Chiefs’ Charles continues to break records

Sports

December 7th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jamaal Charles is about as difficult to catch in the locker room as he is in the open field, where he routinely makes defenders look foolish with his swiveling hips and world-class speed. But if you catch him for a moment, you’ll quickly learn why he’s among the best in the NFL: The pursuit of perfection drives him every day.

Charles enters the weekend third in the NFL and tops in the AFC with 1,011 yards rushing, and his 4.6 yards per carry is tied for seventh among those with at least 100 attempts. He also has nine TDs rushing, one behind league leader Adrian Peterson of the Vikings.

Hawkeyes, Cyclones headline Iowa doubleheader

Sports

December 7th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Cyclones and Hawkeyes are at the forefront of a college basketball resurgence in Iowa. Each have already earned Top 25 rankings and are drawing sellout crowds well ahead of conference play. They’ve also overshadowed a surprisingly strong start by Drake. The Bulldogs were picked to finish last in the Valley this season. But so far they’re 6-1 under first-year coach Ray Giacoletti.

Drake will get its chance to make a statement when it faces No. 23 Iowa (8-1) today (Saturday) at the Big 4 Classic in Des Moines. The second annual event replaced the old home-and-home scheduling arrangements between the Hawkeyes, Cyclones and their Missouri Valley rivals.

No. 17 Iowa State (6-0) kicks off the doubleheader against Northern Iowa (3-4).

Supreme Court upholds Iowa hunting laws

Ag/Outdoor, News, Sports

December 6th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – The Iowa Supreme Court has upheld Iowa’s hunting laws ruling that just because someone owns land in Iowa it doesn’t mean they have a right to hunt on it. The court finds that Iowa’s laws that provide hunting advantages to permanent residents do not violate the constitutional rights of nonresident landowners.  Three men who own land in Iowa but have permanent homes in other states challenged Iowa’s hunting laws as unconstitutional claiming they discriminate against nonresident landowners.

The court says Iowa lawmakers have developed an extensive statutory scheme that results in the conclusion “that landownership in Iowa is not accompanied by the right to hunt on one’s own land.”  The men objected to Iowa laws that make more licenses available to permanent residents at a lower price.

Nebraska to start selling bowl game tickets Monday

Sports

December 6th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska fans will be able to begin buying bowl game tickets Monday morning. The Huskers won’t find out what bowl they will play in until Sunday evening, but this year will be the 50th bowl appearance for Nebraska all-time. Only Texas and Alabama have more bowl appearances. Nebraska finished the regular season with an 8-4 record in the Big Ten Conference.

The Huskers appear most likely to receive an invitation to play in either the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl in Tempe, Ariz., or the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, Fla. Both those bowl games have ties to the Big Ten.
