Cardinals sign Cuban league MVP to minor league contract

Sports

February 25th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals have signed Cuban outfielder Jose Adolis Garcia to a minor league contract and invited him to their big league spring training camp. Garcia, the younger brother of Atlanta Braves third baseman Adonis Garcia, was the MVP of Cuba’s top professional league last year and was declared a free agent by Major League Baseball in December.

Adolis Garcia, who turns 24 next week, led Tigres de Ciego de Avila to consecutive Serie Nacional championships in 2015 and 2016. A right-handed hitter, he batted .315 with a .395 on-base percentage and .517 slugging percentage during his MVP campaign in Cuba. He also played briefly for the Yomiuri Giants in Japan last season.

St. Louis announced the move Friday night, saying general manager John Mozeliak would be available to discuss it with reporters Saturday morning at the club’s spring training complex.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Seanna Johnson scored 22 points, including 10 straight for Iowa State in the third quarter, and the Cyclones upset No. 6 Texas 70-66 Friday night for their fourth straight victory.

Down two with seven minutes remaining, Iowa State (17-11, 8-9 Big 12) took control with a 9-0 run. Bridget Carleton scored points 18 for Iowa State, but she committed two turnovers in the final minute to give Texas an opportunity. The Longhorns (21-7, 14-3) had a chance to tie it after the second turnover, but Carlton blocked Ariel Atkins’ driving shot with nine seconds left and then made two free throws.

Jadda Buckley added 14 points for Iowa State. Texas has lost three straight games for the first time this season. Brooke McCarty led the Longhorns with 12 points, Brianna Taylor added 11, and Joyner Holmes and Alecia Sutton had 10 apiece.

Chiefs sign veteran running back Spiller to provide depth

Sports

February 24th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Chiefs have signed veteran running back C.J. Spiller, providing depth behind Spencer Ware in a move that could mean Jamaal Charles will be cut in a cost-saving move. The Chiefs would owe Charles more than $6 million this season, a big price tag for a running back who missed most of last year to knee surgery. They would not incur a salary cap hit by letting him go and it is possible Charles could re-sign for less money.

Kansas City is trying to free cap space to help bring back defensive tackle Dontari Poe and safety Eric Berry, whose agent, Chad Speck, also represents Spiller. Spiller only carried six times in stints with the Jets and Seahawks last season. The former first-round pick signed a four-year, $16 million deal with the Saints in 2015 but only played in 13 games before he was released.

No. 21 Drake women can close out MVC title tonight (Fri. night)

Sports

February 24th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

The 21st ranked Drake women’s basketball team is closing in on its first Missouri Valley Conference regular season title since 2000 and can clinch it tonight (Friday night), with a victory at home over Northern Iowa. Drake coach Jennie Baranczyk says  the Bulldogs have gotten to 15-0 in conference play by staying focused on daily improvement and that won’t change.

UNI will be a tough hurdle to clear. The Panthers took the Bulldogs to double overtime in their first meeting and have been the Valley’s best road team the past few years. The Bulldogs have been rolling since the win in Cedar Falls and the average margin of victory in their last six games is just under 34 points.

Tip-time at the Knapp Center is 7-p.m.
