Audubon hits stride in second half against East Mills

Podcasts, Sports

August 24th, 2019 by admin

The Audubon Wheelers took full control early in the second half against East Mills and pulled away for a 61-26 victory in their opening game of the 2019 high school football season.

The two teams traded scores through the first half of play. A big turning point came late in the first half as East Mills was driving down by 5 at 25-20, but suffered back to back penalties to back them up. The Wolverines ended up turning the ball over on downs and the Wheelers took over on their own 8 yard line. Audubon then went 72 yards in 9 plays capped by a 3 yard touchdown run by Skyler Schultes with 20 seconds left in the half.  That gave the Wheelers a 31-20 lead at halftime.

Ethan Klocke had 3 touchdowns receiving and 1 rushing for the Wheelers

The second half became all Wheelers. Audubon forced a three and out for the Wolverines to open the half. Then the Wheelers scored on their first two possessions of the half to put the game out of reach.

Sklyer Schultes ran for 275 yards and 4 touchdowns for the Wheelers, three of those scores in the second half. Gavin Smith went 4-4 passing for 98 yards and two scores and ran for another. Ethan Klocke had a big game as well with six cathes for 139 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for 40 yards and one more score.

Audubon will travel to face Remsen, St. Mary’s next week. East Mills heads back home to Malvern to host East Union.

Fowler’s homer caps comeback, Cardinals beat Rockies 6-5

Sports

August 23rd, 2019 by admin

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Yadier Molina knew Dexter Fowler would come up big, even before Fowler did.

Marcell Ozuna, Paul DeJong and Fowler each hit two-run homers, and the St. Louis Cardinals came back to beat the Colorado Rockies 6-5 on Thursday night.

Fowler’s 15th home run of the season, off of a 97 mph fastball from Yency Almonte (0-1) in the seventh, capped the rally. Molina had his hands in the air as the pitch left Almonte’s hand.

“I got a good feeling the way he was the previous at-bat,” Molina said. “He was taking good swings, and I knew it for some reason.”

Fowler made solid contact his previous two at-bats, sending a pair of drives to the center field wall that were caught. After the second fly out, Paul Goldschmidt gave some advice to his teammate.

“Goldy said, ‘Hey, try to pull the ball,’ so that’s what I did,” Fowler said.

Matt Carpenter set it up by working a walk in an eight-pitch, pinch-hitting appearance to lead off the frame.

“He came off the bench with the right kind of mindset, took a really, really good, tough, quality at-bat, worked a deep count and then made the guy make pitches and worked a walk and brought the go-ahead run to the plate which we were rewarded for,” manager Mike Shildt said.

Fowler leads the Cardinals with 15 RBIs in August. He is batting .320 (8 for 25) in his last seven games with two homers and 12 RBI.

“The situation’s there,” Fowler said of his recent surge, which has coincided with his being moved to the leadoff spot. “The guys have been getting on base and I’ve just been in the right situation at the right times.”

Dominic Leone (1-0), who was recalled from Triple-A Memphis before the game, got the win. Giovanny Gallegos and Andrew Miller pitched a scoreless eighth and Carlos Martínez picked up his 15th save in 18 opportunities.

It was the third straight start in which Cardinals starter Miles Mikolas gave up five earned runs. The Rockies put runners on the bases in five of his six innings, but St. Louis managed to win for the fourth time in its last five games.

UP NEXT

The Rockies will send RHP Peter Lambert (2-3, 6.55 ERA) to the mound in the second game of the four-game series against the Cardinals and RHP Jack Flaherty (7-6, 3.46 ERA). Lambert will be making his first-ever start against St. Louis. Flaherty has won his last three starts and has only allowed one run in his last 28 innings.

Open casting call Saturday in Des Moines for movie chronicling last season of six-on-six girls basketball

News, Sports

August 23rd, 2019 by admin

NEW PROVIDENCE, Iowa – An upcoming movie about Iowa’s six-on-six girls basketball could be the big break for anyone hoping to break into show business, particularly high school female basketball players, parents and fans of the game.

Open casting calls are set for this Saturday in Des Moines and next Saturday in Iowa Falls, with producers emphasizing that acting experience and preparation are not needed. The first casting call will be held Saturday at the Des Moines Playhouse lower level, 831 42nd St., from 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. The second casting call will be Saturday, Aug. 31 at the Iowa Falls Chamber of Commerce, 520 Rockslyvania Ave, Iowa Falls from 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m.

