ATLANTA (AP) — Mike Foltynewicz threw seven dominating innings before pinch-hitter Adam Duvall hit a two-run homer that carried the Atlanta Braves to a 3-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. Foltynewicz, who spent a good chunk of his summer in Triple-A after a miserable start, has been a different pitcher since returning from the minors. The best-of-five series is now tied at one game apiece as it shifts to St. Louis for the next two games.

ATLANTA (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals rookie Ryan Helsley was insulted by his first exposure to the Tomahawk Chop chant by Atlanta Braves fans. Helsley, a member of the Cherokee nation, told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch the chant is a “misrepresentation of the Cherokee people or Native Americans in general.”

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska will again try to bounce back from a humiliating loss. The Cornhuskers will enter their game against Northwestern off a 41-point beat-down at home by Ohio State. Second-year coach Scott Frost says the Nebraska job is not harder than he thought it would be and good things are coming. Northwestern enters the game with one of the nation’s worst offenses and will be without its leading receiver.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Each year Kansas’ basketball season kick-off, dubbed Late Night in the Phog, promises a festive night filled with musical performances, skits and scrimmages, building excitement to match the lofty expectations for the upcoming season. However, this year anticipation eagerly surrounded not only an appearance by Snoop Dogg, but also whether Kansas’ recent notice of allegations from the NCAA would dampen the mood.

CHICAGO (AP) — DePaul says former Kansas guard Charlie Moore will be eligible to play immediately after the NCAA granted a waiver. The Chicago product transferred in April, making DePaul his third school. He began his career at California and played one season at Kansas. Moore averaged 2.9 points in 35 games as a sophomore after sitting out the Jayhawks’ 2017-18 Final Four season. He scored 12.2 points per game as a freshman at California in 2016-17.

The Atlantic Trojans got off to a quick start but couldn’t sustain any momentum in a 28-7 loss at OA-BCIG Friday night.

The Trojans opened up the game getting the ball in Falcon territory when OA-BCIG fumbled the opening kickoff. The Trojans were able to take advantage and scored on an 11-yard Tyler Moen touchdown run.

The Trojans held that lead for a few possessions before Falcons quarterback Cooper DeJean got OA-BCIG on the board with a touchdown run with 3 minutes left in the half. They then use their timeouts to save clock and forced an Atlantic punt with a little over a minute left in the half. DeJean then scored on a wild back and forth run from 51-yards out with just :25 left in the half.

The momentum from that big play carried over into the second half. The Falcons went on drives of 84 and 89 yards on their first two possessions of the half. The first ended in a touchdown pass from DeJean to Jake Nieman, the second with DeJean’s third touchdown run of the game. That pushed the Falcon lead to 28-7 and would prove to be the final margin.

DeJean finished the game 20-28 passing for 259 yards and 1 score. He ran for 164 yards and three touchdowns. The Falcons outgained the Trojans 437-293. The Falcons move to 6-0 on the season and 2-0 in 2A District 9. The Falcons travel to Shenandoah next week.

Atlantic was led by Tyler Moen with 186 yard and 1 touchdown. The Trojans fall to 2-4 on the season and 1-1 in the district. Next up for the Trojans is a homecoming meeting with Greene County.

(Radio Iowa) — The duck season is set to open this weekend and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources reports that access to several of their popular public wildlife management areas have been cut off by floodwater. D-N-R wildlife biologist Matt Dollison says parts of the Riverton area’s Jensen Tract south of County Road J-46 are blocked due to flooding. “The boat ramp there, and the walk-in parking lot that’s very popular — both of those have been cut off by floodwater,” Dollison says “The road is closed there due to water coming in through a previous levee blowout on the south end of that area. So, that’s kind of a new one.” Many other areas are also blocked by Missouri River flood water.

“Including the M.U. Payne Wildlife Management Area, the Auldon Bar Wildlife Management Area, Copeland Bend and Forney Lake and Noddleman Island,” he says. “Several of the roads that go to those are currently still underwater also. I guess people just need to be aware as they head out for the duck opener this Saturday there could be limited access. They might want to get out maybe beforehand and ensure they can get where they want to go.” Dollison anticipates a slight reduction in the number of hunters coming into the area. “The main area at Riverton north of the highway is our most popular area,” Dollison says, “and it’s currently still accessible–both by boats at the boat ramp, and by walk-in hunters. I’m sure we’re still have quite a few hunters going there. People can still walk in basically anywhere they can get on the other parts of the areas.”

Dollison says the flooding isn’t good for people — but it could be a boost for ducks and other waterfowl. “Waterfowl use water — so having a bunch more water around–especially these flooded, weedy crop fields that weren’t able to be planted and that sort of thing–those are going to be great areas for the waterfowl to use. There’s going to be a lot of migratory habitat for ducks and geese with all this water. So, they’ll be good that way,” Dollison says. “But, it will probably spread the birds out quite a bit more than usual.” Likewise, Dollison doesn’t believe the flooding will significantly impact the area’s deer population. He believes most of the deer herds along the Missouri River have relocated to other areas, such as the Loess Hills.

ATLANTA (AP) — Marcell Ozuna and Kolten Wong each had two-run doubles in the ninth inning as the St. Louis Cardinals overcame shaky defense to extend Atlanta’s postseason misery, holding on for a wild 7-6 victory in Game 1 of the NL Division Series. The Braves didn’t go quietly in their half of the ninth. Ronald Acuña Jr. hit a two-run homer and Freddie Freeman added a solo shot. But Carlos Martinez got the final two outs to put the Cardinals ahead in the best-of-five series.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The popularity of Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has soared into the stratosphere in just over one season as the starter, each no-look or left-handed passes drawing a fresh chorus of acclaim. It’s not just the fans that are the fans, either. The truth is even opposing players and coaches are in awe at what the league MVP has done so far.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The primetime showdown Sunday between the Indianapolis Colts and Kansas City Chiefs was supposed to be a matchup of Super Bowl contenders with young quarterbacks poised to begin a rivalry that could stretch the next decade or more. But that was thrown into jeopardy when Andrew Luck retired. Now, with the emergence of Jacoby Brissett, there is still plenty of intrigue when the Colts visit Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs on Sunday night.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — No. 14 Iowa and No. 19 Michigan have at least one thing in common, failing to finish first since the schools shared the Big Ten title in 2004 Iowa is in its longest conference championship drought since going two-plus decades between the titles won by the Forest Evashevski-led team in 1960 and coach Hayden Fry’s first of three conference championships in 1981. Michigan is in its longest skid without a conference title in program history.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The Big 12 finally has a full slate of conference games this weekend. And by Sunday, the league should have a pretty good idea of who will be the favorites to challenge Oklahoma or Texas for spots in the league championship game in December. The No. 6 Sooners and No. 11 Longhorns remain the favorites to reach the title game, but they meet in the Cotton Bowl in Dallas on Oct. 12. That brings pressure to avoid another loss that could disrupt a title rematch.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska will be the first school in the Big Ten to offer a Spanish-language radio broadcast for a football game when the Cornhuskers play Northwestern this weekend. The state of Nebraska, by percentage, has one of the highest Hispanic populations in the Big Ten footprint. Husker Sports Network general manager David Witty said affiliates have told him there is demand for a Spanish-language broadcast. Eight schools in Power Five conferences have Spanish broadcasts for all or some of their games.
