South Dakota builds early lead to take down UNI

News, Sports

October 17th, 2021 by admin

The South Dakota Coyotes built an early lead and held on for a win over the UNI Panthers 34-21 on Saturday at the UNI-Dome. The Coyotes built a 24-0 lead by halftime behind two touchdown passes and one on the ground.

UNI scored the first two touchdowns of the second half with a Vance McShane 62 yard run and a 28-yard hookup from Theo Day to Sam Schnee. The Coyotes would counter back though with 45 yard field goal and a Nate Thomas touchdown run to lead 34-14 by the end of the third. Theo Day hit Sergio Morancy for a 20 yard score with 3:37 left to tally the final margin.

UNI outgained USD 393 to 314 but the Coyotes had a 13 minute advantage in time of possession. The Coyotes took advantage of two big turnovers and a botched punt by the Panthers to aid in their victory as well.

South Dakota improved to 5-2 on the season and 3-1 in the Valley. UNI falls to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in MVC play.

Next up for UNI is a road trip to Brookings, SD to face South Dakota State next Saturday. That game has been set for a 2:00 p.m. kickoff and will be available on ESPN3.

San Diego answered right back with a 94-yard drive that was capped by a 10-yard touchdown pass to tie the game up. The deciding score came on a 44-yard field goal with 9:50 left. Iowa State runs past K-State

Sports

October 17th, 2021 by admin

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Breece Hall rushed for a career-high 197 yards and two touchdowns and Brock Purdy was an efficient 22-of-25 for 208 yards and a score as Iowa State downed Kansas State 33-20 Saturday night. Purdy set the school record for completion percentage and now owns two of the top three totals in program history.

The Wildcats had won 15 of the last 16 games in Manhattan. The teams split the last four meetings in the series, with each team winning two home games. Prior to that, K-State had won 10 straight games in the series.

K-State quarterback Skylar Thompson was 15-of-23 for 206 yards and two touchdowns and one interception.

Hall has now rushed for a touchdown in 18 straight games, a Big 12 record and the fifth longest streak in FBS since 1996.

Hall rushed 75 yards for a touchdown on the opening play of the game, finding a hole on the right side of the offensive line and racing untouched until the 10-yard line, where he eluded a defender diving for his feet.

After Greg Eisworth intercepted Thompson, Andrew Mevis hit a 44-yard field goal to give Iowa State a 10-0 lead.

After K-State converted a second-and-23 for a first down, Thompson found Phillip Brooks for a 40-yard touchdown pass to get the Cats on the board.

Kansas State missed a chance to tie the score on a 33-yard field goal when Taiten Winkel missed wide right. Iowa State responded with a 14-play, 80-yard drive capped by Hall’s 1-yard run. Mevis hit a 41-yard field goal as time expired to take a 20-7 lead to the half.

Iowa State started the second half with an 18-play, 93-yard drive that took more than 10 minutes off the clock. Purdy hit Sean Shaw in the front corner of the end zone for an 11-yard touchdown to close the drive.

Thompson punched it in from the 1-yard line in the fourth quarter to cut it to 27-13 and Mevis connected on another 41-yard field goal to extend the lead to 30-13.

K-State followed with an 11-play, 75-yard drive capped by Thompson’s nine-yard scoring pass to Malik Knowles. Mevis then hit his fourth field goal, this one from 40 yards.

Purdue took the lead for good with a touchdown pass :19 before halftime from O’Connell to TJ Sheffield. The Boilermakers would add a 31-yard field goal and Bell’s touchdown to seal the win in the second half. It was the first time an AP top 2 team lost to an unranked team at home since 2014.

Iowa quarterback Spencer Petras had a tough day going 17 of 32 passing with 4 interceptions. Ivory Kelly-Martin had the lone score of the day for Iowa on a 3 yard run in the second quarter.

Purdue improved to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the Big 10. Iowa suffers their first loss of the season and are now 6-1 overall and 3-1 in Big 10 play.

Timely plays send Atlantic past Saydel

Sports

October 16th, 2021 by admin

The Atlantic Trojans grabbed their third win of the 2021 football season with a 40-12 win at Saydel on Friday. The Trojans never trailed and had control of the game by halftime thanks to a Saydel special teams error and a couple of big interceptions.

Neither team was able to move the ball the first three possessions, but Atlantic caught a break on their second punt. Return man Austin Chally muffed the catch and Atlantic recovered the ball at the Saydel 30 yard line. 6 plays later Easton O’Brien scampered in from 7 yards out for the first score of the night. Saydel almost answered right back. The Eagles got all the way to the Atlantic 1 yard line but were stuffed on two runs. After a timeout the Eagles tried a pass to the right flat and Ethan Sturm picked off Judd Roberts pass at the goaline and brought it out to the 19 yard line with :13 seconds left in the first quarter. The Trojans were able to work all the way to the Eagles 8 yard line but settled for a 25 yard field goal from Lane Nelson to make it 10-0. Both teams traded empty possessions following the field goal. Atlantic went to punt it away and the ball sailed over Gannon O’Hara’s head. He was able to pick it up and run away from defenders and came up just a few yards short of getting a first down. The Eagles took over at the Trojan 49 but a holding penalty on 2nd down moved them back to their own 40. Then Colton Becker picked off another Roberts pass and returned it all the way to the 1. Caden Andersen punched it in on a quarterback sneak, putting Atlantic up 17-0. Lane Nelson would tack on a 33 yard field goal as time expired to end the half with a 20-0 lead for Atlantic.

The Trojans added a Caden Andersen to Jayden Proehl 18 yard touchdown hookup to start the second half. Dante Hedrington and Isaac Hansen would add touchdown runs for Atlantic later on. Saydel got their first score on a 90-yard kickoff return TD for Austin Chally. Judd Roberts hit Austin Maeder for a 22 yard touchdown pass early in the 4th for their other score.

The game was marred by a slew of penalties. 6 unsportsmanlike conduct calls were joined by a handful of personal fouls and three pass interference whistles. Frustration boiled over at the end of the game for the Eagles with three players being ejected with under a minute left due to comments made toward officials. It was an unfortunate end to the game and will affect Saydel’s roster for the final week of the season.

Atlantic improved to 3-5 on the season and moved to 2-2 in the district. The Trojans finish the season at home against Creston next Friday. Saydel fell to 0-8 on the year and 0-4 in district play. The Eagles are set to finish the year with a road trip to ADM.
