Riverside avenges previous loss to Audubon with 62-58 win Monday

Sports

January 24th, 2022 by admin

Some good defensive pressure and a big night from Grady Jeppesen pushed Riverside to a 62-58 win over Audubon on Monday night in Oakland. It was a close game through most of the first half and the Bulldogs used a 12-3 run to start the second half to grab a lead. The Bulldogs would have to knock down some free throws late to seal their 10th win of the season.

The Bulldogs went 12 for 16 from the free throw line in the second half and an impressive 10 of 11 in the fourth quarter to maintain the lead. Riverside head coach Nicholas Kroon was proud of the Bulldogs resolve down the stretch.

Coach Kroon said they made some defensive adjustments that helped create some steals and scoring chances in the second half.

Jeppesen finished the game with 30 points and grabbed some big steals in the game. He talked about the impact their defensive effort had on the game.

The Bulldogs also got 12 points from Ayden Salais and 10 from Aiden Bell as they improved to 10-7 on the season.

Audubon’s leading scorer was Carson Bauer with 20 points and Collin Bauer added 15 on five made threes. The Wheelers drop to 5-12 on the season.

Hermensen buries 7 threes in Audubon win over Riverside

Aleah Hermensen knocked down seven shots from beyond the three point arc and finished with 29 points to lead the Audubon Wheelers to a 58-32 win over Riverside on Monday night.

Both teams struggled to get their offenses going early but Audubon started to get in a groove late in the first half with a 9-2 run to take a 22-14 lead at the break. The Wheelers then forced the Bulldogs into five straight turnovers to start the second half and the lead ballooned to twenty by the end of the third.

Audubon head coach Darran Miller said they changed some things defensively to get that spark to start the second half.

Coach Miller said Hermensen has the green light to shoot from the outside and it was fun to see her rolling.

Hermensen said she has felt good about her three point shot recently and has been looking for it a bit more.

The Wheelers improved to 12-4 on the season with the win and will face Underwood next on Friday.

Riverside was led by 12 points from Lydia Erickson who hit a couple late threes. The Bulldogs fall to 6-11 on the season and will play Whiting next Monday.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa sophomore Caitlin Clark was named Big Ten Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday.

Clark has tallied 28-career Big Ten weekly honors – 13 freshman, 10 player and five honor roll. This is her fourth-consecutive Big Ten Player of the Week honor and fifth this season.

The West Des Moines, Iowa, native nearly averaged a triple double in two wins over Minnesota and Illinois last week with 26.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and nine assists per game. She shot 22-for-38 (.579) from the field and 6-for-11 (.545) from 3-point range.

In Iowa’s win over Minnesota, Clark registered her second-consecutive, fourth season and fifth career triple-double with 35 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists. Clark is the only Big Ten women’s basketball player to record a triple double in back-to-back games and four triple-doubles in a single season and the first NCAA Division I player (male or female) to record back-to-back 30-plus point triple doubles since 2000.

Clark and the Hawkeyes head to University Park, Pennsylvania, on Tuesday to take on the Penn State Nittany Lions inside Bryce Jordan Center. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. (CT) on B1G Network.

Injury riddled Drake hanging in the Missouri Valley race

Sports

January 24th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – Drake coach Darian DeVries appreciates the effort he is getting from his shorthanded team. Standout forward Tank Hemphill has missed the last four games with a foot injury and senior point guard Roman Penn is playing on a broken foot. Despite that, Penn finished with 18 points and played 41 minutes, Saturday night, as the Bulldogs rallied from a late 10 point deficit for an overtime win at UNI.

That’s Drake coach Darian DeVries. Despite the injuries the Bulldogs sit third in the Missouri Valley race with a 5-2 record.

DeVries likes the toughness of his team.

The Bulldogs visit Illinois State Wednesday night.

Sports

January 24th, 2022 by admin

It will go down as one of the greatest playoff games in NFL history. The Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills combined for 25 points in the final two minutes of regulation in a wild back and forth finish. The Chiefs eventually came out on top in overtime 42-36.

With the Chiefs leading by 5 Josh Allen hit Gabriel Davis for a 27-yard touchdown pass with 1:54 remaining. A two-point conversion toss to Stefon Diggs put the Bills up 29-26. The Chiefs answered 5 plays later with Patrick Mahomes hitting a crossing Tyreek Hill for a 64-yard score to put KC back up 33-29 with 1:02 remaining. The Bills came firing back and Allen hit Davis again on a 4th down throw with 13 seconds left to put the Bills back up 36-33. Mahomes wouldn’t let the game end, hitting Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce on back-to-back plays to give Harrison Butker a 49-yard field goal attempt to tie it. Butker came through and the game went to overtime.

The Chiefs won the coin toss to receive the ball first in overtime and they made it count. Kansas City drove down to the 8-yard line before Mahomes hit Travis Kelce on the right side of the end zone for the winning score, setting off a wild celebration at Arrowhead Stadium.

The Chiefs will host the AFC Championship for the 4th year in a row, welcoming in the Cincinnati Bengals for the title game next Sunday afternoon.

Mahomes finished 33-44 passing for 378 yards and 3 touchdowns. Tyreek Hill hauled in 11 catches for 150 yards and 1 touchdown.
