Drake basketball player charged after off-campus shooting

News, Sports

September 12th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A Drake men’s basketball player has been charged with an off-campus shooting that he says was accidental. Des Moines police say Tremell Murphy was charged Thursday with discharging a firearm inside city limits and making false reports to law enforcement.

A university spokesman says Murphy has been removed from basketball activities. Murphy was a starting forward for the Bulldogs as a junior last year.

Police say the shooting occurred the night of Aug. 31 during a party at a home near campus. Officers found a 19-year-old man bleeding from his head and noticed a bullet hole in a nearby wall, leading them to believe the shot had come from Murphy’s adjacent room. Police say Murphy first insisted the man had fallen but later acknowledged he’d accidentally fired the .22-caliber bullet.

Game day traffic on I-35 to experience a new way to exit into Ames

AMES, Iowa – Sept. 12, 2019 – The flyover bridge taking northbound traffic from Interstate 35 to westbound U.S. 30 opened this week, just in time for the big Iowa State/Iowa football game on Saturday. The exit for the new flyover bridge from northbound I-35 to westbound U.S. 30 has moved almost a mile south of the old cloverleaf exit and is combined with the eastbound U.S. 30 exit to Nevada. The old cloverleaf loop from northbound I-35 to westbound U.S. 30 is permanently closed. The change was made to improve safety in this area as 45 percent of the crashes recorded here were associated with the I-35 northbound to U.S. 30 westbound ramp.

If you miss the new flyover bridge exit at 111B, you can easily find your way to the game day festivities by taking the next exit onto 13th Street in Ames and following the green signs to Jack Trice Stadium.

Motorists exiting from the new flyover bridge should use caution as they will be merging onto U.S. 30 with traffic heading west on from southbound I-35 and westbound from Nevada. (see map).

Fans traveling southbound on I-35 and non-game day travelers coming to Ames are encouraged to take Exit 113 to 13th Street.

While football fans will be focused on the rivalry between two of the state’s major universities, the new bridge celebrates an earlier achievement for one of the universities, the development of the modern computer. Named the “John V. Atanasoff and Clifford Berry Memorial Bridge,” the structure recognizes the inventors of the modern computer which occurred at Iowa State University.

You have to register at casino before betting at your local watering hole

(Radio Iowa) — Buffalo Wild Wings last week announced a deal with M-G-M Resorts to bring M-G-M sports betting into their restaurants in states where sports betting is legal. But Iowa gambling regulators says you won’t be able to go into the restaurants here and sign up for sports gambling accounts. Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission administrator Brian Ohorilko says the only way to sit down to eat wings and gamble is to first sign up for a mobile sports betting app at one of the state’s licensed casinos.

“Iowa law strictly limits sports wagering to casinos that have a gaming license, and so wagering inside a retail setting would be limited to those facilities. Wagering is also permitted under Iowa law through mobile wagering devices, and so folks could access their phone or other mobile device from anywhere within the boundaries of the state of Iowa,” Ohorilko says, “but with respect to any other entity offering sports wagering, that could not occur under the current laws of Iowa.”

Ohorilko says right now there are only two companies licensed in the state of Iowa allowed to offer advanced deposit sports wagering through mobile apps. You have to go to one of the seven casinos they serve to sign up.  “At any of those seven locations if a customer were to sign up, get the application that they need, and the account through any of the two licensed companies, than those customers could wager on their device from a Buffalo Wild Wings or from any other restaurant or location,” according to Ohorilko.

Sunday will mark one month since sports gambling was legalized in the state of Iowa.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

UNDATED (AP) — The 67th game between Iowa State and No. 19 Iowa is still highly anticipated even though it fell short of being the first with both teams ranked. Iowa State slipped to the first spot out of this week’s Top 25. The Cy-Hawk showdown is among seven Big 12 games this week against other Power Five teams. Iowa State is coming off an open date. The Cyclones have won seven home games in a row since the start of last season to match a school record.

UNDATED (AP) — Pittsburgh and Penn State will meet for the 100th time in the Keystone State Clash. Pitt hasn’t won in Happy Valley since 1988. The Nittany Lions are going for their third win in a row in the rivalry. Iowa will be trying for its fifth straight win over Iowa State in the Cy-Hawk Series. Northern Illinois could pose problems for Nebraska. Purdue has questions at quarterback entering its home game against TCU.

DENVER (AP) — Antonio Senzatela pitched six strong innings for his first win in two months, Ian Desmond hit a go-ahead home run and the Colorado Rockies beat the St. Louis Cardinals 2-1. It was the second straight 2-1 victory for the Rockies, who ensured their first series win over the Cardinals since taking two of three from St. Louis May 26-28, 2017.

CHICAGO (AP) — Jorge Soler hit a pair of two-run homers among his career high-matching four hits, leading the Kansas City Royals to an 8-6 victory over the Chicago White Sox. Adalberto Mondesi homered and had three hits, and Bubba Starling and Ryan O’Hearn also connected as the Royals beat Chicago for the fifth time in six games.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Sammy Watkins hauled in nine passes for 198 yards and three touchdowns, pacing the Chiefs to a 40-26 rout of the Jaguars in last week’s opener. Now, the former No. 4 overall draft pick will be counted on to pick up the slack following the loss of fellow wide receiver Tyreek Hill to a collarbone injury. Watkins had predicted a breakout season after having a productive, healthy offseason.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

DENVER (AP) — Nolan Arenado hit a 482-foot two-run homer that bounced out of Coors Field in the first inning, Chi Chi González got his first big league win in four years and the Colorado Rockies slowed the St. Louis Cardinals’ playoff push with a 2-1 victory. St. Louis had won 23 of 30 coming in to open a four-game lead in the NL Central over the second-place Chicago Cubs.

CHICAGO (AP) — Rookie Eloy Jiménez hit his first career grand slam, Yoán Moncada launched a monster two-run homer and the Chicago White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 7-3. Adam Engel added a solo shot for as the White Sox won their second straight, but just their fourth in 14 games. Adalberto Mondesi, Alex Gordon and Ryan O’Hearn went deep for the Royals on a warm night where the ball carried well and every run was scored on a homer.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa’s passing game last season was all about the tight ends. Which made sense, since T.J. Hockenson and Noah Fant would go on to be first-round selections in the NFL draft. It’s different this season for the No. 19 Hawkeyes, who play Saturday at Iowa State. Eleven players have receptions so far this season and all six touchdown passes have gone to wide receivers.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State entered this season with more hype than ever before and then almost lost to Northern Iowa in the opener. The Cyclones know they will need to be much better to knock off No. 19 Iowa on Saturday. Hamstrung by a lack of explosive plays, bad penalties and somewhat inconsistent line play, Iowa State only scored 13 regulation points against Northern Iowa. Coach Matt Campbell says his team needs to force the flow of the game.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs have returned De’Anthony Thomas to the active roster and waived fellow wide receiver Byron Pringle with the hope that they can sign him to the practice squad should he clear waivers.
