Nicholas Baer had 11 of his 14 points in the second half for the Hawkeyes, who shot 57.4 percent from the floor and outrebounded the Cyclones 44-24.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Nick McGlynn and Nick Norton combined for 29 points to lead Drake to its fifth straight win, a 75-61 victory over Milwaukee on Thursday night. McGlynn had 15 points and Norton drained 4 of 7 from deep to total 14 points.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The NFL’s highest-scoring offense will face the league’s top-ranked defense when the Kansas City Chiefs welcome the Baltimore Ravens to Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday. The Chiefs are averaging nearly 40 points per game behind their young star quarterback, Patrick Mahomes. The Ravens are allowing fewer than 20 points per game on the other side of the ball.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas coach Bill Self is hopeful injured center Udoka Azubuike will be back on the floor by the time the second-ranked Jayhawks open Big 12 play against Oklahoma on Jan. 2. The 7-footer sustained a severe high ankle sprain against Wofford on Tuesday night. He was still not putting much weight on the ankle Thursday. Kansas plays New Mexico State on Saturday night.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chris Owings has agreed to a $3 million, one-year contract with the Kansas City Royals, five days after the utilityman was cut loose by Arizona. The 27-year-old Owings hit .206 in 106 games this year.

SEATTLE (AP) — Delante Jones and Matej Kavas scored 26 points apiece and Seattle shot 61 percent from the floor in the second half to pull away for a 90-71 victory over Omaha. Jones made 9 of 14 shots from the floor, including 4 of 7 from 3-point range, on his way to a career-high total.

CHICAGO  (December  6, 201 8 )  — In its 34th year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade  Company, today announced  Max Duggan of Lewis Central High School as its  2018 – 19 Gatorade Iowa Football Player of the Year. Duggan is the first Gatorade Iowa Football Player of the Year to be chosen from Lewis Central High School.

The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic  achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes Duggan as Iowa ’s best high school football player. Now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Football Player of the Year award to be announced in December, Duggan joins an elite alumni association of state award – winners in 12 sports, including Emmitt Smith (1 986 – 87, Escambia High School, Fla.), Matthew Stafford (2005 – 06 Highland Park High School , Texas) and Christian McCaffrey (2012 -13, 2013-14, Valor Christian High School, Colo.)

The 6 -foot-2, 195 -pound senior quarterback passed for 2,130 yards and 24 touch downs this past season, leading the Titans (11 – 1) to the Class 3A semifinals. Duggan completed 123 of 186 passes with just three interceptions, also rushing for 1,223 yards and 25 touchdowns on 113 carries. A First Team All – State selection, he was an Elite 11 national finalist and was twice named to the Des Moines Register Iowa Eight.

A member of his school’s student council, Duggan has volunteered locally on behalf of a campus clean – up initiative and a wheelchair athletes program. “Duggan is the toughest, best player and athlete on the field at all times,” said Cory Faust, head coach at Glenwood High. “He’s like an elite running back who plays quarterback. He takes great care of the ball and I’ve never seen him lack composure or class.”

Duggan has maintained a 3.53 GPA in the classroom. He has verbally committed to play football on scholarship at Texas Christian University next fall.

The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states that sanction high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track & field,  and awards one National Player of the Year  in each sport.  From the 12 national winners, one male and one female athlete are each named Gatorade High School Athlete of the Year. In all, 607 athletes are honored each year.

Duggan joins recent Gatorade  Iowa Football Players of the Year Evan Flitz (2017 – 18,  Iowa City West High School ),  Oliver Martin (2016 – 17,  Iowa City West High School ), Noah Clayberg (2015-16, Pella High School ), and Ryan Boyle (2014 -15 &  2013-14, Dowling Catholic High School) among the state’s list of former award winners.

As a part of Gatorade’s cause marketing platform “Play it Forward,” Duggan has the opportunity to award a $1,000 grant to a local or national youth sports organization of his choosing. He is also eligible to submit an essay to win one of twelve $10,000 spotlight grants for the organization of choice, which will be announced throughout the year.

Since the program’s inception in 1985, Gatorade Player of the Year award recipients have won hundreds of  professional and college championships, and many have also turned into pillars in their communities, becoming  coaches, business owners and educators.

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State advanced to the National Invitational Volleyball Championship semifinals with a 3-1 (22-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-20) win over North Texas on Wednesday night at Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones are now 19-13 on the season, while the Mean Green end 2018 at 19-17.

