Hawkeyes draw Georgia Tech match-up for ACC/Big Ten Men’s Basketball Challenge

Sports

June 24th, 2022 by admin

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa men’s basketball team will host Georgia Tech on Tuesday, Nov. 29, as part of the 2022 ACC/Big Ten Men’s Basketball Challenge.

The Hawkeyes have won seven of their last nine Challenge games, including their last four: Virginia (75-74) in 2021; North Carolina (93-80) in 2020; Syracuse (68-54) in 2019; and Pitt (69-68) in 2018. Iowa has also won its last four Challenge home games inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena: Notre Dame (2013); Florida State (2015); Pitt (018); and North Carolina (2020).

This will be the third overall meeting between the two programs. The Hawkeyes cruised to an 85-67 victory over the Yellow Jackets at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in the second year of the Challenge in 2000. Georgia Tech edged Iowa (79-78) in the second round of the postseason NIT in Iowa City.

The Hawkeyes return five of their top seven scorers from last year’s Big Ten Tournament championship team. Iowa won 26 games, second most in a single season in program history, and tied for fourth in the conference standings last season. The Hawkeyes have competed in the last three NCAA Tournaments and have been ranked in the final Associated Press Poll each of the last three years: No. 16 in 2020, No. 8 in 2021 and No. 25 in 2022. Patrick McCaffery (10.5 ppg; 3.6 rpg), Kris Murray (9.7 ppg; 4.3 rpg) and Filip Rebraca (5.8 ppg; 5.6 rpg) are Iowa’s three returning starters.

Georgia Tech is coached by Josh Pastner, who just completed his sixth season in Atlanta. He guided the Yellow Jackets to 12 victories and a 14th-place finish a year ago in the ACC. In 2021, Pastner and Georgia Tech won the ACC Tournament. The Yellow Jackets return two starters from last season’s team: guard Kyle Sturdivant (7.6 ppg; 2.5 rpg) and center Rodney Howard (6.5 ppg; 5.1 rpg).

Game times and television information will be announced at a later date. ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPNU will combine to televise all 14 games of the three-day event matching top college basketball programs playing for conference supremacy and the Commissioner’s Cup. The Big Ten won last season’s Challenge, 8-6.

Iowa’s complete 2022-23 men’s basketball schedule will be announced later this summer.

The 2022 Challenge schedule is listed below:

Monday, Nov. 28

Pitt at Northwestern

Tuesday, Nov. 29

Virginia at Michigan
Georgia Tech at Iowa

Harlan takes advantage of Atlantic miscues in 14-4 baseball win

Sports

June 24th, 2022 by admin

The Harlan Cyclones completed a suspended game win 8-6 over Atlantic on Thursday night and then took advantage of some Trojan mistakes in the regularly scheduled game to follow to win 14-4 in 6 innings.

Atlantic scored 4 runs in the 7th inning of the first game and seemed to carry a bit of that momentum into the second game, scoring two runs in the first on a double by Wyatt Redinbaugh. Harlan answered back though with two runs of their own on a Alex Monson double in the bottom of the first. The game stayed 2-2 until Harlan jumped ahead with 2 runs in the 3rd and 1 in the 4th. Atlantic got back within one in the top of the 5th with an RBI ground-out from Garrett McLaren and an RBI single from Redinbaugh. After that the tide turned in favor of Harlan.

The Cyclones piled on 5 runs in the bottom of the fifth taking advantage of a host of Trojan mistakes. Atlantic had an errant throw and wild pitch cost them two runs. There was also a dropped strikeout that let a Cyclone runner get aboard and a hit batter in the frame. Stephen Leinen delivered the big hit of the inning for the Cyclones with a two-run homer to left field that put the Cyclones up by three. The Cyclones piled on four more runs in the 6th to end the game by the ten-run rule.

Jayden Proehl took the loss on the hill for the Trojans working through the first five innings. Carter Pellett came on in the 6th. Brayden Ernst picked up the win, going the distance for Harlan. Ernst kept the ball around the plate and was pretty solid on the mound, limiting Atlantic to 6 hits.

Harlan improved to 17-6 with the two wins. Atlantic drops to 6-14. The Trojans finish out the week with a home game tonight against Lewis Central. That game has been moved up to a 5:30 p.m. first pitch.

Sports

The Ole Miss Rebels picked up a 2-0 win over the Arkansas Razorbacks in an elimination game on Thursday at the College World Series in Omaha. The Rebels earned a trip to the Championship Series against Oklahoma this weekend.

Dylan DeLucia threw a complete game shutout for the Rebels. He had 7 strikeouts and allowed just four hits. Ole Miss got RBI hits from Kevin Graham and Calvin Harris.

Arkansas ends their season with a record of 46-21. Ole Miss improved to 40-23.

The best of three Championship series between Ole Miss and Oklahoma will begin with a 6:00 p.m. game on Saturday on ESPN. They will play again Sunday at 2:00 p.m. and then if necessary a final game Monday at 6:00 p.m.

Ahron Ulis eyes bigger role at Iowa

Sports

June 24th, 2022 by admin

Iowa’s Ahron Ulis is expected to step up his game at the point guard spot next season. With Jordan Bohannon out of eligibility and Joe Toussaint off to West Virginia the junior from Chicago is expected to have an expanded role.

Improved shooting is a goal. Ulis played in 35 games last season but shot just 34 percent from the field and made only four of 12 from three point range.

Ulis says Iowa coach Fran McCaffery talked to him about his expanded role.
