Sports

November 23rd, 2022 by admin

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa senior linebacker Jack Campbell is one of five finalists for the Dick Butkus Award. The Butkus Foundation made the announcement Tuesday.

The 2022 Butkus Award winner will be announced the first week in DecemberCampbell was a semifinalist for the Butkus Award in 2021. He is joined as a finalist by Jamon Dumas-Johnson of Georgia, Davian Henley of Washington State, Ivan Pace, Jr. of Cincinnati and Drew Sanders of Arkansas.

Campbell (6-foot-5, 246-pounds) has led Iowa’s defense all season. He has totaled 110 tackles, leading the Big Ten and ranking 12th nationally. Campbell also has two interceptions, one recovered fumble and one caused fumble, along with 3.5 tackles for loss. He has 287 career tackles to rank 20th in program history.

Campbell, a Cedar Falls, Iowa native, led the defense in the final minutes of Iowa’s most recent win at Minnesota as the Hawkeyes won their eighth straight game with Floyd of Rosedale on the line. Campbell forced a Minnesota fumble inside the Iowa 10 with 5:07 left to play, which was recovered by teammate Deontae Craig.

On Minnesota’s next possession, Campbell intercepted a pass that was broken up by cornerback Riley Moss. Campbell returned his second interception of the season to the Minnesota 45 with 2:06 remaining. The Iowa offense turned the theft into a Drew Stevens game-winning field goal with 28 seconds to play. Campbell appeared to have a 75-yard return for a touchdown, but it was ruled that he stepped out of bounds at the 45.

For the game he recorded 10 tackles, including six solo stops, as the Hawkeye defense held the Gophers to 10 points.  Iowa’s defense has held eight opponents to 10 points or less in 11 games.

Campbell is also a finalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy. He was named a semifinalist for the Bednarik Award and Rotary Lombardi Award.

Iowa (7-4, 5-3) closes out the regular season Friday, hosting Nebraska (3-8, 2-6) in the battle for the Heroes Trophy (3:01 p.m. CT, BTN).

CAM opens the season with road win over AHSTW

Sports

November 23rd, 2022 by admin

The CAM girls basketball team picked up a road win over AHSTW 58-43 to open their season. The Cougars led most of the night but had to fight back from a run by the Lady Vikes to start the second half. CAM led 33-24 at the break but AHSTW opened the second half with an 11-0 run to grab a momentary lead. CAM responded by scoring the next 8 points in the period to seize control again. Some late forced turnovers and transition buckets helped the Cougars pull away.

CAM head coach Joe Wollum said it was a good game to start the season with.

The Cougars got some balanced scoring production with 12 each from Eva Steffensen and Kiera Nichols and 11 each from Meredith Rich and Reese Snyder. Bree Bower also added 7. Coach Wollum was happy they could produce as a group.

The Cougars were able to force 24 Lady Vike turnovers on the night and after a sloppy first half took better care of the ball themselves in the second.

CAM starts the season at 1-0 and will prepare to host Woodbine next Tuesday. AHSTW was led by 20 points from Delaney Goshorn and they start the season at 0-2. The Lady Vikes will head to Riverside next Tuesday.

Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz previews Nebraska

Sports

November 23rd, 2022 by Ric Hanson

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz says the Hawkeyes turned their season around by focusing on the game in front of them and that can’t change this week. The Hawkeyes host a Black Friday game against Nebraska and with a victory will make a second straight trip to the Big Ten Championship game.

The Hawkeyes were 3-4 and a humiliating loss at Ohio State but have won four straight.

Iowa will be without tight end Sam LaPorta and fullback Monte Pottebaum but Ferentz says both could return before the season is over.

Ferentz says the last two games are why turnovers are the most important stat in a football game. The Hawkeyes won despite being outgained.

Iowa State’s Matt Campbell previews No. 4 TCU

Sports

November 23rd, 2022 by Ric Hanson

Iowa State looks to play the role of spoiler this week with a visit to fourth ranked TCU. The Cyclones are 4-7 and visit a TCU team that is 11-0 after escaping with a last second win at Baylor.

That’s Iowa State coach Matt Campbell who says experience has helped the Horned Frogs in close games. Their last seven wins have been by 10 points or fewer.

Former Lewis Central standout Max Duggan quarterbacks a TCU team that is two wins away from a spot in the College Football Playoff.

Nebraska’s Mickey Joseph previews Iowa

Sports

November 23rd, 2022 by Ric Hanson

Nebraska interim coach Mickey Joseph expects the Huskers to be ready for Friday’s game at Iowa. Joseph took over for Scott Frost after a week three loss to Georgia Southern and the Huskers are 3-8.

Joseph says Iowa’s defense is consistently strong in part because the Hawkeyes don’t rely on the transfer portal.

Joseph hopes he will be considered for the permanent job.

Bobcat population doing well in Iowa

Ag/Outdoor, News, Sports

November 23rd, 2022 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – The Iowa bobcat trapping season is underway and D-N-R wildlife biologist, Vince Evelsizer, says trappers should be able to fill their quotas. “Bobcat populations are doing very well across the southern part of Iowa, the extreme western part of Iowa, and they’re continuing to expand northward up through eastern Iowa,” he says. Evelsizer says it’s one of the positive conservation stories. “The bobcats story is a happy one. Their numbers are stable to increasing in almost all counties of Iowa that have ideal habitat, which is typically early successional forest and in fields, natural grass fields, that sort of thing where there’s a good prey abundance,” Evelsizer says.

The limits on bobcat trapping continue based on the populations for each county. “The north-central part of Iowa is still closed to bobcat harvest. And then there’s several counties across central Iowa that are open to one bobcat bag limit for that county,” he says. “And then the three tiers of southern Iowa counties is open to a three bobcat bag limit.” Evelsizer says the trapping helps keep the populations from getting out of control.”They don’t have many natural predators in the Midwest which you know out in the western U-S — or the far north — they would have to watch out for bigger cats such as mountain lions or even gray wolves with their kittens you know that sort of thing,” Evelsizer says.

You can find out more about bobcat trapping on the Iowa D-N-R’s website.
