Sports

September 7th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jake Locker threw for 266 yards and two touchdowns, Alex Smith was intercepted three times and the Tennessee Titans rolled to a 26-10 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. Locker picked apart a Chiefs defense that lost linebacker Derrick Johnson and defensive tackle Mike DeVito to Achilles injuries. Locker was 22 of 33 and found eight different players, including former Chiefs wide receiver Dexter McCluster.

Kendall Wright and Delanie Walker had TD catches for the Titans, and Ryan Succop was perfect on four field-goal attempts against the team that released him last weekend. Smith was 19 of 35 for 202 yards and a touchdown for a Chiefs offense missing suspended wide receiver Dwayne Bowe and right tackle Donald Stephenson.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Pro Bowl linebacker Derrick Johnson was carted off the field with an apparent leg injury late in the first half of the Kansas City Chiefs’ game against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday. Johnson, who is nearing Gary Spani’s franchise record for career tackles, fell in a heap in the middle of the field without anybody touching him. The nature of the injury was unclear, but it appeared that trainers were examining his Achilles tendon. The Chiefs have already lost fellow linebacker Joe Mays to a broken wrist.

Earlier in the game, Chiefs right tackle Jeff Allen appeared to hurt his right arm. He was already replacing the suspended Donald Stephenson. Allen was replaced in the lineup by Ryan Harris. Titans linebacker Zach Brown left with a shoulder injury.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs were missing three starters for their season opener against the Tennessee Titans after cornerback Marcus Cooper was declared inactive for Sunday’s game at Arrowhead Stadium. Cooper missed practice time this week with an ankle injury. Ron Parker took his place. The Chiefs were already missing wide receiver Dwayne Bowe and right tackle Donald Stephenson. Bowe is suspended for the opener following an arrest last November, and Stephenson will be out the first four games for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing drug policy.

Also inactive for Kansas City were quarterback Aaron Murray, wide receiver De’Anthony Thomas, safety Kurt Coleman, center Eric Kush, offensive tackle Laurent Duvernay-Tardif and defensive end Damion Square. Quarterback Zach Mettenberg was inactive for Tennessee, along with wide receivers T.J. Graham and Kris Durham, defensive linemen Mike Martin and DaQuan Jones, linebacker Akeem Ayers and offensive tackle Byron Stingily.

The Brewers have lost 10 of 11. Ryan Braun had an RBI single in the first, and Lyle Overbay doubled home a run in the sixth. Milwaukee right-hander Kyle Lohse (12-9) lasted just four innings. He allowed five runs and four hits with two walks.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – A 2-yard touchdown run by Conley Wilkins in overtime gave Drake a 13-7 win over Truman State on Saturday. Wilkins carried the ball on five of six plays during the winning drive, which was highlighted by a 17-yard pass from Andy Rice to Eric Saubert to the Truman State three-yard line. Wilkins had 88 yards rushing and Rice added 151 through the air with a touchdown to lead Drake (1-1) offensively.

Benjamin Tesson missed a 37-yard field goal as time expired that would have given Drake the victory in regulation. An 11-yard touchdown catch by Saubert gave Drake a 7-0 lead in the first. Quarterback Devonte Black answered later in the quarter with 1-yard TD run for Truman State, who were playing their first game of the season.

Black also threw for 148 yards on 17 of 31 passing.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa’s Jake Duzey caught a go-ahead 12-yard touchdown pass from Jake Rudock with a minute left in a 17-13 win over Ball State on Saturday. Rudock threw for 322 yards and completed 9 of 11 passes on the Hawkeyes’ two scoring drives in the final 6 minutes. Iowa (2-0) forced a fumble on Ball State’s final possession to end the game. Ball State (1-1) turned two fumbles into 10 points, but the Cardinals couldn’t get a stop late. The Hawkeyes racked up 455 yards and 27 first downs.

Iowa broke through with a 12-yard touchdown pass from Rudock to Derek Willies with 3 minutes left to cap a 90-yard drive and cut Ball State’s lead to 13-10. After the Hawkeyes forced a punt, Rudock marched Iowa downfield again and connected with his tight end Duzey for the game-winning score.

