Iowa State. He was 28-12 in Pioneer Football League play.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs owner Clark Hunt says the difference in this year’s team and all those that lost in the playoffs starts with Patrick Mahomes. Much like in their comeback win over Baltimore on Sunday, the Chiefs are seemingly never out of a game with their young QB under center. Mahomes already has the Chiefs in the playoffs. Up next is securing the AFC West title.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A person familiar with the negotiations says the Kansas City Royals and outfielder Billy Hamilton have agreed to a $5.25 million contract for next season that includes up to $1 million in incentives. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Monday because the deal was pending a physical. Hamilton made $4.6 million with the Cincinnati Reds last season, when he was their everyday center fielder. He was not tendered a contract for this season.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas State hired Chris Klieman of North Dakota State to lead its football program Monday night, passing the reins from retired Hall of Fame coach Bill Snyder to someone with three Football Championship Subdivision titles but little Big 12 experience. Klieman was hired to lead the Bison by current Kansas State athletic director Gene Taylor, and was seen as one of the front-runners for the job ever since Snyder announced his retirement.

UNDATED (AP) — Preseason No. 1 Kansas is again the top-ranked team in the AP Top 25 following Gonzaga’s loss to Tennessee. The Jayhawks were the overwhelming top pick among voters despite struggling to get past New Mexico State at home. Duke moved up to No. 2 and Tennessee is No. 3 after beating the Zags in Phoenix.

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Missouri defensive end Tre Williams has been arrested on suspicion of felony second-degree domestic assault. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the 21-year-old sophomore was arrested around 6 a.m. Sunday at his off-campus residence. He was released on $4,500 bond. No details about the alleged crime have been released. The Boone County prosecutor’s office says no charges have been filed, but Missouri has suspended Williams. Missouri plays Oklahoma State in the Liberty Bowl on Dec. 31.
