JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals have picked Carlos Martinez as their fifth starter and put pitcher Jaime Garcia on the 15-day disabled list. Cardinals manager Mike Matheny made the announcement about the rotation on Monday. Martinez, Garcia and Marco Gonzales had been competing for the final starting spot.
The 23-year-old Martinez went 2-4 with a 4.03 ERA in 57 games for the NL Central champions last year. The right-hander made seven starts. Adam Wainwright, Lance Lynn, John Lackey and Michael Wacha are the other starters for the Cardinals.
Garcia is sidelined because of soreness in his surgically repaired left shoulder.
JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Washington Nationals closer Drew Storen exited early because of a blister on his right big toe Monday in a 6-2 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. Storen issued a two-out walk to Kolten Wong, then left the mound in the sixth inning. The setback is the second of the spring for the right-handed Storen, who missed time after undergoing surgery to remove part of a bone in his left hand.
After the game Nationals manager Matt Williams said there is no timetable for Storen’s return, a fact made more troublesome by the news that an MRI exam of reliever Casey Janssen’s shoulder showed rotator cuff tendinitis. Janssen is expected to be Washington’s primary setup man.
The injury report from Washington’s position players isn’t any more encouraging. Anthony Rendon was scheduled to see Dr. James Andrews for an exam on his ailing left knee.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Willie Cauley-Stein of Kentucky, Frank Kaminsky of Wisconsin and Jahlil Okafor of Duke are among the 10 candidates for the John R. Wooden Award as the nation’s top college basketball player. The trio, who are all participating in this week’s Final Four, along with Jerian Grant of Notre Dame and D’Angelo Russell of Ohio State have been invited to Los Angeles, where the winner will be announced by the Los Angeles Athletic Club on April 10.
The other finalists announced Monday are Ron Baker of Wichita State, Malcolm Brogdon of Virginia, Seth Tuttle of Northern Iowa, Kyle Wiltjer of Gonzaga and Delon Wright of Utah.
They were selected by a panel of nearly 1,000 national college basketball media and the award’s former winners. Voting was from March 16-23 and included the opening rounds of the NCAA Tournament.
The finalists for the women’s Wooden Award are Nina Davis of Baylor, Jewell Loyd of Notre Dame, Tiffany Mitchell of South Carolina, and Connecticut teammates Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis and Breanna Stewart, who finished third in last year’s voting.
The Legends of Coaching Award will be presented to Steve Fisher of San Diego State on the same night.
JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals have told reliever Carlos Villanueva he will be on their 25-man opening-day roster.
“We talked to him about him being a part of our club, so today was a good morning for him,” manager Mike Matheny said Monday.
The 31-year-old right-hander agreed to a minor league contract in February and had the right to request his release if not added to the roster by Monday. He will get a $2 million, one-year contract and the chance to earn $500,000 in performance bonuses: $250,000 each for three and six starts.
Under baseball’s collective bargaining agreement, St. Louis had until Tuesday to give Villaneuva written notice he would be on the opening-day roster, pay $100,000 retention bonus or release him.
AMES, Iowa – Iowa State junior Georges Niang has been named a National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-America Third-Team selection, as voted on by member coaches of the NABC.
Niang, a Methuen, Massachusetts, native is the fourth Cyclone to earn All-America honors in five years under the direction of Fred Hoiberg.
One of the best all-around players in the nation, Niang averaged 15.3 points, 5.4 rebounds and 3.4 assists in his junior campaign. He earned All-Big 12 First-Team honors and was the league’s most outstanding player at the Big 12 Championship.
Niang scored in double-figures 28 times this season, including eight games with 20 or more points. He has 1,510 points in his career, which ranks 15th all-time at Iowa State.
JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Dillon Gee allowed singles to four of his first five batters, then settled in to pitch seven innings Sunday in the New York Mets’ 3-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. Matt Carpenter and Jason Heyward opened the first with singles, but left fielder Michael Cuddyer threw out Carpenter at third. Matt Holliday singled, and the Cardinals pulled off a double steal, and shortstop Ruben Tejada turned Matt Adams’ liner into an unassisted double play.
Jhonny Peralte singled leading off the second, and Yadier Molina grounded into a 1-6-3 double play. Gee wound up allowing two runs and seven hits. Heyward hit an RBI triple in the third and scored on Holliday’s sacrifice fly. Lucas Duda had three hits, and Curtis Granderson had two hits and a walk.
Cardinals starter Marco Gonzales, pitching because Jaime Garcia’s shoulder is ailing, gave up one run, three hits and three walks in 4 2-3 innings.
LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) — Miguel Cabrera hit his second home run of the spring and raised his average to .385, leading the Detroit Tigers past the St. Louis Cardinals 4-3 Saturday. Cabrera was playing in his sixth game of the spring while recovering from offseason surgery on his right ankle. It was his sixth straight game of the spring, and he will sit out Sunday against Philadelphia.
Shane Greene, acquired during the offseason from the New York Yankees, allowed three runs in five innings for the Tigers. He also walked three while striking out six. Lance Lynn started his third game of the spring for the Cardinals and allowed six hits and two runs in five innings. He walked none and struck out five. Alex Avila homered for the Tigers.
SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) – The pitching-depleted Texas Rangers acquired left-hander Sam Freeman from the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday for a player to be named or cash considerations. The 27-year-old Freeman was 2-0 with a 2.61 ERA in a career-high 44 relief appearances last season with the Cardinals. He pitched once against the Dodgers in the playoffs.
Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said he expects Freeman, who is out of minor league options, to make the opening day roster. “He’s got a good arm and the acquisition price was right,” Daniels said. “We’ll bring him in here and give him an opportunity.” The Texas pitching staff has been beset by health problems in spring training, including a season-ending injury to ace Yu Darvish.
