New chapter to be written in CAM versus F-M series

Sports

October 28th, 2021 by admin

Two familiar opponents will square off in Anita Friday night for a spot in the 8-Player Football Quarterfinals. The CAM Cougars (9-0) will host the Fremont-Mills Knights (6-3) in a rematch of a week one contest that the Cougars came out on top of 48-6. Prior to that one the Knights had dominated the series, including a 2 point win in the Quarterfinals last year. CAM Head Coach Barry Bower said they have a lot of respect for the Knights.

The Knights have certainly improved throughout the season and have leaned in to the power running game more down the stretch. F-M Head Coach Jeremy Christiansen said their offense does start on the ground.

CAM has been efficient on offense with Lane Spieker piling up the stats. He currently leads all classes with 50 rushing touchdowns on the season and is second in the state with 62 total scores. Spieker gets a lot of the attention but Coach Bower said the entire team has been working in concert.

Coach Christiansen said the line of scrimmage is going to be an important battle to determine if his squad can have success.

We’ll have coverage of the Cougars and the Knights on KJAN. Chris Parks and Mike Smith will have the call from Anita. Catch our final pick ’em show of the year Who’s Gonna Win? at 6:00 p.m. to start your night, followed by pregame at 6:30 p.m. and kickoff at 7:00 p.m. Tune in on AM 1220, FM 101.1, and online at KJAN.com

Iowa’s Shateah Wetering suffers torn ACL

Sports

October 28th, 2021 by admin

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa women’s basketball sophomore Shateah Wetering suffered a season-ending torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) of her left knee in practice. The announcement came Thursday by P. Sue Beckwith, MD, head coach Lisa Bluder.

“Shateah (Wetering) was having a terrific preseason when she suffered this injury,” Bluder said. “She was playing confidently and stood out as one of our most improved players from last season. Shateah will use this year to rehab, learn from a coach’s perspective and be an active teammate for her sisters on the team.”

Wetering, a Montezuma, Iowa, native played in seven games last season, averaging three minutes and tallying five points and four rebounds.

Area Student Anglers are set to Compete at a National Bass Tournament

Ag/Outdoor, Sports

October 28th, 2021 by Jim Field

Atlantic’s Joaquin Wailes and Corning’s Joey Oathoudt are making final preparations to compete this weekend on a national stage in Branson, Missouri at the Bass Cat Big Bass Zone Junior Championship, presented by Bassmasters. Wailes a freshman at Atlantic High School and Oathoudt a senior at Southwest Valley nabbed the biggest 5 bass limit at the state level, which propels them to the BBZ JC Finals this Saturday, Oct 30th on Lake Taneycomo.  They will compete against 54-state championships caliber anglers in the competition for the biggest bass, with the top prize being a Bass Cat boat and scholarships.

Over the last month both anglers have worked extremely hard studying contour lines, water conditions, and waypoints on Lake Taneycomo to figure out best spot to reel in the biggest Bass. In September they traveled to Branson to pre fish the lake to obtain vital information about the lake to help them be prepared for this weekend’s tournament.  “I am excited and pump to go compete,” explained Wailes. “This is a huge tournament and it’s a lot different than the local tournaments I’ve been in. I am glad we had an opportunity to pre fish the lake ahead of time because I will know how to adjust to the changing fishing conditions. I want to thank all our sponsors, my boat caption Rob Clausen and my family for supporting my fishing addiction.“

On Saturday Wailes has been paired with an angler from Pennsylvania and will be the 4th boat to launch at the start of the tournament. Oathoudt is paired with an angler from South Carolina and will launch 20th. The tournament is still a solo competition, and the competitors will spend the day fishing, as they take turns deciding where the boat goes, with one competitor steering it in the morning, and the other angler steering it in the afternoon.

“It will be a great experience and I feel honored to go to represent my family and sponsors at this once-in-a-lifetime event,” Oathoudt said. “I want to thank Bill Siemantel with the BBZ, my grandpa for finding this opportunity. It is going to be a grind, so I am going to focus on tight lines and good hook sets to reel in the biggest bass I can.”

Both anglers are members of the newly formed Southwest Iowa Fishing Team where they fished with other area student anglers. “I am so excited for the boys they definitely put in the work and time to earn their spot in the BBZJC,” Bob Harris the coach of SWIFT said. In our first year as a fishing team, we have had great success with a two SWFT high school teams placing 20th at the TBF/SAF World Championships and 50th in the National Championships, and our junior fishing 4th at the Junior World Championships. We have some great student anglers in Iowa, and I would also like to congratulate Jake Oathoudt and Owen Hoover who also competed hard in the BBZJC tournament but didn’t qualify for the finals.”

On Saturday at 3 pm CST be sure to watch the live weigh-in from Missouri and see who will become the next BBZ JC World Finals Champion. See it live on the Bassmaster Facebook Page (www.facebook.com/bass). Good Luck boys!

Iowa wrestling deals with lofty expectations

Sports

October 28th, 2021 by Ric Hanson

Iowa wrestling coach Tom Brands says there are no automatics in wrestling. The Hawkeyes return nearly the entire lineup from last years team that won the NCAA title and COVID relief means the roster includes several sixth year and even seventh year seniors.

Brands says the Hawkeyes need to stay focused on getting better each day and not the expectations.

Iowa officials says more than 11 thousand, 600 season tickets have been sold for the upcoming season.

Iowa State prepares for hostile environment in Morgantown

Iowa State takes a number 22 ranking on the road to West Virginia this week. The Cyclones climbed back into the Big 12 title hunt with a win over Oklahoma State and need a victory this week to remain there.

That’s ISU receiver Xavier Hutchinson who says the Cyclones are confident after the win over the Cowboys.

Hutchinson says his teammates have prepared him for a hostile environment.

The Cyclones and Mountaineers have a 1:00 p.m. CT kickoff on Saturday.

Iowa offense preapares for stout Badger defense

Sports

October 28th, 2021 by admin

The Iowa offense must find a way to generate some kind of ground game in Saturday’s matchup against Wisconsin. The Badger’s are allowing just over 53 yards of rushing per game.

That’s running back Tyler Goodson who says after a dismal offensive effort against Purdue they are looking to bounce back.

Iowa quarterback Spencer Petras says the Badger defense is always a challenge.

The offense did break through last year with a 28-7 win over Wisconsin in Iowa City.

Senior guard Kyler Schott says an inconsistent run game needs to have some success against the Badgers.

Schott says mistakes have hurt the Iowa run game.

Iowa and Wisconsin kickoff at 11:00am CT Saturday. We’ll have coverage from the Hawkeye Radio Network starting at 9:00 a.m. on KJAN.
