Racing and Gaming Administrator finds no issues in first month of sports gambling

News, Sports

September 13th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) — Sunday marks one month since sports gambling was legalized in the state of Iowa, and the administrator of the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission says things seem to be running smoothly at the state’s casinos. Brian Ohorilko says the commission is happy with the way the casinos have handled things.

“There have been a few bugs here and there with regard to the online apps, things that are more cosmetic, nothing operationally, and so from that standpoint we’ve been very pleased,” Ohorilko says. He says casino operators have happy with the additional traffic they’re seeing with sports betting. “As we sit here today, things have appeared to go pretty smoothly,” He says, “I think the operators that have launched already are pleased with the numbers and the attendance. At least at this point, things seem to be going well.”

Ohorilko says people should be patient with their local casino as sports gambling is still in the early stages of being implemented in the state.  “I still caution people that we are early on in the process, and one of the reasons why it was beneficial to launch in mid-August for those companies that were ready was to try to work out some of the bugs prior to the busiest season for sports wagering, and that’s what started last weekend with N-F-L season,” according to Ohorilko. “And so we’ll start really getting a good handle as to what could be potential issues that come up.”

One of the big weekends for sports gambling in the state could be this weekend’s matchup between Iowa and Iowa State on the football field. Ohorilko says it is also one of the reason casinos wanted to try to have their sportsbook operations going in anticipation of some friendly wagers for this weekend’s game. ”N-F-L season is important, but this game this weekend, a lot of people are interested in it, and I think a lot of people just to have a legal, friendly wager on the game, I think there’s something that people are excited about. So we’ll see how the numbers go,” according to Ohorilko.”I will say that until the market has settled, and all 18 and of the casinos that have applied for a sports wagering license are up and running, I don’t think we’ll have the true numbers, that true feeling for what it will look like, but I do think that this weekend will likely be the busiest to this point in time for the state.”

Sports betting operations are open for business in 14 of the 19 state licensed casinos. The Diamond Jo Worth casino near Northwood opened their sportsbook operation two weeks ago, with plans to introduce their online and betting apps by the end of the year.

Ames doubles fine for illegal parking on football game days

News, Sports

September 13th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Football fans intending to drive to Jack Trice Stadium in Ames for Saturday’s game between Iowa State University and the University of Iowa face a bigger parking challenge than usual: Fines for illegal parking have been doubled. The city passed an ordinance earlier this year to raise the fine to $40 from $20 for illegal parking from 6 a.m. to midnight on game days.

Geoff Huff with the Ames Police Department says most lots near the stadium charge $20 to park, so people were paying the same in fines to park illegally and closer to the stadium than paying to park legally elsewhere.

Huff says police project around 150,000 people will be in and around the stadium Saturday, compared with an estimated 80,000 in the area for the game two years ago. He says the increase will come in part because ESPN’s College GameDay production and crew have come to town.

Midwest Sports Headlines: 9/13/19

Sports

September 13th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

DENVER (AP) — Dexter Fowler and Kolten Wong opened the game with successive home runs and the St. Louis Cardinals connected five times in all to beat the Colorado Rockies 10-3. Marcell Ozuna, Rangel Ravelo and Harrison Bader also homered for St. Louis, which holds a four-game lead over Chicago and Milwaukee atop the NL Central. Held to a total of two runs in losing the first two games of the series at Coors Field, the Cardinals quickly bounced back. Fowler homered on the first pitch of the game.

CHICAGO (AP) — Hunter Dozier hit a tie-breaking, three-run home run in the sixth, Jorge Soler had his third homer in two days and the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 6-3. Whit Merrifield walked and Soler singled off Chicago starter Lucas Giolito in the decisive inning. Then Dozier drove a 1-2 pitch into the left-field bleachers for a 5-2 lead. The homers spoiled a record performance by Giolito, who set a team mark with eight consecutive strikeouts.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Despite an offseason overhaul of the Chiefs defense, Week 1 proved that there is still plenty of room for improvement. Kansas City was sliced to shreds by a sixth-round pick, Gardner Minshew, despite rolling to a 40-26 victory over the Jaguars.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — When AFC West rivals Kansas City and Oakland meet both teams will be without the receivers they thought would be major parts of their offense. Tyreek Hill of the Chiefs got injured in Week 1, while the Raiders released Antonio Brown two days before their opener. Sammy Watkins stepped up last week for Kansas City. Oakland got big contributions from Tyrell Williams and Darren Waller.

ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) — It will be the end of an era of sorts this weekend in Oakland. Not that anyone figures to be mourning what should be the final NFL game ever played on a field with infield dirt, especially the players who have had to deal with the bad footing, ripped jerseys, scraped arms and legs and hard falls onto a surface with no cushion.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Kansas State heads to Mississippi State for its first road game under Chris Klieman, while Kansas hits the road to Boston College for the first time under Les Miles. West Virginia has a home game against North Carolina State and Texas Tech heads to Arizona. What do they all have in common? The four Big 12 programs have a chance to make Power Five statements this weekend for their new head coaches.
