Sports

June 20th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Ryan Howard homered and drove in three runs and rookie David Buchanan pitched into the eighth inning Thursday night, sparking the Philadelphia Phillies to a 4-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. Howard, a St. Louis native, has hit safely in 22 of 27 regular season games at Busch Stadium. He has 38 RBIs in St. Louis and a .374 batting average.

Howard also has been hot on the road. In his last 15 games away from Philadelphia, he is hitting .350 with three homers and 14 RBIs. Buchanan made his deepest start yet, pitching 7 2-3 innings. He threw 105 pitches and kept the Cardinals off balance and off the scoreboard until the eighth. Buchanan allowed four hits and a walk while striking out four.

Jonathan Papelbon pitched the ninth to pick up 17th save in 19 opportunities. Shelby Miller gave up seven hits and three walks in 6 2-3 innings.

Christofferson Among Nominees For NCAA Woman Of The Year

Sports

June 19th, 2014 by Jim Field

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State women’s basketball’s Hallie Christofferson was recently nominated for the 2014 NCAA Woman of the Year.

Christofferson is one of 446 female student-athletes nominated for the award across all NCAA sports and divisions, and is one of 71 women’s basketball players.

The Woman of the Year award honors graduating female student-athletes who have distinguished themselves throughout their collegiate careers in academics, athletics, service and leadership.

Christofferson recently wrapped up her final season with the Cyclones, finishing sixth all-time in scoring (1,709) and eighth all-time in rebounds (762). The forward from Hamlin, Iowa, led the team in scoring for the second-consecutive year with 18.4 points per game. She also averaged 7.2 rebounds while shooting 46.1 percent from the field en route to her second-consecutive All-American campaign.

Each conference then selects up to two women from the nominees to represent the conference. The Woman of the Year selection committee selects the top 30 honorees – 10 from each division – from the conference nominees.

From among those 30 candidates, the selection committee determines the top three in each division and announces the top nine finalists in September. The NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics will then vote from among the finalists to determine the 2014 NCAA Woman of the Year.

The top 30 honorees will be honored, and the 2014 NCAA Woman of the Year winner will be announced, at the annual ceremony in Indianapolis on Sunday, Oct. 19.

Chiefs QB Murray roots on bro on ‘Bachelorette’

Sports

June 19th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — While his buddies were bunking down to watch Jack Bauer on “24,” or cruising through channels in search of a ballgame, Aaron Murray was settling in for another episode of “The Bachelorette.” Yep, ABC’s reality dating show is must-see TV for the Chiefs’ rookie quarterback.

Murray isn’t your everyday fan. He has a rooting interest in bachelorette Andi Dorfman’s pursuit of love because his brother, former minor league baseball player Josh Murray, is one of the eight beaus still in the mix.

Aaron Murray says Monday nights are crazy as he and friends and family track his brother’s fortunes.

Mets’ Colon too much for Cardinals 3-2

Sports

June 18th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Bartolo Colon worked eight dominant innings in 91-degree heat and keyed the go-ahead rally with his first career extra-base hit, helping the New York Mets beat the St. Louis Cardinals 3-2 Wednesday to avoid a three-game sweep.

Eric Young and David Wright had an RBI apiece in a two-run sixth that put the Mets up by a run, and Young added an RBI double off Seth Maness in the seventh – a run aided by Colon’s second sacrifice of the game. Matt Carpenter hit his third career leadoff homer for the Cardinals.

Colon (7-5) surprised Lance Lynn (7-5) with a double to open the sixth. He scored his second career run, and first since 2002, when Young doubled. Dana Eveland got the last out for his second career save.
