Matheny is impressed with Peralta

Sports

December 11th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals hold their players to a high standard of conduct, and manager Mike Matheny is certain Jhonny Peralta will fit right in. The Cardinals’ new shortstop was suspended last summer along as part of Major League Baseball’s investigation into the Biogenesis clinic. Peralta served a 50-game drug suspension and returned to the Tigers at the end of the regular season.

Several players around the majors expressed anger when Peralta signed a $53 million, four-year contract with St. Louis in November. But Matheny sees a player who popular with his teammates and is working to make amends. “Been very proud just from the outside of him being part of our club now and watched how he’s handled this. He’s been very remorseful but taking it like a man. He made a mistake. This is what’s happened. Now I’d like to move on. And I get that,” Matheny said.

Hawkeye OL Scherff to Return for Senior Season

Sports

December 10th, 2013 by Jim Field

Iowa offensive lineman Brandon Scherff announced Monday that he plans to return for his senior season with the Hawkeyes.  Scherff made the announcement on Denison radio station KDSN and confirmed that on the Hawkeye Radio Network during last night’s basketball pre-game show heard on KJAN.  The 6-5, 315 pound left tackle was one of the big reasons Iowa was able to complete an 8-4 regular season and receive an Outback Bowl invitation.  Scherff was named a Big 10 first team all-conference member.  Many draft experts predicted Scherff as a possible first round pick in the NFL draft.

Chiefs find Redskins to be tonic for ills

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Chiefs snapped a three-game skid by dismantling the Washington Redskins over the weekend. It wasn’t just a blowout, either. It was 45-10, that rare lopsided outcome in the NFL in which a team can start playing its backups by the fourth quarter. It was the kind of game that can fill a team with confidence.

Now, Kansas City (10-3) can clinch a playoff berth by winning at Oakland (4-9) on Sunday, or if the Dolphins lose at home to New England or the Ravens lose at Detroit on Monday night.

No. 23 Iowa beats Fairleigh Dickinson 92-59

Sports

December 10th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — With an early start time, a late-arriving crowd and a huge rivalry game to look ahead to, No. 23 Iowa could have easily overlooked heavy underdog Fairleigh Dickinson. The Hawkeyes still had more than enough energy to put aside the Knights. Gabe Olaseni tied a career high with 14 points and had 10 rebounds as Iowa pulled away to a 92-59 victory Monday night, its 10th win of the season.

Melsahn Basabe had 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Hawkeyes (10-1), who broke the game open with an early 19-0 run and led by at least 20 points for the entire second half. Iowa got 51 points from its bench, which was led by Olaseni and Jarrod Uthoff, who had 10 points and 10 rebounds. Iowa outrebounded the Knights 54-32, including 30-13 in the first half, and cracked the 90-point plateau for the fourth time this season.

Mathias Seilund led Fairleigh Dickinson (3-9) with 19 points and Sidney Sanders had 16 — albeit on 5-of-20 shooting from the field. The Knights shot 32.3 percent overall (21 of 65).

Now Iowa can focus on one of its biggest non-conference game in years. Iowa will play its first true road game of the season Friday night at No. 17 Iowa State — the first ranked meeting between the instate rivals in 26 years.

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State placed two members of its football team on the All-Big 12 squad, announced today by the Associated Press.

Senior linebacker Jeremiah George was named first team and junior tight end E.J. Bibbs made the second team.

A native of Clearwater, Fla., George was the Big 12’s leading tackler in 2013, averaging 11.1 tackles per game to rank fourth nationally. In league games only, George ranked in the Big 12’s top-10 in tackles (1st- 11.8), forced fumbles (T4th- 3), tackles for loss (5th, 12.0) and sacks (T10th- 3.5).

George joins a list of outstanding linebackers under head coach Paul Rhoads who have earned First-Team All-Big 12 honors. Jesse Smith (2009), A.J. Klein (2011, 2012) and Jake Knott (2012) were also first-teamers.

Bibbs, a native of Chicago, Ill., recorded one of the finest seasons by a Cyclone tight end in school history in 2013. Bibbs caught 39 passes, ranking second in the Big 12 for tight ends and second all-time for tight ends in ISU history.

Bibbs ended the year with 462 receiving yards and was the only Cyclone with multiple catches in all 12 games.

The All-Big 12 Coaches team will be released on Wednesday.

Hogue, a forward from Yonkers, N.Y., started the week with career-highs of 22 points and 16 boards against the Tigers, recording the Big 12’s first 20-point, 15-rebound performance this season. He then followed with a 17-point, 14-rebound effort against UNI for his third double-double of the season.
