Wong walkoff HR gives Cards 5-4 win over Pirates

Sports

July 8th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Rookie Kolten Wong gave the St. Louis Cardinals their second straight game-winning ninth-inning home run, connecting off Ernesto Frieri with two outs for a 5-4 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday night. Frieri (1-1) got two routine outs before Wong, batting eighth, hit his third homer on a full count.

The drive over the right-field wall, which was estimated at 420 feet, was the first game-winning homer of Wong’s career and it came a night after Matt Adams hit his first winner off Justin Wilson in a 2-0 victory. The Cardinals last had consecutive game-winning homers when Albert Pujols twice beat the Cubs on June 4 and 5, 2011.

Wong also gave the Cardinals the early lead with a two-run double in the second. Trevor Rosenthal (1-4) struck out Starling Marte on three pitches with two on to end the ninth.

Hawksworth cleared by IndyCar to race at Iowa

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Jack Hawksworth has been cleared by IndyCar to race at Iowa after sitting out Sunday’s event at Pocono with a heart contusion. The British driver was injured when he crashed in practice on Saturday. He was initially checked, cleared and released from the infield care center, but went to a Pennsylvania hospital later that day because he felt ill.

Hawksworth was diagnosed with a heart contusion and held overnight for observation. He was released Sunday and had to be seen by IndyCar medical director Dr. Michael Olinger for clearance to race. Hawksworth was cleared Tuesday to race this weekend at Iowa. The rookie has three top-10 finishes in IndyCar this season driving for BHA/BBM with Curb-Agajanian.

Cardinals’ Garcia to undergo thoracic surgery

Sports

July 8th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Cardinals left-hander Jaime Garcia will undergo thoracic outlet surgery Friday to relieve nerve issues in his pitching arm, shoulder and hand. General manager John Mozeliak said Tuesday that Garcia considered the operation his last viable option. The announcement was made on Garcia’s 28th birthday.

The Cardinals had already ruled Garcia out for the year and were initially surprised by the pitcher’s decision to have the procedure instead of exhausting other treatment options. Garcia is having the surgery done by Dr. Robert Thompson of St. Louis.

Garcia also consulted with Gregory Pearl, who did the same surgery on former teammate Chris Carpenter. The surgery wasn’t a long-term success from a baseball standpoint for Carpenter, who retired at age 38 after pitching just six more games.
