February 22nd, 2017 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Senior Peter Jok scored 35 points as Iowa rallied from 13 down to beat Indiana 96-90 in overtime on Tuesday night, snapping a three-game losing streak. Jok made a program record 22 free throws for the Hawkeyes (15-13, 7-8 Big Ten), which made 39 free throws to Indiana’s 16.

Jok hit a pair of free throws and two more off a subsequent steal, putting Iowa ahead 84-81 with 2:14 left in OT. The Hawkeyes then forced another turnover, and Jok made it six straight free throws and an 86-81 Hawkeyes lead.

Tyler Cook’s dunk with 59 seconds left sealed it for Iowa, which came back from a 17-4 deficit to start play. Iowa took its first lead, 73-71, on a Cook 3-point play with 2:10 left in regulation, but Josh Newkirk’s free throws with 25.6 seconds to go brought the Hoosiers even at 75-all. Cook missed a jumper at the buzzer to push the game into overtime.

Robert Johnson scored 19 points with seven assists and Thomas Bryant finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds for Indiana (15-13, 5-10), which committed 22 turnovers in losing its fifth straight.

Iowa State hires Virginia Tech’s Dresser as wrestling coach

Sports

February 21st, 2017 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Kevin Dresser, who built Virginia Tech into an Atlantic Coast Conference wrestling power, was hired Monday as Iowa State’s wrestling coach. He grew up in Humboldt, Iowa, and wrestled for the rival Hawkeyes. He succeeds Kevin Jackson, who is stepping down following the end of his eighth season.

Dresser agreed to a seven-year deal worth $2.25 million plus incentives, Iowa State said. Virginia Tech said Tony Robie, in his 11th season as associate head coach at the school, will serve as interim head coach for the rest of the season.

Dresser was the 2016 National Wrestling Coaches’ Association Coach of the Year. He became the Hokies’ wrestling coach 11 years ago. The Hokies went 48-5 in dual meets the past three seasons and placed in the top 10 at the NCAA meet each of the past four years.

Spartans head back to state with big second half against Akron-Westfield

Podcasts, Sports

February 20th, 2017 by admin

The Exira-EHK Spartans girls basketball team is headed to the Class 1A State Tournament for the third straight year, but it took a big second half effort to get there. The Spartans outscored Akron-Westfield 32-13 in the second half to win by a final of 52-46 in Mapleton on Monday night. The Spartans trailed 33-20 after a sloppy first half but flipped the tables in the second half and held the Westerners scoreless in the third quarter.  Exira-EHK Head Coach Tom Petersen was proud of their second half effort.

The Spartans didn’t take care of the basketball in the first half well and also were dominated on the glass with the Westerners getting multiple second and third chance possessions. Coach Petersen said his team wasn’t rotating and playing defense well early in the game.

Spartan Junior Sophia Peppers led the second half charge with 17 of her game-high 21 points coming after the break.  Peppers said Coach Petersen was very motivational in the halftime locker room.

Peppers also talked about the defensive adjustments that helped spark the turnaround.

The Spartans will make their third straight trip to the state tournament after making the semifinals two seasons ago and falling in the first round last year.  Peppers said the team is motivated to have success at state this year.

Akron-Westfield was led in the loss by Bailey Davis with 11 points and their season ends with a 19-5 record.  The Spartans improve to 23-1 and will face the 23-1 Sidney Cowgirls in the first round of the 1A State Tournament on Monday, February 27th at 3:15pm.  We’ll have coverage of the game on KJAN from Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
