Iowa teen says he was hit in head with footballs at Bedford H.S.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Authorities in Iowa are investigating allegations that high school students repeatedly hit one of their classmates in the head with footballs. The teenager and his grandmother filed a lawsuit last week saying the attack in October at Bedford High School in southwest Iowa resulted in severe brain injuries and permanent disabilities.

Iowa Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Jessica Lown said Tuesday that the agency has launched a criminal investigation. An agent will turn over information to a prosecutor, who will decide whether to file charges. The lawsuit filed Friday in federal court in Des Moines alleges that school administrators didn’t do enough to protect the boy from repeated bullying.

Bedford Community School District Superintendent Joe Drake, who is named in the lawsuit, told the Omaha World-Herald, investigators have informed him that there was no wrongdoing by students or staff. Drake says student safety is a priority and the school investigates all reports of bullying or harassment.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Iowa State University is asking the NCAA to put its athletics department on probation for 2 years as punishment for dozens of improper phone calls made by coaches and administrators between 2008 and 2011.

The university announced today (Tuesday), that it reported what it called inadvertent violations to the NCAA in the fall of 2011. The university says a review of 3 years of telephone and text messages discovered that non-coaching staff members made 55 impermissible phone calls while coaches made 24 improper calls during that timeframe.
Coaches also failed to document 1,405 calls in which they tried to connect with recruits but failed.

The university says coaches have served self-imposed sanctions for violations, including reducing the number of coaches recruiting and the calls they could make in a 4-month period.

The Iowa Hawkeyes bid for a spot in the NIT championship game this (Tuesday) evening when they take on Maryland in the second of two semifinal round games. This is the first time an Iowa team has played in New York’s Madison Square Garden for the NIT semifinals. Maryland is 25-12 and advanced to the semifinals after a one point victory at Alabama. The Terrapins have a standout center in seven-one sophomore Alex Len.

Junior guard Roy Devyn Marble has rebounded from a mid-season slump and is averaging just over 25 points per game during the NIT run. He is also connecting on 49 percent of his shots. Iowa Coach Fran McCaffery says the exposure the Hawkeyes have receiver during the tournament run has been good for the program.

Iowa is 24-12 and with a victory would play either Baylor or BYU in Thursday night’s NIT championship game. You can catch the Iowa versus Maryland game tonight, on KJAN. Pre-game coverage begins at 7-p.m., with the tip-off at 8.

April 1st, 2013 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Franchise left tackle Branden Albert was the only player absent as the Kansas City Chiefs gathered Monday for the start of voluntary offseason workouts. Albert would have become a free agent this offseason had he not received the franchise designation from the Chiefs. He signed the contract worth $9.82 million late last month.

The Chiefs mainly spent their first day of workouts in meetings, where coach Andy Reid laid out the groundwork for the offseason program and the coaching staff handed out playbooks, though several players said they already feel a more positive vibe at Arrowhead Stadium. Kansas City struggled to a 2-14 finish last season.

The Chiefs also announced they’ve re-signed reserve linebacker Edgar Jones and released linebacker Andy Studebaker, who contributed mostly on special teams.
