October 26th, 2021 by admin

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa sophomore Caitlin Clark was named Preseason Big Ten Player of the Year by the coaches and earned unanimous Preseason All-Big Ten honors, joining junior Monika Czinano on the Preseason All-Big Ten team, the conference office announced Tuesday.

During her freshman campaign, Clark averaged 26.6 points, 7.1 assists, and 5.9 rebounds per game in 30 games, setting the Iowa freshman record with 26.6 points per game recording the fourth-highest single season points per game in Iowa history, and was the 2020-21 NCAA Division I scoring leader. She was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year and earned unanimous All-Big Ten honors.

The West Des Moines, Iowa, native was named national co-Freshman of the Year and first-team All-America by The Athletic, USBWA, and WBCA after leading the nation in total assists (214), total points (799), points per game (26.6), field goals made (266) and 3-pointers made (116), and ranked second in assists per game (7.1) and 3-pointers per game (3.87). In early August, Clark won her third gold medal with USA Basketball and was named the FIBA U19 World Cup Most Valuable Player. The USA Team Captain amassed 100 points, 39 assists, 37 rebounds, seven steals, and six blocks in seven contests.

Czinano, a two-time All-Big Ten selection, earns the second preseason honor of her career. The Watertown, Minnesota, native finished last season leading the country in shooting percentage (66.8) and ranked second nationally, shooting 254 of 380 from the field.

As a junior, Czinano averaged 19.3 points and 5.8 rebounds per game on the season. She scored in double figures during 28 contests, tabbing 11 20-point games — nine against conference opponents.

Clark, Czinano and the Hawkeyes open the 2021-22 season with an exhibition against Truman State on Nov. 4 at 6:30 p.m. (CT) inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Tickets are $5 for adults and admission is free for youth (18 & younger) and UI students.

Iowa town bets steaks vs brats with Wisconsin namesake over football game

Sports

October 26th, 2021 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – The mayors of Altoona, Iowa and Altoona, Wisconsin are holding a friendly wager between the two communities as Iowa plays Wisconsin in football on Saturday. Mayor Dean O’Connor, of the Iowa Altoona, says he’s hoping this will be the second bet he’s won this season, following the Hawkeyes’ victory over the Nittany Lions.

O’Connor says the Altoona restaurant that was offering up the steaks in the original bet, signed back on for the new bet against Wisconsin.

The mayor says this could become an annual tradition.

Altoona, Iowa won the bet with Altoona, Pennsylvania and was sent six boxes of Mallo Cups, a chocolate-covered marshmallow candy. O’Connor says those treats, along with local cash donations of $10,000, will be taken to Iowa City this week to be given to the U-I Hospitals and Clinics. Unlike many Iowa town names, Altoona does not have Native American roots. O’Connor says the name comes from the Latin word “altus,” meaning high point or high place.

Northern Iowa coach Mark Farley previews Southern Illinois

Sports

October 26th, 2021 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – The UNI Panthers are up to 17th in the latest FCS coaches poll. The Panthers snapped a two game losing skid with a victory at sixth ranked South Dakota State. They host third ranked Southern Illinois on Saturday.

That’s UNI coach Mark Farley. Sophomore quarterback Nic Baker leads a Saluki offense that is scoring nearly 38 points per game.

Farley says Baker is elusive in the pocket.

The Salukis are tied at the top of the Missouri Valley standings with a 4-0 record. The rest of the league already has two or more losses.

Farley says there is a lot of balance in the league.

The Panthers are 4-3 overall.

CAM falls to Ankeny Christian in Regional Semifinal

Sports

October 25th, 2021 by admin

The CAM volleyball team had their season come to a close with a loss to Ankeny Christian 3-0 in the Class 1A Region 3 Semifinals on Monday. The 6th ranked Eagles were able to put together more significant runs all match long.

The Eagles edged out to a 6 point lead at 23-17 late in the opening set but the Cougars responded. CAM went on a six point rally to tie the set at 23 but that was all they could sustain. A service error and a kill on the right side gave the Eagles the next two points and the set. The Eagles seemed to ride that energy the rest of the way. The Eagles put together two runs of five points and one of 6 in the second to win 25-12. They went on to have two 6-point rallies in the third and secured the sweep with a 25-11 set three advantage.

CAM ends their season with a record of 23-11. Ankeny Christian improved to 33-3 with the victory and advance to the Region 3 Final on Wednesday. The Eagles will face Gladbrook-Reinbeck at Marshalltown High School at 6:00 p.m.

Cardinals name Oliver “Oli” Marmol new Manager

Sports

October 25th, 2021 by Jim Field

ST. LOUIS, MO. – October 25, 2021 – The St. Louis Cardinals announced this morning that they have named Oliver “Oli” Marmol as the team’s manager, the 51st field manager in franchise history, and at age 35, the youngest since Marty Marion who piloted the team at age 34 in 1951.   Marmol served as the Cardinals bench coach the past three seasons (2019-21), and was the team’s first base coach from 2017-18.

