Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa’s Nate Stanley will enter his senior season with a chance at becoming one of the greatest quarterbacks in school history. Stanley is content to focus on winning and letting his legacy take care of itself. Stanley threw for 52 touchdowns in his first two seasons as a starter, the best two-year stretch for a Hawkeye. He is just 23 TD passes away from passing Heisman Trophy runner-up Chuck Long for the top spot. Iowa opens the season Saturday against Miami (Ohio).

AMES, Iowa (AP) — No. 21 Iowa State heads into the season with an offensive line it considers a strength. That has not always been the case for coach Matt Campbell, who is now in this third season. The five players who will start on Saturday against Northern Iowa have combined to start 114 games at Iowa State. Only four Bowl Subdivision teams have a unit with more combined starts. Campbell says he expects the four seniors and a sophomore to play like a veteran group.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Yadier Molina hit two home runs and the NL Central-leading St. Louis Cardinals matched a season high with their sixth straight win, beating the Milwaukee Brewers 6-3 on a rain-delayed game inside Miller Park. Play was halted in the seventh inning as rain poured through the open roof and fans rushed to the covered concourses. The delay lasted about nine minutes as the retractable roof closed. Cardinals right fielder Dexter Fowler made a jumping catch at the wall with two on to end it.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Two people familiar with the situation tell The Associated Press that the ownership of the Kansas City Royals is open to the possibility of selling the franchise if the right buyer is found. The people spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the sale. The Athletic reported Tuesday that team owner David Glass was in discussions with a group led by Kansas City native and Cleveland Indians vice chairman John Sherman.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Marcus Semien provided just enough early offense and Mike Fiers and three Oakland relievers combined to shut down the Kansas City Royals in a 2-1 victory. Semien had hits in his first two at-bats of the game, coming around to score in the first inning and driving in a run in the second. Fiers scattered eight hits in his 5 1/3 innings and has won 11 straight decisions, dating to May 7, to tie Mark Mulder for the second-longest winning streak in Oakland history.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The final preseason game is where the final spots on the roster are typically won and lost. That’s no different for the Kansas City Chiefs, where everything from the backup running back to wide receiver to defensive backfield positions will be settled.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A former defensive tackle for the Kansas City Chiefs, Dallas Cowboys and Seattle Seahawks has been charged with illegally possessing firearms. The U.S. attorney’s office said Monday in announcing the charges against 40-year-old Saousoalii Siavii Jr. that he was twice stunned with a Taser after he resisted arrest when he was taken into custody in August.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Kansas State coach Chris Klieman inherited a roster without a single scholarship running back when he took over the program. But the arrival of three touted transfers, including former Ball State running back James Gilbert, has Klieman feeling optimistic. The season opener is Saturday against Nicholls State.

UNDATED (AP) _ The St. Louis Cardinals continue to lead the NL Central by three games over Chicago after Yadier Molina homered twice in a 6-3 victory at Milwaukee. Miles Mikolas was reached for one run and only four hits while striking out 10 over six innings to help the Redbirds get their sixth straight win. The Cubs bounced back from their three-game sweep by Washington as Yu Darvish scattered five hits over eight innings of a 5-2 victory against the New York Mets.

Secretary Pate partners with Iowa Cubs to promote Iowa Caucuses, voter registration

Sports

August 27th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES – Secretary of State Paul Pate is partnering with the Iowa Cubs to promote our state’s unique first-in-the-nation caucus status and help Cubs fans register to vote. The Iowa Cubs will temporarily change their team name to the Iowa Caucuses for this Friday’s game against the Memphis Redbirds.

Secretary Pate’s staff will be on hand at the game to help attendees register to vote or update their registration. He also invited the Republican Party of Iowa and Iowa Democratic Party to attend and inform Iowans about the caucus process. Although approximately 90 percent of Iowans are registered to vote, Pate says it is important to keep your registration up-to-date with your current address. Friday’s game, he says, is an ideal opportunity to check your status.