Iowa State will play the winner of the UNLV-Portland match taking place tomorrow night in the Rose City. Site, date and time of the match will be announced following the conclusion of tomorrow night’s quarterfinal round.

ISU was led by senior Hannah Bailey, who in her first career start at middle blocker notched seven kills, five digs, four blocks and two aces. Her fellow senior, Jess Schaben, tied her season-high with 26 kills at .429 hitting and got 11 digs for her 18th double-double of the season.

Player of the Match

Hannah Bailey. Moved to middle blocker for the first time in her career, the senior shined to help lead Iowa State to victory. Bailey got seven kills at .545 hitting, and posted career-highs in blocks (four), digs (five) and aces (two).

Kathleen Doyle scored 22 points in her first game back from a broken hand and Megan Gustafson had 13 with 16 rebounds for Iowa (6-2), which won 10 in a row from 1982-96.

UNDATED (AP) — Iowa’s T.J. Hockenson is the Mackey Award winner as the best tight end in the country. Hockenson is the first sophomore to win the award in its 19-year history and the second player from Iowa, joining Dallas Clark in 2002.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Spencer Ware lost his starting job with the Chiefs after a devastating injury in a preseason game. He got it back after Kareem Hunt’s release. Now, the veteran running back is prepared to start against Baltimore on Sunday having had a full week as the No. 1 in practice, rather than the handful of reps allotted to the backup.

PHOENIX (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals have struck gold in their search for a big hitter, getting All-Star first baseman Paul Goldschmidt from the Arizona Diamondbacks in a multiplayer trade. The Cardinals sent pitcher Luke Weaver, catcher Carson Kelly, minor league infielder Andy Young and a 2019 draft pick to Arizona in the deal.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The NFL’s Rams will pay $24 million to personal seat license holders in St. Louis who filed a class-action lawsuit after the team moved to Los Angeles. The settlement notice was filed in federal court last week but details weren’t released until Wednesday. The class-action lawsuit was filed on behalf of thousands of fans who bought PSLs.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Amir Coffey scored a career-high 32 points, Jordan Murphy had 18 points and 13 rebounds, and Minnesota rallied to beat No. 24 Nebraska 85-78. Isaac Copeland led Nebraska with 17 points and seven rebounds. The Huskers led by as many as 13 in the second half, but the Gophers came back with the support of a raucous home crowd.

Iowa State star Bridget Carleton fought through traffic for a layup that gave Iowa State a 69-68 lead with 49 seconds to go, but Doyle — who missed the first seven games — swung the advantage back to Iowa with free throws 13 second later.

Carleton tied it 70-all on a free throw. But she missed a second one, giving Iowa the ball with the shot clocks turned off. The Hawkeyes drained the seconds down, and Davis used a step-back to find just enough space to drain a 3 from the wing. The Hawkeyes then all converged on Carleton, leaving freshman Ashley Joens — who grew up in Iowa City — wide open for a corner 3. But Joens’ effort went long as the buzzer sounded. Carleton had 21 points and Alexa Middleton scored 20 to lead Iowa State (6-2).

The Hawkeyes needed this one. They followed a close loss to Florida State with a blowout defeat at No. 1 Notre Dame, and three losses before the middle of December would’ve been tough to swallow in a season with such high expectations.

(Radio Iowa) — A program is again underway that takes unwanted deer hides from hunters across the state and uses them to help veterans. Spokesperson Lisa Widick says the hides can be turned in at Elks Lodges across the state for use by the Veterans Leather Program. “The hides are salted and stored here in different places in Iowa, and then they are shipped to a tannery, I believe in the Kansas City area,” Widick says. “And then they are tanned and they are turned into leather pieces.”

Widick says the leather is then used to make kits that are taken to the veterans homes in the state where the veterans turn the leather into usable items. “They make moccasins, they do purses, they do coin purses, they do anything you can make out of leather, the veterans do those things,” Widick explains. “And then they are also…there’s also a company that does manufacturing of wheelchair gloves — so that the veterans who are in wheelchairs use those gloves to keep their hands from getting calluses. And those are really beneficial to our veterans.”

Widick says many of the items the veterans make are sold to raise money. “To go back to help fund different things that the veterans need. So, it’s a wonderful big circle project. The hide comes in, it goes out to make a product that is not going to waste,” Widick says.  Hunters donated some 33-hundred hides to the program last year, and she encourages hunters to donate hides again this year.