Blake Dueitt returned a fumble 35 yards for Ball State’s touchdown.

AMES, Iowa (AP) – Jake Waters ran for an 8-yard touchdown with 1:30 left and 20th-ranked Kansas State rallied past host Iowa State 32-28 on Saturday.  Waters threw for 239 yards and ran for a career-high 138 yards for the Wildcats (2-0, 1-0 Big 12). They trailed by as much as 28-13 late in the first half before Waters rescued them on a game-winning drive.

Jarvis West caught and threw touchdown passes and ran a punt back for a third TD for Iowa State (0-2, 0-1), which was held scoreless in the second half.

September 6th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Those wanting their own Herky statue can head to Iowa City next week for the 2014 Herky on Parade live auction. Herky, the hawk, is the mascot of the Iowa Hawkeyes. The first parade was held in 2004, when about 30 variations of the 6-foot fiberglass statues were displayed as part of the Herky on Parade public art project, which helped celebrate Kinnick Stadium’s 75th anniversary.

The Iowa City Press-Citizen reports that this year’s auction will be held Friday at the Englert Theatre in Iowa City. Doors open and bidder registration begins at 5 p.m. Tickets to the event are $5. All proceeds benefit the United Way of Johnson and Washington counties.

Cards Fall to Brewers Friday

Sports

September 5th, 2014 by admin

MILWAUKEE (AP) – Scooter Gennett drove in three runs and Mike Fiers pitched into the seventh inning to lead Milwaukee past St. Louis 6-2 Friday night, snapping the Brewers’ nine-game losing streak and trimming the Cardinals’ lead in the NL Central to three games.

Fiers (5-2) gave up two runs and seven hits in 6 2-3 innings, improving to 5-1 in six starts since being called up from Triple-A Nashville on Aug. 9.

Cardinals starter John Lackey (2-2) gave up all six runs and nine hits in six innings as St. Louis snapped a six-game winning streak.

Gennett had a two-run single in the third and an RBI double in the fifth, and Lucroy added a run-scoring single to put the Brewers up 4-0.

Jhonny Peralta’s 19th homer got St. Louis on the board in the sixth, but Khris Davis’ two-run shot in the bottom of the inning made it 6-1.

Rain Impacts Parking Conditions Around Jack Trice Stadium

Sports

September 5th, 2014 by Jim Field

AMES, Iowa – With saturated conditions and, potentially more rain in the forecast, Iowa State University officials are again asking for patience and understanding from individuals attending Saturday’s football game against Kansas State.

“Fans should plan to arrive early for Saturday’s 11 a.m. kickoff because wet conditions may affect the areas around Jack Trice Stadium,” Director of Athletics Jamie Pollard. “We will try to park as many vehicles as possible, but conditions could limit access to portions of the grass lots. We thank fans, in advance, for their cooperation.”

Here are some key points regarding parking:

• There will definitely be no RV or bus parking in the public grass lots (G2, G3, G4, G5, G8 or Veterinary Medicine). There are spaces on campus – north of Molecular Biology – available for fans who need to park a bus or RV.

• Based upon current conditions, Iowa State officials anticipate having to close public grass lots (G2, G3, G4, G5 or G8) south of the stadium. Should conditions improve overnight, portions of those lots could be opened for automobiles Saturday morning.

• Individuals, who normally park in those lots, are encouraged to consider spaces in campus lots (click here and select the “parking lot” layer for a campus map; the red, yellow or blue lots will be available at no charge for fans).

• There will be no public parking in the grassy areas near Hilton Coliseum Saturday. Those lots are being held for overflow handicapped parking and overflow donor parking (from Lot G7 should part of that area become unusable).

The best places to seek parking if your normal area is closed are various campus lots (click here and select the “parking lot” layer; use the red, yellow or blue lots).

Because the parking lot conditions can change, fans should check Cyclones.com (click here for the Gameday Central link) or the department’s various social media channels (Facebook and Twitter) for the latest information.
