Iowa to play LSU in Outback Bowl

Sports

December 9th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

The Iowa Hawkeyes will play 15th ranked LSU in the Outback Bowl in Tampa on New Years Day. It will complete a bounce back year for a program that missed out on a bowl in 2012 with a 4-8 record. The Haweyes are 8-4, after finishing the regular season with three straight wins, and will take on an LSU team that is 9-3. It will be the second time Iowa and LSU have met in a bowl game.

Back in the 2005 Capitol One Bowl Drew Tate hit Warren Holloway with a 56 yard touchdown pass as time expired for a 30-25 Iowa win. The Tigers will be without senior quarterback Zach Mettenberger, who suffered a knee injury in the regular season finale but Hawkeyes Coach Kirk Ferentz says in the 2005 meeting the Tigers played three different quarterbacks.

Ferentz says it will be a great opportunity for the Hawkeyes. Iowa became the fourth choice out of the Big Ten and wins over Michigan and Nebraska the final two weeks moved the Hawkeyes up the pecking order. Iowa AD Gary Barta believes fans are anxious to travel to a bowl game after missing out last season. Iowa has always been an attractive bowl team because of the number of fans it brings but Barta says the difference this season were the results on the field.

This will be Iowa’s fourth trip to the Outback Bowl and the first one since a lopsided win over South Carolina in 2009.

December 9th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (AP) — UCLA linebacker Anthony Barr has won the Lott IMPACT Trophy as the collegiate defensive player having the biggest influence on his team. The other finalists were Chris Borland of Wisconsin, Devon Kennard of Southern California and James Morris of Iowa.

Barr, the first Bruin to win the 10th annual award, led UCLA with 20 tackles for losses. He also had 10 sacks, five forced fumbles, four fumbles recoveries and 62 total tackles. The award is named for Hall of Fame defensive back Ronnie Lott and goes to a player with strong academic work, community involvement and team leadership. UCLA will receive $25,000 for its general scholarship fund.

Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott was the speaker at Sunday night’s banquet at the Pacific Club in Newport Beach. Manti Te’o of Notre Dame won last year.

Chiefs thump Redskins 45-10 to break 3-game skid

Sports

December 8th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — The Kansas City scored early and often Sunday, breaking a three-game losing streak with a 45-10 embarrassment of the Washington Redskins. The Chiefs improved to 10-3 by dominating an opponent that offered little resistance. They scored on their first four possessions, sacked Robert Griffin III five times and Kirk Cousins once, and returned a punt and a kickoff for touchdowns.

The score was 17-0 after the first quarter and 38-10 at halftime. Quintin Demps immediately answered the lone Redskins touchdown with a 95-yard kickoff return, part of a stunning tally of 321 return yards by Kansas City in the first half alone. The Redskins fell to 3-10, increasing speculation that coach Mike Shanahan will be gone at the end of the season.