“We are extremely pleased to name Oliver “Oli” Marmol as our new manager,” stated Cardinals’ Chairman & Chief Executive Officer Bill DeWitt, Jr.  “Oli is a career member of the Cardinals organization, and someone who has built excellent working relationships with our players, coaches and staff members at all levels.  We believe that he possesses strong managerial skills that will allow for the continued success of our team.”

Oli, who was born in New Jersey, and is of Dominican descent, becomes only the second minority to manage the Cardinals and the first since Cuban-born Mike González did so for parts of the 1938 and 1940 seasons.

“The entire organization felt that it was important to try and maintain the success, progress, and momentum that was built over the course of 2021 season,” said Cardinals President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak.  “We are excited to have Oli helping us to further grow that effort as we move forward.  Oli has always been someone that I knew would one day become a manager, and today I am pleased to join in introducing him as the manager of the St. Louis Cardinals.”

Marmol spent five seasons (2012-16) managing in the Cardinals farm system, leading his teams to the postseason in four of those five seasons, including the New York-Penn League title in 2014 with State College.  Marmol’s teams were a combined 268-225 (.544), posting league-best 48-win seasons in both 2013 and 2014 at State College.

In 2015, his first season managing at Palm Beach, the Cardinals reached the Florida State League’s (A) postseason for the first time since 2008 when Oli was serving as the Palm Beach second baseman.

Oli’s first managerial experience came in 2012 with Johnson City, leading the rookie-league Cardinals to a 39-28 mark and a playoff appearance.  His first coaching position was as the hitting coach with the Gulf Coast League Cardinals in 2011.

Marmol, who was drafted (6th round) by the Cardinals in 2007 as an infielder out of the College of Charleston (S.C.),  finished his four-year (2007-2010) professional playing career at Palm Beach of the Class A Florida State League.   Oli was first drafted in 2004 by the Pittsburgh Pirates out of Dr. Phillips High School in Orlando, Fla, but chose to attend college and did not sign.

Marmol was voted the recipient of the Cardinals organization’s prestigious George Kissell Award in 2013 for excellence in player development.

Oli, and his wife, Amber, have two daughters; Riley and Kylie.

McDonald IV and Purdy earn Big 12 Weekly Player of the Week honors

Sports

October 25th, 2021 by admin

IRVING, Texas – Iowa State All-Big 12 senior quarterback Brock Purdy and All-Big 12 junior defensive end Will McDonald IV were honored by the Big 12 Conference today for their performances against Oklahoma State on Saturday.

Purdy was awarded the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week and McDonald IV was the Big 12’s Defensive Player of the Week.

Purdy was sensational on Saturday, guiding the Cyclones to a 24-21 win over No. 8 Oklahoma State, ISU’s fourth win over a Top 10 team since 2017.

A native of Gilbert, Ariz., Purdy passed for 307 yards, his 13th career 300-yard passing game, on 27-of-33 passing. Purdy is the only player in the nation to complete 80 pct. of his passes in a game four times (min. 15 att.).

He also tossed a pair of touchdowns to Xavier Hutchinson and helped orchestrate a fourth quarter come-from-behind victory for the seventh time in his career.

Purdy has been one of the most accurate passers in the nation this season, ranking second nationally in completion pct. at 75.3 pct. His four 80 pct. completion games all rank in ISU’s single-game Top 11.

Purdy, who has the fifth-most starts among active FBS QBs (40), is the greatest signal-caller in Cyclone history. He currently owns/shares 31 school records, including all-time QB wins (28).

A four-time career winner of the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week, Purdy is 14-1 vs. Big 12 opponents in his career at Jack Trice Stadium.

McDonald IV, a native of Pewaukee, Wis., is one of the best pass rushers in the nation and he continued his incredible play over the weekend with a dominating performance vs. the Cowboys.

McDonald IV tallied five tackles, 2.0 sacks, two QB hurries and a pass breakup to aid the Cyclones to victory.

With the Cyclones clinging to a 24-21 victory late in the fourth quarter, McDonald IV registered back-to-back sacks to force a Cowboy punt.

McDonald IV leads the Big 12 and ranks fourth nationally in sacks per game at 1.07. His 7.5 sacks on the year already ranks in ISU’s season Top 10 and his 25.0 sacks in his career is 0.5 shy from the school record.

McDonald IV has been the most consistent pass-rusher in the NCAA in the last two seasons, registering 23.0 sacks in his last 23 games.

Titans roll past Chiefs with fast start

Sports

October 25th, 2021 by admin

The Tennessee Titans struck early and often and took down the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday in Nashville 27-3. The Titans scored on their first drive of the game and built a 27-0 lead by halftime.

Kansas City struggled getting the offense going and the defense was gouged early. Patrick Mahomes finished 20-35 for 206 yards and 1 interception. Ryan Tannehill had a nice outing for the Titans with 270 yards passing, 1 touchdown, and 1 interception. AJ Brown caught 8 ball for 133 yards and a touchdown.

Mahomes sat out the last drive for KC after getting his neck pushed back awkwardly on the previous possession. The team said he came out of protocol fine but held him out as a precaution the rest of the way.

The Chiefs fall to 3-4 on the season and will try to regroup for a Monday Night Football meeting with the New York Giants next week. The Titans improved to 5-2.
