Chiefs QB Murray roots on bro on ‘Bachelorette’

Sports

June 19th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — While his buddies were bunking down to watch Jack Bauer on “24,” or cruising through channels in search of a ballgame, Aaron Murray was settling in for another episode of “The Bachelorette.” Yep, ABC’s reality dating show is must-see TV for the Chiefs’ rookie quarterback.

Murray isn’t your everyday fan. He has a rooting interest in bachelorette Andi Dorfman’s pursuit of love because his brother, former minor league baseball player Josh Murray, is one of the eight beaus still in the mix.

Aaron Murray says Monday nights are crazy as he and friends and family track his brother’s fortunes.

Mets’ Colon too much for Cardinals 3-2

Sports

June 18th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Bartolo Colon worked eight dominant innings in 91-degree heat and keyed the go-ahead rally with his first career extra-base hit, helping the New York Mets beat the St. Louis Cardinals 3-2 Wednesday to avoid a three-game sweep.

Eric Young and David Wright had an RBI apiece in a two-run sixth that put the Mets up by a run, and Young added an RBI double off Seth Maness in the seventh – a run aided by Colon’s second sacrifice of the game. Matt Carpenter hit his third career leadoff homer for the Cardinals.

Colon (7-5) surprised Lance Lynn (7-5) with a double to open the sixth. He scored his second career run, and first since 2002, when Young doubled. Dana Eveland got the last out for his second career save.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – Daniel Pinero’s sacrifice fly scored Thomas Woodruff in the bottom of the 15th inning to give Virginia a 3-2 victory Tuesday night in a game that matched the longest in the College World Series’ 66-year history. Pinero fouled off two squeeze-bunt attempts against Trey Teakell before he lofted a fly to center. Cody Jones’ throw toward home never had a chance. The Cavaliers’ bench and bullpen emptied, with everybody mobbing Pinero near second base.

Virginia (51-14), which had a walk-off win against Mississippi on Sunday in nine innings, plays Friday in its bracket final. TCU (48-17) plays Ole Miss in an elimination game Thursday. Artie Lewicki (8-1) got the win and Teakell (6-1) took the loss.

It was the longest game, as measured by innings, since Southern California beat Florida State 2-1 in 15 in the 1970 national championship game.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – Pinch hitter John Gatlin’s single into short right field over a pulled-in, five-man infield in the bottom of the ninth inning gave Mississippi a 2-1 victory over Texas Tech in a College World Series elimination game Tuesday. The exciting finish came after Texas Tech had tied it in the top of the ninth. The Red Raiders (45-20) went 0-2 in their first CWS.

Ole Miss won after Colby Bortles walked with one out. Brantley Bell hit a comebacker to Cameron Smith, who tried to force out Bortles at second. But he threw high into center field, allowing Bortles to go to third.

Dominic Moreno came on to face Gatlin, with Texas Tech shifting an extra player to the left side of the infield and going with only two outfielders. Gatlin punched a 1-2 pitch over second base, and the celebration was on.