“You can go to Elks-dot-org (Elks.org) and there’s a lodge locator. Type in your zip code and it will give you the one nearest you,” Widick says. “You can all that lodge and see if they take hides. If they do — most lodges will arrange pick up from you as well.” Widick says the deer hides are often left behind as most hunters don’t keep them. “There are few that do, but rarely do you see that. They just lay out there where the deer has been skinned and that’s where it stays. And we’d much rather have it come to us so that we can do something good with it,” she says.

Hunters in Iowa take around 100-thousand deer during each hunting season.

ST. LOUIS, Mo., December 5, 2018 – The St. Louis Cardinals announced this afternoon that they have completed a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks, acquiring six-time National League All-Star first baseman Paul Goldschmidt in exchange for catcher Carson Kelly, right-handed pitcher Luke Weaver, minor league infielder Andy Young and the Cardinals Compensation Round B selection in the 2019 Major League Baseball amateur draft.

“We’ve been busy this off-season working to upgrade our lineup, and today we are excited to announce the acquisition of one of the game’s premier players in first baseman Paul Goldschmidt,” stated Cardinals President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak.

Goldschmidt, 31, has been a National League All-Star each of the past six seasons (2013-18), and he is a four-time (2013, 2015, 2017, 2018) N.L. Silver Slugger award winner and three-time (2013, 2015, 2017) Rawlings Gold Glove award recipient.  Goldschmidt is the lone N.L. player to be named an All-Star each of the past six seasons, and he’s one of just three players (Mike Trout and Salvador Pérez) in all of the majors to have done so.

The right-handed hitting Goldschmidt batted .290 in 2018 with 33 home runs and 83 RBI, finishing 6th in National League MVP voting.  The 6-3, 225-pound Delaware native has compiled a career .297 batting mark with 209 HR’s and 710 RBI in 1,092 games and has hit 30 or more homers in four of the last six seasons, including a league-leading 36 in 2013 when he finished 2nd in MVP voting.

“Goldy” owns a career .398 on-base pct. and .532 slugging mark, and since 2013, ranks 2nd among National League leaders in home runs (181), RBI (602), hits (996), runs (599), walks (575), extra base hits (413).  Goldschmidt is the current leader among active MLB first basemen with a .996 fielding percentage and he ranks 5th all-time in MLB history.

The Cardinals are planning to hold a press conference to introduce Goldschmidt on Friday, December 7 in St. Louis, and will have further details once they become available.

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa tight end T.J. Hockenson is the recipient of the 2018 John Mackey Award. The award is presented annually to the top tight end in the nation by the John Mackey Award committee.

The John Mackey Award will be presented Dec. 6, in Atlanta, at the Home Depot College Football Awards Red Carpet Show on ESPNU (5 p.m. CT). That event precedes the College Football Award Show on ESPN (6 p.m. CT).

Under head coach Kirk Ferentz, nine Hawkeye players have earned 10 individual national Player of the Year awards.

Hockenson (6-foot-5, 250 pounds) is a redshirt sophomore from Chariton (Iowa) High School. He is the second Iowa tight end to earn the award, as Dallas Clark was honored in 2002. Tony Moeaki (2009), Allen Reisner (2010), and Noah Fant (2018) have all been semifinalists for the award.

Hockenson is the first sophomore to win the award, and Iowa is one of two schools (Arkansas) to have multiple winners of the award. Hockenson is the fifth Big Ten player to be recognized.

Hockenson was previously named the Kwalick-Clark Big Ten Tight End of the Year. He earned first-team All-Big Ten honors from league media and second-team honors (behind teammate Fant) from Big Ten coaches. Hockenson is also the recipient of the Ozzie Newsome Award, presented by the Touchdown Club of Columbus.

Hockenson leads Iowa with 46 receptions for 717 yards and six receiving touchdowns. He also has one rushing touchdown. Hockenson averages 15.6 yards per catch. His career totals include 70 receptions for 1,037 yards. He is seventh among Iowa tight ends all-time with nine touchdown receptions and he has one career rushing touchdown. Hockenson has surpassed 100 receiving yards twice in 2018, with 125 yards on three receptions versus Wisconsin and four catches for 107 yards at Indiana.