The movie, “New Providence,” will depict the final season of Iowa’s six-on-six basketball. It’s the story of Jimmy Voss, an often-controversial New York sportswriter sent to a small town in Iowa to cover the final season of the state’s iconic six-on-six high school girls basketball in 1993. What he encounters is a passion for the sport by the coach and team and an undying love for the small town. When he allows himself to enter into their world, Voss discovers that being sent to New Providence, Iowa may have been the best day of his life.

The screenplay’s author, Jack Smith, moved to New Providence himself in 1993 to run a business and quickly became a student of the unique game. Fearless Cinema, LLC is developing the script and producing the film.

“Being a basketball and history junkie, I soon learned that in Iowa, girls six-on-six basketball was what high school football is to Texas and boy’s high school basketball is to Indiana,” said Smith, who interviewed players, coaches and fans, poured over articles about the sport and watched hours of game video as he wrote his work. “Six-on-six basketball was very special and a small town’s status and spirit was often based on how far its girls’ team advanced in the state tournament.”

Audubon hosts East Mills in Week 0 gridiron tilt on KJAN

Sports

August 22nd, 2019 by admin

The Audubon Wheelers open up their 2019 football season Friday night with a Week 0 match-up against the East Mills Wolverines. The game came about shortly before both teams were set to open up camp. East Mills had already lost a game off their schedule with Stanton and Essex sharing a program for this season. Then Clarinda Academy announced they would not be fielding a team for the season just a few weeks ago. East Mills Head Coach Kevin Schafer said they were then scrambling to find another game to add. The Wolverines were turned down by a couple of schools they reached out to, then had a possibility with a school on the Eastern side of the state but decided that commute was too much. Then Audubon stepped up and agreed to the early season game.

The game will feature two teams that narrowly missed the playoffs last year. The Wolverines went 7-2 with losses to district opponents Stanton and Fremont-Mills. Audubon went 6-3 with losses to Fremont-Mills, Exira-EHK, and CAM.

The Wolverines return star quarterback Michael Schafer and a few other nice pieces. Schafer threw for 2,003 yards and 28 touchdowns with 10 interceptions last year. Audubon Head Coach Sean Birks said the Wheelers will need to wreak some havoc up front and make Schafer uncomfortable.

The Wheelers will counter with a quarterback coming off a nice season as well, Skyler Schultes. He racked up 954 yards passing with 14 touchdowns and 5 interceptions and added 1,136 yards rushing with 26 more scores. Wolverines Head Coach Kevin Schafer knows the Wolverines will need to try to slow that run game down.

Coach Birks said the Wheelers hope to work the power run game again this season but also hope to take some of the load off of Schultes.

The Wheelers and Wolverines will tee it up at Chiz Jones Field at 7:00pm on Friday night. We’ll start our coverage with the Dvorak Tire and Service Pregame Show at 6:30pm. Chris Parks and Mike Smith will have the call on the air, online, and on the web app. You can also catch live video on KJAN TV. Go to kjan.com then click KJAN Video Network under the Community Hub. ST. LOUIS, Mo., August 22, 2019 – Today the St. Louis Cardinals, in conjunction with Cardinals Care, the City of Pagedale and Beyond Housing, announced the dedication of Matt Carpenter Field at the Pagedale Family Resource Center in Pagedale, Missouri.

Cardinals Team President Bill DeWitt III, was joined at the dedication by Cardinals Infielder, Matt Carpenter, Cardinals Vice President of Community Relations & Executive Director of Cardinals Care, Michael Hall; Cardinals Care Director & Youth Baseball Commissioner, Keith Brooks; Mayor of Pagedale, Mary Carter, and Beyond Housing Chief Operating Officer, Deb Dombar.

The professionally designed field is the result of a six-figure investment by Cardinals Care that includes a graded and irrigated playing field, two paved and covered dugouts, bleachers, fencing, and a state-of-the art solar powered scoreboard.  The field will play an integral role in teaching Redbird Rookies participants the values of teamwork, integrity, self-esteem, and leadership.

Matt Carpenter Field is the 24th field dedicated by Cardinals Care since its inception in 1997.  Most recently, the Cardinals dedicated Dexter Fowler Field in August, 2017, at Hess Park in Decatur, Ill.  Carpenter and his wife, Mackenzie, have been long time supporters of Cardinals Care and the St. Louis community.

This season marks the 16th year of Cardinals Care’s innovative Redbird Rookies program, a free baseball league for kids who otherwise might not have the opportunity to play.  In addition to providing all the uniforms, gloves, bats, balls and other equipment needed for each team, Redbird Rookies also provides extensive off-field support in the areas of health, education, mentoring and the cultural arts for each of the nearly 2,500 kids who participate in the program each year
