Emgarten shines as Exira-EHK locks up RVC title with win over Woodbine

Sports

June 21st, 2022 by admin

The Exira-EHK Spartans softball team picked up a 3-1 win over Woodbine on Monday night and locked up the Rolling Valley Conference Championship. Macy Emgarten dazzled in the circle with 19 strikeouts, no walks, and just two hits and 1 run allowed. Emgarten said a lot was working in her favor.

The Spartans moved their RVC record 14-0 and grab the conference title. Spartans Head Coach Andrea Schwery loved the effort.

The Spartans used some timely bunched hitting early to get their three runs. Woodbine got a run on an outfielding error in the first but the Spartans quickly responded to tie in the bottom half of the inning. Shay Burmeister got aboard with a two out single and Mollie Rasmussen drove her in with a double as the next batter. Coach Schwery liked the resiliency.

The Spartans got RBI hits from Gemini Goodwin and Alisa Partridge in the 2nd to push the lead to 3-1 and that’s where it would stay.

The Spartans improved to 18-2 overall and the Tigers fall to 15-4. Exira-EHK will be back in action on Wednesday.at home against Glidden-Ralston.

Sports

June 20th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

Former Iowa star Micah Hyde says the Buffalo Bills are focused on taking the next step. The Bills are coming off two straight AFC East division titles but despite all the progress have come up short in the playoffs.

Hyde feels the signing of two time Super Bowl winner Von Miller at outside linebacker could be a difference maker.

Hyde says Miller’s championship history is a plus.

Iowa’s Payton Sandfort eyes larger role as sophomore

Sports

June 20th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

Iowa sophomore Payton Sandfort has experienced growth on the court and off. The Waukee native is coming off a freshman season in which he averaged just over five points per game and shot 37-percent from three point range. He is also approaching six feet, eight inches.

Sandfort’s role increased as the Hawkeyes made a second half run that included the Big Ten Tournament championship.

Sandfort was able to find a role even though he was part of a team loaded with veteran players.

Sandfort is working on areas this summer that will help him get an expanded role next season.
