After coming up short in the Substate Finals three of the previous four seasons, the CAM baseball team was able to get over the hump and get to the State Baseball Tournament this year. Now the Cougars are ready to bring that determination to the field at Merchants Park in Carroll. CAM (27-2) squares off against the New London Tigers (28-1) in the 1A Quarterfinals today and we’ll have it on KJAN. CAM Head Coach Dan Daugherty said it was a great experience to win that Substate Final over Ogden and achieve a big goal.

Coach Daugherty said preparations for State have gone well the past week and they are ready for the next challenge. He’s been impressed with what he’s seen from New London.

Both squads are very senior led and Coach Daugherty said it has been fun to watch this talented senior group grow through the program.

The Cougars and the Tigers are set to throw out the first pitch at 4:30 p.m. and our pregame coverage on KJAN will get underway at 3:30 p.m. You can catch the full interview with Coach Daugherty during pregame.

The State high school baseball tournament begins this (Monday) morning in Carroll with the quarterfinal round in class 1A. In the opener, 10th ranked Kingsley-Pierson will try to slow down the running game of sixth rated North Linn. The Lynx have swiped 219 bases in posting a 21-2 record.

That’s Kingsley-Pierson coach Taylor Doeschot who says it starts with limiting baserunners.

Doeschot hopes experience is a plus for the Panthers.

Top ranked Remsen St. Mary’s takes a 33-0 record into a 1A quarterfinal against South Winneshiek. Remsen St. Mary’s coach Dean Harpenau says the Hawks know they will have a challenge against a South Winn team beat Lansing Kee in a sub state final.

Harpenau says South Winneshiek features outstanding pitching.

Harpenau says the Hawks need to string quality at-bats together.

It has been a busy summer for Iowa quarterback Spencer Petras. Petras been preparing for his senior season he also spent time at the Manning Passing Academy.

He says it was a chance to get high level instruction on and off the field.

Petras says it was a good experience physically and mentally.

Iowa State coach Matt Campbell says he is never concerned with expectations for his team and this season is no different. ISU finished 7-6 last season after opening as a top ten team and this year the prognosticators have more moderate expectations for the Cyclones.

Campbell says the internal expectations are always high.

Campbell has led the Cyclones to five straight bowl games and is now the second longest tenured coach in the Big 12.

Redshirt sophomore Hunter Dekkers steps in to replace four year starter Brock Purdy at quarterback.

Campbell says everyone has confidence in Dekkers.

Campbell made his comments at Big 12 Media Days in Dallas.

Drake basketball coach Darian DeVries expects senior guards D.J, Wilkins and Roman Penn will be ready for next season. Wilkins started 31 games and was one of the top defenders in the Missouri Valley Conference before suffering a late season knee injury.

Penn has returned to summer workouts after undergoing foot surgery.

A healthy Penn would be a huge lift for a Bulldog team that returns several key players from a team that posted 25 victories last season.
