DENVER (AP) — Terrance Knighton batted away Alex Smith’s fourth-and-goal pass to Dwayne Bowe with 15 seconds left, preserving the Denver Broncos’ 24-17 win over the scrappy Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. The Broncos thought they had sealed the win twice earlier on the drive. Aqib Talib’s pick-6 was negated by Quanterus Smith’s hold. Then, Nate Irving’s fumble recovery following DeMarcus Ware’s sack and strip was ruled an incomplete pass after a replay.

The Chiefs converted 11 of 16 third-down opportunities overall. They just couldn’t capitalize in the biggest moments as the Broncos defense mustered two goal-line stands for the second straight week. Peyton Manning was 21 of 26 for 242 yards and three TDs.

DENVER (AP) — Broncos special teams ace David Bruton was among Denver’s inactives against Kansas City. Bruton separated his left shoulder in the opener last week. He returned to practice Thursday but only on a limited basis.

Other inactives for the Broncos were WR Cody Latimer, CB Tony Carter, LB Danny Trevathan, guard Ben Garland and tackle Michael Schofield. The Broncos only had six inactives because they only have 52 players on their roster.

Kansas City’s inactives were QB Aaron Murray, WRs Albert Wilson and De’Anthony Thomas, RB Joe McKnight, OL Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, CB Jamell Fleming and DE Damion Square. Ryan Harris started at right tackle for Jeff Allen, one of three Chiefs lost for the season in their loss to Tennessee in the opener.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Rookie Marco Gonzales struck out nine, Jhonny Peralta homered and the NL Central-leading St. Louis Cardinals beat the Colorado Rockies 4-1 Sunday for their third straight win. The Cardinals held their 3 1-2-game division lead over Pittsburgh. Colorado lost all six games on its just-completed road trip.

Gonzales, in his fifth major league start, gave up one run on four hits and four walks over 5 2-3 innings. His strikeout total was the most by a Cardinals rookie left-hander since Rick Ankiel fanned 11 in 2000 against Pittsburgh.

Trevor Rosenthal struck out the side in the ninth to pick up his NL-leading 44th save in 49 opportunities. Six St. Louis pitchers combined to fan 16. Peralta hit his team-leading 21st homer, a two-run shot in the third off Jordan Lyles.

The City of Atlantic’s Parks and Recreation Department Board of Director will meet Monday evening, in the Council’s Chambers at City Hall. During the 5:15-p.m. session, Parks and Rec Director Roger Herring will report on the Summer Rec Program, including slow pitch softball and the status of pool repairs as well as future pool maintenance.

Herring will also talk about progress on the Senior Activity Area at Sunnyside Park. The recent wet weather has slowed progress on some projects in that area. Herring is expected to inform the Board a retaining wall is still being constructed. Once completed, the park’s staff will place topsoil down along with seed, with final grading to finish the project.

The Atlantic Parks and Rec Board will also receive an update on the Boy Scout Cabin and the Eagle Scout fire pit project at Sunnyside, which Herring says is nearly complete. Herring will also provide a wrap on the Disc Golf Tournament, which was held Aug. 30th and 31st, and drew participants from five states. He’s also expected to note that mowing and the Senior Activity Area retaining wall have dominated the park department’s schedule over the past month.

DENVER (AP) – Kansas City Chiefs All-Pro running back Jamaal Charles has left the game with a left ankle injury after being brought down in the first quarter Sunday against the Denver Broncos. His return was questionable. Charles was stopped on a run up the middle by Broncos safety T.J. Ward and then hobbled to the bench. Charles was examined by the Chiefs medical staff as Knile Davis replaced him in the backfield.

Kansas City was trying to get Charles more involved in the offense this week after giving him just seven carries against Tennessee. Charles rushed for 1,287 yards a season ago, which was third-most in the NFL. The Chiefs are already missing Pro Bowl linebacker Derrick Johnson and defensive tackle Mike DeVito as both ruptured their right Achilles tendons last weekend.

HONOLULU (AP) – Steven Lakalaka rushed for a career-high 124 yards and a touchdown as Hawaii beat Northern Iowa 27-24 Saturday. The Rainbow Warriors (1-2) rushed for 148 yards against the Panthers (0-2) and also saw their defense and special teams put points on the board.

Defensive lineman Beau Yap opened the scoring by recovering a UNI fumble in the end zone and Tyler Hadden had a field goal in each half. Lakalaka shouldered the load with standout Joey Iosefa out with a fractured ankle suffered in a loss to Oregon State last week. Lakalaka averaged 3.9 yards on a career-high 32 carries and scored on a 30-yard run late in the third quarter. His previous career-best was a 104-yard performance on 19 carries against Army last year.

Quarterback Ikaika Woolsey threw for 188 yards on 14-of-30 passing, including a 15-yard touchdown to Harold Moleni in the second quarter.

MAYCOMB, Ill. (AP) — Trenton Norvell accounted for two touchdowns to lead Western Illinois to a 38-13 victory over Drake Saturday. Norvell completed his first five pass attempts, then rushed for a 7-yard touchdown on Western Illinois’ opening drive. He threw a 71-yard touchdown pass to Quadarias Mireles in the fourth quarter to cap the scoring for the Leathernecks.

Norvell was 15 of 22 for 205 yards and J.C. Baker ran for 130 yards on 20 carries to lead Western Illinois (2-1). Cody Thibault came off the bench and threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Michael Hudson and Ben Tesson kicked a 43-yard field goal to pull Drake (1-2) within 14-10 at the half.

David McDaniel blocked a Cam Bohnert punt and Brad Blumenshine returned it 27 yards for a touchdown to give Western Illinois a 28-10 lead in the third quarter.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Matt Holliday homered in the first inning for the second straight night and Shelby Miller pitched six solid innings and had an RBI double, leading the St. Louis Cardinals to a 5-4 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Saturday night.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Cole Netten hit a 42-yard field goal with two seconds left and Iowa State rallied to beat Iowa 20-17 on Saturday, picking up its first win of the season. Sam Richardson had 255 yards passing and 2 TDs for the Cyclones (1-2), who beat the rival Hawkeyes (2-1) for the third time in four tries.

Iowa State took a 17-14 lead with 7:33 left on Richardson’s 27-yard TD pass to DeVondrick Nealy. Iowa answered with Marshall Koehn’s 44-yard field goal with 4:08 to go. Netten appeared to miss his first try at the game-winner, but Iowa had already called a timeout. Netten’s second attempt went straight through the uprights.

Jake Rudock threw for 146 yards and an interception for Iowa, which was held to just three points after halftime.
