Sports

January 16th, 2021 by admin

By ERIC OLSON AP College Football Writer
One college football season just ended and another one starts in just over a month. All but a few teams in the Football Championship Subdivision shut down in the fall because of the pandemic. They will play a spring season culminating with the NCAA playoffs in April and May. The Ivy League has scrapped football until the fall. The Missouri Valley is among the leagues re-configuring schedules because of schools deciding to opt out. The NCAA playoffs are April 18 through May 15 with 16 teams instead of 24.

Sports

January 15th, 2021 by Ric Hanson

No. 6 Kansas’ scheduled home game Saturday against Iowa State has been postponed because of positive COVID-19 tests and contacting tracing within the Cyclones’ program.

The schools said late Friday that they intend to work with the Big 12 to reschedule the game.

The Jayhawks (10-3, 4-2) are coming off a 75-70 loss to Oklahoma State and now visit second-ranked Baylor on Monday night. The Cyclones (2-7, 0-5) also had their previous game against Kansas State postponed and are scheduled to play No. 4 Texas on Wednesday night.

Harlan alum Osborn named Benedictine head football coach

Sports

January 15th, 2021 by admin

Harlan alum Joel Osborn has been tabbed as the new head football coach at Benedictine College in Kansas. Osborn will take over for Larry Wilcox, who announced his retirement in November.

Osborn has been a longtime member of the Northwest Missouri State football coaching staff after playing football for the Bearcats as well. He has spent time as co-offensive coordinator, recruiting coordinator, running backs coach, and wide receivers coach at Northwest.

In his two seasons as co-offensive coordinator, he helped guide the Bearcats to a record of 22-5 with two MIAA Co-Championships and 2 berths in the NCAA Division II National Playoffs. His teams averaged 41.9 points per game during the 2019 season and 36.6 ppg in 2018.

Osborn was the 2008 MIAA Offensive Player of the Year as quarterback of the Bearcats and played in two NCAA Division II Championships in his tenure.

He will be formally introduced as coach on Tuesday during a special Facebook live event. He takes over a very successful Benedictine Ravens program. Coach Wilcox won 304 games between 1979 and 2020.

High-scoring Caitlin Clark fitting right in with Iowa women

Sports

January 14th, 2021 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Caitlin Clark already is a star for the Iowa women’s basketball team. The freshman guard from West Des Moines, Iowa, is third in the nation with just under 26 points a game. She’s been named Big Ten player of the week three times and conference freshman of the week six times.

Iowa guard Caitlin Clark, right, celebrates with coach Lisa Bluder during the first half of the team’s NCAA college basketball game against Ohio State, Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2021, in Iowa City, Iowa. Clark is fourth in the nation in scoring, fourth in the nation in assists and ninth in assists per game. She is also second on the team in rebounds and tied for the team lead in blocked shots. “She’s not one-dimensional,” Bluder said. (AP Photo/Charlie Neibergall)

Teammates say Clark has picked up where 2020 Big Ten player of the year Kathleen Doyle left off. Clark has had four games with 30 or more points and she leads the Big Ten in assists.