The Secretary of State will have voter registration forms and online tablets available at the entrance gates for Friday’s game. Additionally, they will be giving away free Women’s Suffrage Centennial Celebration bookmarks and Iowa League of Heroes #BeAVoter trading cards. For more information on Friday’s game, visit IowaCubs.com.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Marcell Ozuna’s bases-loaded double keyed a six-run second inning and surging St. Louis pounded out a 12-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers. The Cardinals, who have won five straight, jumped on starter Gio Gonzalez (2-2) for eight runs in the first two innings en route to their 14th victory in 17 games.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs lost backup quarterback Chad Henne to a fractured ankle in their penultimate preseason game, and they signed veteran Matt Moore to provide some depth behind starter Patrick Mahomes. Henne will have surgery on the ankle he broke during Saturday night’s game against San Francisco. The Chiefs have two other quarterbacks on their roster in Chase Litton and Kyle Shurmur, but neither has distinguished himself in the preseason.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Adrian Martinez has accomplished a lot in one year as Nebraska’s starting quarterback. He says he has a lot to do before he is satisfied. Martinez put up the best numbers of any freshman QB in the country last year. The Cornhuskers won only four games. This year, Nebraska is projected to be much improved. The Huskers open at home Saturday against South Alabama.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Marcus Semien homered, tripled and drove in a career-high seven runs as the Oakland Athletics set season highs for runs and hits in a 19-4 thrashing of the Kansas City Royals. Jurickson Profar, Matt Chapman and Khris Davis also went deep for the A’s, who are locked in a tight race with Cleveland and Tampa Bay for the two American League wild cards.

Ozuna helps power Cards past Brewers 12-2

Sports

MILWAUKEE (AP) — In less than three weeks, the surging St. Louis Cardinals have climbed to the top of the division — and then some. Marcell Ozuna’s bases-loaded double keyed a six-run second inning and St. Louis pounded out a 12-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday night.

The Cardinals, who have won five straight, jumped on starter Gio Gonzalez (2-2) for eight runs in the first two innings en route to their 14th victory in 17 games.
Yadier Molina and Paul DeJong each homered and drove in three runs for St. Louis, which moved to a season-high 14 games above .500. The Cardinals extended their lead in the N.L. Central to three games over idle Chicago. The third-place Brewers dropped 5½ back.
UP NEXT
Cardinals: RHP Miles Mikolas (7-13, 4.43 ERA) is 0-3 in his last five starts. He has allowed 15 earned runs in 22 innings in his last three outings.
Brewers: RHP Adrian Houser (6-5, 3.62 ERA) is 2-5 with a 4.91 ERA in 11 starts, and 4-0 with a 1.47 ERA in 17 relief appearances. He won his last start, allowing one earned run in 5 1-3 innings in a 5-3 victory over the Cardinals.

Atlantic football hopes to leave positive legacy before changes at the Trojan Bowl

Sports

August 26th, 2019 by admin

Trojan LogoThe Atlantic Trojans football team has had a strong summer and camp in preparation for the 2019 season. The Trojans are coming off a 4-5 season a year ago in their first year in Class 2A. Trojan Head Coach Mike McDermott has liked the work his team has put in during the off-season.

The Trojans will have to replace a dynamic senior class that was led by quarterback Chase Mullenix. Mullenix threw for 1119 yards and 6 touchdowns last season with 12 interceptions, he also ran for 848 yards and 11 more scores. Coach McDermott said Chase and the other seniors will be tough to replace but he hopes that other players step up in multiple positions.

Coach McDermott said the seniors have led well early in the season and one thing they have talked about was wanting to leave a positive legacy before changes are made to the Trojan Bowl following this season.

Atlantic will open the season at the Trojan Bowl this Friday night against Saydel. Kickoff for the game is set for 7:00pm. You can hear the full preseason interview with Coach McDermott below and you can hear from him before the Saydel game on Friday at 4:45pm on “Trojan Preview” on KJAN.

