Chiefs make sweeping move to keep 3 on roster

The Kansas City Chiefs retained three significant free agents Monday, signing punter Dustin Colquitt to a five-year deal, placing the franchise tag on left tackle Branden Albert and reportedly agreeing to a long-term contract with wide receiver Dwayne Bowe. The Chiefs had until Monday afternoon to decide whether to place the franchise tag on one of their pending free agents. They did it with Albert, who will make $9,828,000 next season. The decision was made easier by reaching long-term deals with Bowe and Colquitt.

Bowe was the recipient of the franchise tag last year, and despite poor quarterback play and some nagging injuries, still managed to catch 59 passes for 801 yards and three touchdowns. Colquitt earned a trip to the Pro Bowl as the Chiefs’ punter this season.

Lynn struggles with slider as Cards lose to Twins

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Lance Lynn allowed four hits in a three-run first inning and Jason Motte gave up a two-run homer in his second straight outing as the St. Louis Cardinals lost to the Minnesota Twins 7-0 Monday. Working on his slider instead of throwing fastballs and trying to induce fly balls into the wind, Lynn gave up three runs — two earned — and five hits in 2 1-3 innings.

Aaron Hicks and Brian Dozier started with singles, and Trevor Plouffe hit a sacrifice fly. Singles by Chris Parmalee and Joe Benson brought in another run, and Lynn threw wildly on Wilkin Ramirez’s grounder for an error that allowed the third run in.

Illinois faces Iowa team looking to build resume

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — During any other season, an early March matchup between the Big Ten’s sixth- and eighth-place teams might mean little. But not this season. When sixth-place Illinois (21-9, 8-8 Big Ten) heads to Iowa (18-11, 7-9), both know they could make it to the NCAA Tournament.

Illinois coach John Groce said Monday that Iowa will be a contrast to Illinois’ last opponent. The Hawkeyes can play 10 players, while Nebraska played just seven last Saturday at Illinois. The Illini won that game only after coming from behind after the Cornhuskers ran out of steam.

Groce said he hopes three of his younger players can build on strong games against Nebraska. Point guard Tracy Abrams, center Nnanna Egwu and forward Myke Henry were all key pieces in Illinois’ win.

Cards’ Furcal has elbow surgery setback, while Mgr. Mathey has a ruptered disc

VIERA, Fla. (AP) — Rafael Furcal had hoped to make his spring training debut Sunday. Instead, the 35-year-old shortstop was told to stop baseball activities. Trying to come back from a torn ligament in his right elbow, the three-time All-Star has been told he must have additional medical tests. With Furcal out indefinitely, Pete Kozma and Ronny Cedeno are the likely candidates to take over at shortstop unless there is a trade.

St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny has a ruptured disc in his back. Matheny, a major league catcher from 1994-06, is scheduled to have an epidural injection Monday to reduce inflammation and get a particle off a nerve. If the injection doesn’t help alleviate pain, he says surgery would “have to be something we would consider.” Starting his second season as the Cardinals’ manager, Matheny has had back issues for several years. He did not travel with the team to Kissimmee on Friday, citing back pain and food poisoning. He returned to manage the Cardinals on Saturday in Jupiter.

Nats’ Zimmerman hits RBI single in 2013 debut

VIERA, Fla. (AP) – Ryan Zimmerman went 1 for 3 with an RBI single in his first spring training game following shoulder surgery, helping the Washington Nationals defeat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-6 Sunday.  Zimmerman had arthrosopic surgery on his right shoulder on Oct. 25. An All-Star in 2009, Zimmerman hit .282 with 25 homers and 95 RBIs for NL East champions last season despite the injured shoulder, which needed cortisone shots in June and September. He was the designated hitter against the Cardinals rather than playing his usual third base.

Washington starter Ross Detwiler gave up one run and four hits in two scoreless innings and struck out four in his last appearance before joining the U.S. for the World Baseball Classic.  Chad Tracy hit a two-run homer and a double for Washington, and Zach Walters had a game-ending single off Eduardo Sanchez in the ninth.   Shane Robinson homered for St. Louis, and Pete Kozma had three hits.
