McCool coaches pitching clinic in Atlantic recently

Sports

April 1st, 2015 by Ric Hanson

A six session pitching clinic sponsored by the Trevor Frederickson Memorial Fund wrapped up March 29. Zach McCool, Manager and Baseball Director at MVP Sports in Des Moines, coached the clinic aimed at 3rd through 9th grade boys. photo

McCool, a 2007 West Delaware High School and 2011 University of Iowa graduate, earned a long list of academic and athletic achievements during his high school and college careers. Just a few of McCool’s baseball accomplishments include one West Delaware Offensive and two Defensive MVP awards, three 1st Team WA Mac All-Conference infielder selections, two 1st team and one 2nd team IHSBCA All-District team selections, two 1st Team IHSBCA 3A All-State Team 2nd baseman recognitions, an Iowa High School Baseball All-Star Series selection, one 1st team and one 2nd team Iowa Newspaper Association All-State Infielder listing, and a Collegiate Baseball Pre-Season All American listing. His success continued in college where he holds three school records in addition to being honored as an All-Big Ten 3rd baseman.

“The Atlantic Little League has been working hard to increase participation. Bringing in someone as experienced and talented as Zach to work with some of the kids is just something the Trevor Frederickson Memorial Fund can do to support that effort,” said Melanie Petty, Fund Representative. “Zach really interacted with the kids. It was fun to watch.”

To date, over $100,000 has been given back to the community in Frederickson’s memory. The Fund’s only fundraiser, the annual T-Fred Memorial Golf Tournament, will be held Saturday, August 8 at Atlantic’s Nishna Hills Golf Course. Organizers invite anyone interested in the Fund or its tournament to follow local media or like the Trevor Frederickson Memorial Fund on Facebook for more information.

Wainwright to start for Cardinals on opening night

Sports

April 1st, 2015 by Ric Hanson

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Adam Wainwright pitched into the seventh inning in St. Louis’ 3-2 loss to Miami on Tuesday, and manager Mike Matheny said the ace right-hander will start for the Cardinals on opening night against the Cubs. Wainwright allowed two runs and eight hits while throwing 93 pitches in 6 2-3 innings. He was slowed by an abdominal injury early in spring training.

Sunday’s game in Chicago will be Wainwright’s third consecutive opening start and No. 4 overall. Wainwright says it’s “really a validation for the work that you put in.” Ichiro Suzuki went 2 for 2 and drove in a run for Miami. He also made a sliding catch in center field. Henderson Alvarez, who will start on opening day for the Marlins, allowed one run in six innings.

Olympic Champ Gabby Douglas’ Family to get Reality Show

Sports

March 31st, 2015 by Jim Field

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Olympic women’s gymnastics champion Gabrielle Douglas can add another item to her resume: TV star.

The defending all-around gold medalist and her family will be featured in a new Oxygen reality show debuting later this year. The show, which will be co-produced by Douglas and her mother Natalie Hawkins among others, has the working title “Douglas Family Gold.”

The series will follow the 19-year-old’s bid to become the first gymnast in nearly 50 years to repeat as Olympic champion.

Douglas became the first African-American to win the all-around title when she soared to victory at the 2012 London Games as part of the “Fierce Five” that also won the team gold medal.

She returned to training last summer and finished fourth at the Jesolo Cup in Italy last weekend in her first meet in nearly three years.

Chicago Cubs Plan Opening Night Ernie Banks Tribute

Sports

March 31st, 2015 by Jim Field

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs and thousands of fans will honor the late Ernie Banks during the team’s season opener against the St. Louis Cardinals this weekend.

The Hall of Famer known as “Mr. Cub” died in January at the age of 83.

A pregame ceremony and moment of silence are planned along with other tributes throughout Sunday night’s game at Wrigley Field.

Banks’ sons, Joey and Jerry, will throw out the ceremonial first pitches and lead the 7th inning stretch.

The Cubs said in a news release Tuesday that the team will wear No. 14 patches on their home and away jerseys all season.

Fans at Sunday’s game will receive commemorative No. 14 pins.

You can hear the game live on KJAN Sunday night with the pre-game show starting at 6:10 pm.

Big Ten Shines Bright with Final Four in own Backyard

Sports

March 31st, 2015 by Jim Field

MILWAUKEE (AP) — It has been a very good year so far for the Big Ten.

First Ohio State won the first college football playoff in January.

Now the league has Wisconsin and Michigan State advancing to a Final Four, which is hosted in the middle of Big Ten country in Indianapolis.

The Big Ten’s showing had Wisconsin forward Sam Dekker noting that some observers thought the league wasn’t quite as strong this season.

Commissioner Jim Delaney says the league overall wasn’t as successful as hoped for in non-conference play. There was a logjam in league play behind regular-season winner Wisconsin.

Iowa State’s Abdelmassih leaves for spot at St. John’s

Sports

March 31st, 2015 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) – Iowa State assistant Matt Abdelmassih is leaving for a similar position at St. John’s. Abdelmassih, the lone remaining member of coach Fred Hoiberg’s original staff from 2010-11, was a student manager at St. John’s from 2004-07. He announced his departure from Iowa State on his Twitter account Tuesday, saying that St. John’s holds a “special place” in his heart.

Abdelmassih will reunite with the Red Storm and former star Chris Mullin. A person with knowledge of the discussions told The Associated Press on Monday that Mullin has agreed to coach the Red Storm.

Abdelmassih was considered Hoiberg’s top recruiter, helping sign Royce White, DeAndre Kane and current starter Jameel McKay. He says Iowa State will be a “ridiculously hard place to leave.”

Grichuk, Kozma to Fill Final Cardinals Bench Spots

Sports

March 31st, 2015 by Jim Field

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Infielder Pete Kozma and outfielder Randall Grichuk will fill the Cardinals’ final two bench spots on St. Louis’ opening-day roster.

Manager Mike Matheny said Tuesday he liked Kozma’s versatility. The shortstop has also played third, second, some outfield and even practiced catching this spring training. Though he’s known more for his defense than his bat, Kozma began Tuesday with a .425 batting average.

Grichuk, acquired from the Los Angeles Angels, is hitting .262 with four home runs. He’s played all three outfield positions.

“Just watching what he’s done this spring, I couldn’t imagine us leaving Florida without him on this club,” Matheny said.

Stephen Piscotty will begin the season in the minor leagues.
