IRVING, Texas – Iowa State senior guard Jaren Holmes has been named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week for his performance last week at the Phil Knight Invitational.

Holmes helped Iowa State to a runner-up finish in the PKI Championship and was selected to the All-Tournament Team. He led the Cyclones in scoring on the week with 15.0 points per game, including 22 points in the win over No. 1 North Carolina. The senior guard averaged 31.7 minutes in the three games and scored double figures in each. Holmes also averaged 4.7 assists, 3.3 rebounds and 2.0 steals.

Iowa State returns to action on Wednesday against North Dakota. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at Hilton Coliseum. The game is available on Big 12 Now.

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Drake senior guard Megan Meyer earned the most recent installment of the MVC Player of the Week award, the league announced Monday.

The Preseason All-Conference honoree and reigning MVC Newcomer of the Year put together a career weekend at the FIU Thanksgiving Classic in Miami, Fla. The senior guard averaged 20.5 points, 4.5 assists, 3.0 rebounds, and a block over two non-conference matchups. In the Bulldogs’ first tilt, an overtime loss to Atlantic 10 Conference favorite UMass, Meyer poured in a career high 25 points on 9-of-16 shooting from the field and 7-of-13 shooting from three-point range. She followed the personal best performance with another 16 points in a 97-60 blowout of Howard.

Meyer and the Bulldogs will return to action this Thursday, Dec. 1 at the Knapp Center with another non-conference tilt against Lindenwood.

AMES, Iowa – If you were in the women’s college basketball world and did not know about Iowa State’s Stephanie Soares, you do now. After an outstanding pair of games at the Phil Knight Invitational, the Cyclone post has been named the Big 12 Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday.

This is Soares’ first Big 12 honor of her brief Iowa State career and marks the second-straight week the Cyclones have earned the nod for the league’s best player after Ashley Joens earned honors last Monday.

Against Michigan State on Thanksgiving Day, Soares exploded for 23 points (on 10-of-14 shooting), 11 rebounds and six blocked shots. Her effort marked the fourth time in program history that a player has finished with at least 20 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks in a game.

In the PKI final against then-No. 8 North Carolina, Soares finished with a double-double of 19 points and 12 rebounds, her third double-double of the season.

For the week, Soares led the Big 12 in points per game (21.0 ppg), rebounds per game (11.5 rpg) and blocked shots (4.0 bpg). In addition, she led efficiently, shooting 54.8 percent from the field.

Soares and the No. 8 Cyclones return to Hilton Coliseum tomorrow to take on SIUE. Tip between the Cyclones and Cougars will be at 6:30 p.m. on Big 12 Now. Tickets can be purchased through the Iowa State Athletics Ticket Office.

The Kansas City Chiefs had some red zone woes on Sunday afternoon but still came away with a 26-10 win over the Los Angeles Rams at Arrowhead Stadium. The Chiefs were just 1-6 in the red zone but Harrison Butker went 4 for 4 on field goal attempts and the Chiefs improved to 9-2.

Patrick Mahomes finished 27-42 for 320 yards, 1 touchdown, and 1 interception that came in the end zone. Isaiah Pacheco had 69 yards rushing with a touchdown and Travis Kelce hauled in the lone TD pass from Mahomes.

The Rams, playing with third string quarterback Bryce Perkins at the helm, managed just 198 yards of offense compared to 437 for the Chiefs. The defending Super Bowl champs drop to 3-8 on the season.

Next up for Kansas City is a trip to Cincinnati for a rematch of the 2021 AFC Championship game with the Bengals. We’ll have coverage on KJAN with pregame at 2:00 p.m. Sunday.

UConn jumped out to a 10 point halftime lead and the 20th ranked Huskies cruised to a 71-53 win over the Iowa State men in the championship of the Phil Knight Invitational, handing the Cyclones their first loss.

That’s Cyclone coach T.J. Otzelberger. UConn dominated the glass with a 48-19 rebounding advantage.

It was the first loss for the Cyclones who drop to 5-1.

Eighth ranked North Carolina opened the fourth quarter with a 14-0 run and raced by the fifth ranked Iowa State women 73-64 in the championship of the Phil Knight Invitation in Portland. It was a game the Cyclones led by 17 in the second quarter.

That’s ISU coach Bill Fennelly. The Cyclones shot only 36 percent and were limited to 29 second half points.

Stephanie Soares had 19 pints and 11 rebounds and Ashley Joens scored 18 points as the Cyclones fall to 5-1. They host Southern Illinois-Edwardsville on Tuesday night.

A disappointing season came to a humiliating conclusion as Iowa State lost at fourth ranked TCU 62-14. The Cyclones finish with a record of 4-8.

That’s ISU coach Matt Campbell. It’s the Cyclone’s worst season since a 3-9 record in 2016.

Improvement will start with an offense that was the lowest ranked in the Big-12 and the run game generated only 92 yards per game.
