Special teams miscues prove costly for Atlantic against Glenwood

Podcasts, Sports

August 27th, 2022 by admin

The Atlantic Trojans fought tough on the road against the Glenwood Rams on Friday night but ultimately fell 43-27. The Trojans had some great stretches of offensive play but a number of special teams mistakes throughout the game were costly. The Rams also hit on a number of big plays offensively to grab the win.

The game opened with some excitement as the Rams thought they ran the opening kickoff back for a touchdown but the play was called back for a block in the back. The Trojan defense then came through with a couple of tackles for loss and got the ball back with an interception by Jackson McLaren. Atlantic then hit paydirt on their first offensive play with Caden Andersen hitting Colton Rasmussen for a 47 yard passing score. Glenwood would respond with a 12 yard touchdown pass from Kayden Anderson to Payton Longmeyer to tie the game up at 7. The Trojans were forced to punt on their next possession and the Rams hit it big two plays later. Tate Mayberry ripped off a 66-yard touchdown run to give the Rams a 14-7 lead, and they would hold that lead the rest of the way.

Atlantic got back within 7 on a 14-yard screen pass to Tanner O’Brien to make it 21-14. The Rams answered back again with a 57-yard strike from Anderson to Cody Krause. Atlantic then stalled on their next drive and had a punt blocked. The ball sailed back into the endzone and went out of bounds to produce a safety for the Rams. The teams then traded a couple of punts and a line drive punt from Carter Pellett was returned by Longmeyer to the Atlantic 9 yard line. The Rams cashed in on the next play with another TD run from Mayberry to make it 36-14 at half.

The second half was much quieter on the scoring front. Atlantic got to the one yard line on their second possession of the half, but a lost yardage play pushed them back and they failed to score. Their next possession ended with a Tanner O’Brien 2 yard score to get within 36-20. Again the Rams squashed that momentum though with a 65- yard hookup from Anderson to Krause to put the game out of reach. The Trojans scored once more on a 53-yard pass from Andersen to Rasmussen with 3:21 to play and that ended the scoring.

Atlantic opens up at 0-1 and will now prep for Kuemper Catholic at home next week. Glenwood moves to 1-1 on the season and will head to Indianola next week.

Regulators fine sports book for allowing credit card use on site

News, Sports

August 26th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – State regulators issued a 60-thousand dollar penalty to a sports book for illegally allowing the use of credit cards on its site. Racing and Gaming administrator, Brian Ohorilko, says the penalty involves American Wagering, which does businesses as Caesars Sportsbook. “There was a specific incident in July of 2021, where it was discovered that there were a number of transactions that took place using a credit card. And so it was discovered at that time, a full audit was completed,” Ohorilko says. He says the audit found multiple issues.

“Throughout certain periods in 2020, 2021, prepaid debit cards were purchased using a credit card and a number of those transactions were permitted and in went through,” he says. There were a total of 485 transactions worth 212-thousand dollars — which he says the Racing and Gaming Commission felt was fairly egregious. This follows a similar penalty levied at the last commission meeting against FanDuel for 75-thousand dollars for a two-count violation.

Ohorilko says this is something that has come up with the sports books and there will be some more penalties in the Commission’s future meetings. “And it’s important for the sports books to get a handle on,” he says. In Iowa credit cards cannot be used to wager on sports betting or any form of gambling.” Ohorilko says the companies are working to make corrections so these types of violations. “We’ve heard some positive things from the different operators that have had problems and that they are taking steps to not only correct the action — but to develop procedures to audit these types of things — so that they’re doing their own self checks,” Ohorilko says.

Ohorilko says there are some other penalties — such as license suspensions — the commissioners can levy if the problems don’t get correct. But he says the ultimate goal with any of these violations is to get them back into compliance with the law.

The Class 4A top-ranked Lewis Central Titans rallied from 11 points down with a hair over 3 minutes left in the game to beat the Class 3A #1 Harlan Cyclones 30-27 on Thursday night in Council Bluffs.

Harlan’s Aidan Hall scored on a 45 yard run to give Harlan a 27-16 lead with 3:08 to go. Luciano Fidone then gave Lewis Central a chance with a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. The Titans added a two-point conversion to make it 27-24. The Titans then were penalized on their first onside kick attempt and it proved to be a good penalty. The next onside try created a scrum and LC came away with possession with 2:51 left. The Titans then moved their way to the red zone and Braylon Kammrad scored on a run from 6 yards out to put the Titans ahead with 59 seconds left. Harlan failed to get a first down on their last minute possession and the Titans prevailed.

Braylon Kammrad finished with 192 yards passing and 26 yards on the ground. Caleb Moore ran for 83 yards for the Titans. Curtis Witte pulled down 121 yards receiving.

Harlan’s Teagan Kasperbauer threw for 197 yards and two touchdowns. Aidan Hall had 68 yards receiving and 76 rushing. Austin Kenkel piled up 77 rushing yards and Cade Sears had 87 yards receiving to lead the Cyclones.

Defense elevated Iowa State in Big 12

Sports

August 26th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

In a conference known for high scoring games Iowa State became a contender with defense. Cyclone defensive coordinator Jon Heacock is the architect of a unique defense that burst onto the scene in 2017 by giving up only 17 points per game. ISU has finished in the top three in defense every year since.

Whether it is called a 3-3-5, a 3-5-3 or a Broken Stack defense, Heacock says it works because the players have bought in.

Heacock has met with coaches at all levels from across the country who are interested to learn about how they play defense.

Iowa State opens at home on September third against Southeast Missouri.

Atlantic football travels to Glenwood for season opener

Sports

August 25th, 2022 by admin

Trojan LogoThe Atlantic Trojans will hit the road to Glenwood on Friday night to open up the new high school football season. Atlantic Head Coach Joe Brummer has been pleased with the effort for the Trojans in practice so far and at their scrimmage in Carroll last week.

It will be a great opening test for the Trojans against a Rams team that fell in Week 0 to Sioux City East 50-33. Despite the loss the Rams were able to rack up 361 yards of offense, 346 of those through the air. Coach Brummer said they will need their front seven to lead the way defensively against the Rams quick tempo attack.

Atlantic has a large senior class that returns a lot of playing experience. Glenwood Head Coach Cory Faust was impressed with the depth he saw from the Trojans in their scrimmage.

Coach Faust likes the potential he sees from his team and he has a lot of versatile players out there.

We’ll have coverage of the Trojans and the Rams on KJAN and KJANTV. Chris Parks and Mike Smith will have the call from Glenwood with pregame at 6:30 p.m. and kickoff at 7:00 p.m. Listen in for a full preview with Coach Brummer on Trojan Preview at 4:45 p.m. on Friday afternoon.