Iowa’s 2019-20 men’s basketball schedule released

Sports

August 26th, 2019 by admin

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa, in conjunction with the Big Ten Conference, announced on Friday its 2019-20 men’s basketball schedule. The schedule includes 16 regular season home games, including nine weekend games on Mediacom Court at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Game times, along with television and streaming information for each game, will be released in September.

Fran McCaffery has put together one of Iowa’s most challenging schedules entering his 10th season as head coach of the Hawkeyes. Iowa will play 14 regular season games against teams ranked in the Top 50 of the NCAA’s NET Rankings from a year ago.

“I am continuously amazed by the support that we receive from our fans at home and on the road,” said McCaffery. “Our home crowds were phenomenal last year, which was evident in our ability to win games and ultimately advance in the NCAA Tournament. We need that similar support this year. It will be a fun team to watch.”

The Hawkeyes will tipoff the 2019-20 season on Friday, Nov. 8, against SIU-Edwardsville in Iowa City. That contest will be the first of five consecutive home dates to begin the season. Iowa will also challenge DePaul as part of the Gavitt Games (Nov. 11), Oral Roberts (Nov. 15), North Florida (Nov. 21) and Cal Poly (Nov. 24).

Iowa will face the NCAA runner-up a season ago, Texas Tech, in the first round of the Las Vegas Invitational on Thanksgiving (Nov. 28). Depending on the first round results, Iowa will take on either Creighton or San Diego State the next day on Nov. 29 in the consolation or championship game. Tickets are available for purchase at the Orleans Arena box office or online at orleansarena.com. Last November, Iowa beat Oregon and Connecticut to win the 2K Empire Classic in New York City.

Iowa will potentially play seven straight games against teams who finished in the Top 100 of the NCAA’s NET Rankings between Nov. 28 and Dec. 21. After returning from Las Vegas, Iowa will travel East to compete against Syracuse in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge on Dec. 3. Iowa’s first two league games will come against Michigan in Ann Arbor on Dec. 6, and home versus Minnesota on Dec. 9. The Hawkeyes conclude their nonconference slate at Iowa State in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series (Dec. 12), a neutral site game in Chicago versus Cincinnati (Dec. 21) in the Chicago Legends, and home against Kennesaw State (Dec. 29).

The Hawkeyes will play their fourth neutral site game on Saturday, Jan. 4, when Big Ten play resumes after the New Year, with a contest against Penn State at the historic Palestra in Philadelphia. The Palestra has hosted more basketball games than any other facility in college basketball. McCaffery, a Philadelphia native, was a three-year lettermen at Penn and played inside the Palestra from 1980-82. This will mark Iowa’s first appearance in the Palestra since competing in the Quaker City Tournament in December, 1961. This will be the second time in four seasons that Penn State will host a Big Ten opponent in Philadelphia (Michigan State in 2017).

“We’re excited to go there and play in that facility in front of a packed house,” McCaffery said. “This will be a great opportunity in a great atmosphere. I grew up going to the Palestra every weekend with my parents and brother, and then had the opportunity to practice and play there pretty much every day when I went to school there. I’m excited about the opportunity.”

Iowa will have Big Ten home contests against Maryland (Jan. 10), Michigan (Jan. 17), Rutgers (Jan. 22), Wisconsin (Jan. 27), Illinois (Feb. 2), Nebraska (Feb. 8), Ohio State (Feb. 20), Penn State (Feb. 29), and Purdue (March 3). Games against Michigan, Rutgers, and Wisconsin will be three straight home games over a 10-day stretch.

The Hawkeyes will play road games at Nebraska (Jan. 7), Northwestern (Jan. 14), Maryland (Jan. 30), Purdue (Feb. 5), Indiana (Feb. 13), Minnesota (Feb. 16), Michigan State (Feb. 25), and Illinois (March 8).

The Big Ten Conference Tournament (March 11-15) will take place at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
