Iowa rallies, knocks off unbeaten Pitt 24-20

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Mark Weisman ran for 88 yards and two touchdowns, including a 1-yard plunge with 6:56 remaining as Iowa rallied for a 24-20 win over Pittsburgh on Saturday. The Hawkeyes (3-1) trailed by 10 at the half but surged when C.J. Beathard replaced starting quarterback Jake Rudock in the third quarter.

Beathard hit Damond Powell for a 62-yard gain to jumpstart the comeback and Weisman followed with a 10-yard sprint into the end zone for his first score. His second score gave the Hawkeyes their first lead.

James Conner rushed for 155 yards and a touchdown but was held in check during the second half as the Panthers (3-1) failed to improve to 4-0 for the first time since 2000. Chad Voytik passed for a career-high 250 yards but Pitt’s last-gasp drive ended with an interception.

Chiefs’ Charles questionable to play vs Dolphins

Sports

September 20th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Jamaal Charles practiced in a limited capacity for the second straight day, raising hopes that the Chiefs’ Pro Bowl running back will be available for Sunday’s game in Miami. Charles sustained a high ankle sprain in last week’s loss to Denver.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said that Charles, who did not practice Wednesday, looked a little bit sore but did “OK” in the workout. Reid said that Charles’ ankle loosened up as practice went along and “we’ll just see how he does.”

If Charles is unable to go, Knile Davis would get the majority of carries for Kansas City.

Cardinals beat Reds 2-1, stay 2 1-2 up in Central

ST. LOUIS (AP) — John Lackey powered back into the St. Louis postseason rotation picture with 7 2-3 dominant innings, and Randal Grichuk and Matt Holliday hit consecutive homers in the first inning of the Cardinals’ 2-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Friday night.

The NL Central leaders had only five hits but maintained a 2 1-2-game lead over the Pittsburgh Pirates with eight games remaining. Their magic number is seven for clinching a second straight division title and two over third-place Milwaukee for securing a fourth straight postseason berth. St. Louis is 6-1 on its final nine-game homestand.

Lackey (14-9) was passed over in the just-completed three-game series against Milwaukee after complaining of a dead arm. The 35-year-old right-hander arrived at the trade deadline with a big-game reputation but was 2-2 with a 5.05 ERA in his first eight starts.

Panthers, Hawkeyes looking for legitimacy

Sports

September 19th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh searches for its first 4-0 start since 2000 when the Panthers host Iowa on Saturday. The Panthers are coming off a 42-25 win at lowly Florida International that included a rally from an early 16-point deficit. Pitt coach Paul Chryst praised his team’s ability to bounce back, but added the Panthers can’t be so sloppy early on against the Hawkeyes (2-1).

Iowa blew an early 11-point lead in a loss to Iowa State last week. The Hawkeyes are averaging a modest 21 points a game, 102nd in the country. Coach Kirk Ferentz says he hasn’t lost patience with his offense, pointing out his team has narrowly missed a handful of big plays that could have changed the complexion of the game.

Adair-Casey @ Coon Rapids-Bayard Live Tonight on KJAN!

Sports

September 19th, 2014 by Jim Field

We have an 8-Man football game tonight on KJAN as 2-1 Adair-Casey will hit the road to visit 8th ranked Coon Rapids-Bayard. Coon Rapids-Bayard coach John Kesselring helped lead Adair-Casey to a state title as a quarterback when he was a player, but now he has to coach against his alma mater.

Kesselring says he is impressed by the Bombers speed.

Adair-Casey coach Chris Bireline was Kesselring’s high school teammate. Bireline says running back Zach Evans is his main concern when scouting the Crusaders.

Evans has run for 600 yards in the first three games and leads a potent ground attack for 3-0 Coon Rapids-Bayard.

Our pre-game show begins at 6:30 this evening with kick-off set for 7:00. You can hear it live on AM 1220, FM 101.1, online at kjan.com or on your smartphone with the free KJAN app. You can also watch the live video stream of the game on the TV page at kjan.com.

“Who’s Gonna Win?” will get our evening of high school football coverage started at 6:00 tonight.

Atlantic Tries to Make it Three in a Row vs. ADM

Sports

September 19th, 2014 by Jim Field

Coming off a 7-6 win over Glenwood to open district play last week, the Atlantic football team is home to try to extend their winning streak to three games tonight as they host ADM.

The Trojans haven’t been able to muster a lot of offense so far this season, but the defense has come up big in the last two wins. Last week, the Trojans stopped the Rams twice on the one yard line, with one of those stops turning into a 99 yard, 22 play, nine-plus minute drive for the winning touchdown.

After facing three teams that predominantly run the ball, Trojans Head Coach Eric Waldstein says his team will face a 1-2 Tigers club that likes to throw the ball…..a lot!

Last week, ADM lost a 7-6 match-up with Dallas Center-Grimes that saw the Tigers throw four interceptions. Waldstein hopes his Trojan squad can cause the same type of turnover problems.

Kick-off tonight at the Trojan Bowl is set for 7:30.

You can hear more from Coach Waldstein this afternoon at 4:45 on “Trojan Preview.”
