KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The San Francisco 49ers made their trade of quarterback Alex Smith to the Kansas City Chiefs official on Tuesday, nearly two weeks after the two sides agreed to it. The 49ers will receive the Chiefs’ second-round pick, 34th overall, and a conditional choice in next year’s draft, a person familiar with the terms told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the terms were not disclosed. Smith must still pass a physical for the trade to be completed.
The 28-year-old Smith struggled much of his career in San Francisco, but blossomed the past couple seasons under new coach Jim Harbaugh and is considered an upgrade for Kansas City. The Chiefs are expected to release incumbent quarterback Matt Cassel.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas State and Kansas tied for the regular-season Big 12 title, but that doesn’t mean they feel very good about themselves entering the league tournament.
The Wildcats lost a road game against Oklahoma State on Saturday, while the Jayhawks were routed by Baylor a few hours later in a game that would have given them the outright title.
Consider it proof that the Big 12 tournament should be unpredictable.
West Virginia and Texas Tech open Wednesday night at Sprint Center, with the winner advancing to play Kansas. The winner of Texas-TCU gets the Wildcats on Thursday.
The other two quarterfinals Thursday are Oklahoma-Iowa State and Oklahoma State-Baylor.
The tournament champion will be crowned Saturday night.
FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) — Tony Gonzalez is returning to the Falcons for the 2013 season.
Gonzalez, who led the Falcons with 93 catches last season, said on his Twitter feed Tuesday “I’m coming back.” The Falcons did not immediately reply to a request for comment.
Gonzalez, who said during the season he was 95-percent sure he would retire after the 2012 season, says he made the decision to play after talking with his family.
The 37-year-old Gonzalez had 93 catches for 930 yards and eight touchdowns last season.
The Falcons were 13-3 last season and advanced to the NFC championship game. Gonzalez could have become an unrestricted free agent Tuesday, but he says he wants to remain with the Falcons. He tweeted the Falcons’ “unbelievable fan support was too good to pass up.”

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Derek Jeter went 0 for 2 in his second game as a designated hitter since returning from a broken ankle, a 4-0 win for the New York Yankees over the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday. The Yankees captain was hurt Oct. 13 in the AL championship series opener. Jeter, who could play shortstop Wednesday, grounded out in the first and hit into a double play in the third. Hiroki Kuroda gave up three hits and struck out six in four innings. Kevin Youkilis hit a fourth-inning solo homer off St. Louis starter Lance Lynn, who allowed one run and two hits over four innings.
Cardinals manager Mike Matheny had surgery in St. Louis to repair a ruptured disk in his lower back. Bench coach Mike Aldrete is managing the team in his absence.
The Atlantic School District’s Board of Education Monday night approved by a vote of four-to-one, a proposed realignment of district administrative personnel beginning with the 2014 school year, in light of the announced resignation of Middle School Principal Cam Smith, which is effective at the end of the current school year. The change moves Atlantic High School Assistant Principal/Athletic Director Josh Rasmussen to Smith’s position. Matt Alexander, who is currently the Principal at the Schuler Elementary School, will become the Atlantic High School Assistant Principal and Athletic Director. The search will begin to find someone to fill Alexander’s position.
Board member Rod Hartwig was the only “No” vote on the matter. Prior to the vote, he questioned if anyone could effectively deal with the workload and discipline the AD position requires, on top of the Assistant Principal’s job. High School Principal Heather McKay said Rasmussen’s Assistant Principal’s job currently requires him to spend “very little” time on academic and disciplinary activities as compared to those which are related to athletics, which are very demanding.
In other business, the school board approved, by a vote of four-to-one a recommendation by Athletic Director Josh Rasmussen, to change the girls’ varsity and junior varsity sports team name from “Trojann’s” to “Trojans.” Board member Josh McLaren was the lone “No” vote. And, the Board approved the adding of one more day to the end of the school year, to make up for lost time due to snow days. The last day of school for students other than graduating Seniors, will be Wednesday, May 29th, barring any further lost days due to the weather.
DALLAS (AP) — Brittney Griner scored 31 points and top-ranked Baylor won its third consecutive Big 12 tournament championship, rolling past No. 23 Iowa State 75-47 Monday night. In a matchup of the Big 12’s top two seeds, the Lady Bears (32-1) and their 6-foot-8 senior star easily earned another trophy in their dominating run through the conference. Now the defending national champions can turn their attention toward the biggest prize.
Griner, already a two-time All-American, had 23 points by halftime, outscoring Iowa State by 10 on our own. Odyssey Sims added 20 points for Baylor. Anna Prins had 20 points for the Cyclones (23-8), who were playing in their first Big 12 title game since 2007.
Along with the last three Big 12 tournament titles, Baylor has gone undefeated through the league the last two regular seasons for a 49-game conference winning streak.
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny has had surgery to repair a ruptured disk in his lower back. Matheny had the procedure on Monday in St. Louis. Before leaving the team on Sunday, Matheny said he expected to be back at spring training for Thursday’s game against Atlanta in Jupiter. The 42-year-old Matheny, who replaced Tony La Russa as manager after the 2011 season, said early in spring training that the injury probably traces back to his days as a big league catcher from 1994-06.
Bench coach Mike Aldrete is managing the team in Matheny’s absence.
