Chiefs sign team president Donovan to contract extension

Sports

April 29th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Chiefs and team president Mark Donovan have agreed to a contract extension. Terms of the deal, announced Tuesday, were not disclosed. Donovan spent six years with the Eagles before joining the Chiefs as their chief operating officer in 2009. He was promoted to president two years later.

Donovan has been instrumental in updating the fan experience at Arrowhead Stadium, creating new membership programs, implementing new technology and building the season-ticket base. He has also helped to bring several events to the Chiefs’ stadium, including numerous college football games and concerts involving the Rolling Stones and Kenny Chesney.

Before joining the Eagles, Donovan spent several years working as the NFL’s senior director of sales and marketing. He also worked for the NHL and in the private sector.

Cardinals pound Phillies 11-5, Wacha stays unbeaten

Sports

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Matt Carpenter tripled and doubled, and the St. Louis Cardinals had season highs in runs and hits to help Michael Wacha remain unbeaten with an 11-5 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday night. Matt Holliday and Matt Adams each added three hits for the Cardinals, who finished with 15 hits. Jason Heyward reached base four times and Jon Jay drove in two runs.

Wacha (4-0) drove in two runs and pitched 5 2/3 innings to win for the fourth time in four starts. Severino Gonzalez (0-1) yielded seven runs and 10 hits in 2 2/3 innings in his major league debut. The Cardinals reworked their batting order and it paid off. Carpenter was moved out of the leadoff spot for the first time in nearly two years and, batting second, tripled and scored in the first inning and added an RBI double in the fifth.

HOUSTON (AP) — James Harden scored 28 points and the Houston Rockets advanced to the NBA’s Western Conference semifinals for the first time since 2009 by downing the Dallas Mavericks 103-94. Terrance Jones scored 10 of his 15 points in the final period and helped the Rockets stay ahead after the Mavericks got within three with five minutes remaining. Dwight Howard had 18 points and 19 rebounds for Houston, while Josh Smith delivered 20 points.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The San Antonio Spurs have grabbed a 3-2 lead in the NBA’s Western Conference quarterfinals by downing the Clippers 111-107 in Los Angeles. Tim Duncan had team highs of 21 points and 11 rebounds to help the Spurs win their second straight in L.A. since dropping the series opener. Blake Griffin hit a short jumper that would have given the Clippers a 109-108 lead with about five seconds remaining, but the basket was waved off by an offensive goaltending call on DeAndre Jordan.

BALTIMORE (AP) — The rioting in Baltimore is prompting the Orioles and Chicago White Sox to play Wednesday’s game in what is believed to be the first contest without fans in major league baseball’s 145-season history. The unrest caused the first two games of the Orioles-White Sox series to be postponed and will lead the Birds to play their three-game weekend series against the Rays at Tropicana Field instead of Camden Yards. Schools were closed Tuesday and the mayor imposed a 10 p.m.-to-5 a.m. curfew following Monday’s riots a few miles northeast of Oriole Park.

DETROIT (AP) — Former Detroit Tigers and Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Kirk Gibson has announced he’s been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. The 1988 National League MVP was hired to broadcast Tigers games for Fox Sports Detroit after being fired as manager of the Diamondbacks last September. He had not been in the broadcast booth since opening day April 6 while undergoing tests.

ATLANTA (AP) — The Washington Nationals pulled off Tuesday’s best major league comeback by turning a 9-1 deficit into a 13-12 win over the Braves in Atlanta. Dan Uggla (UHG’-lah) capped his five-RBI performance by belting a go-ahead, three-run homer with one out in the ninth. Jose Lobaton (LOH’-bah-tohn) also smacked a three-run homer, and Denard Span was 5-for-6 with a solo shot and four runs scored to help the Nationals end a six-game losing streak.

Cyclones Add Guard Nick Noskowiak

Sports

April 28th, 2015 by Jim Field

AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State men’s basketball program has announced that top-100 guard Nick Noskowiak (nuh-sko-WE-ack) has signed a financial aid agreement to join the team for the 2015-16 season.

Noskowiak, a 6-2, 180-pounder, originally signed with Marquette in the fall but was released from his letter of intent and will be eligible immediately.

The Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, native is widely considered a top-100 prep player, earning a top ranking of 75th by ESPN.com. He was also ranked 79th by 247sports.com and CBSSports.com and 90th by FoxSports.com.

“Nick possesses great size and playmaking ability from the point guard position,” assistant coach T.J. Otzelberger said. “But he isn’t locked into one spot because his ability will allow us to play him and multiple positions. He’s a really good 3-point shooter and someone that we are excited to add to our program.”

Noskowiak averaged 20 points for Sun Prairie High School as a senior. He scored a season-high 43 points in the Cardinals win against Beloit Memorial.

Noskowiak’s junior year saw him earn all-state first-team honors after scoring 23.7 points per game and helping the Cardinals to the sectional finals.

He was a member of Playground Elite on the AAU circuit.

Noskowiak joins Arkansas transfer Nick Babb as newcomers for the Cyclones. Iowa State has two scholarships available for the 2015-16 season.

NIACC’s Walter, Lentz Qualify for National Women’s Golf Tournament

Sports

April 28th, 2015 by Jim Field

!cid_ii_14cfba45adf5bed2ANKENY | The NIACC women’s golf team is sending two golfers to the 2015 NJCAA National Tournament at Longbow Golf Course in Mesa, Arizona, May 11-14.

Savannah Lentz followed up her 81 on Friday with an 85 (44-41) on Saturday at Otter Creek Golf Course, the site of the Region XI women’s golf tournament, finishing tied for eighth with former Bishop Garrigan standout and current DMACC golfer Haley Froehlich with a 166.

Meanwhile, Bailey Walter, a former Atlantic prep, finished 15th with a 182, following up her opening round of 92 with a 90 (46-44) for NIACC on Saturday, grabbing the last qualifying spot for the national tournament.

“I’m really excited for Savannah Lentz and Bailey Walter, a couple of freshmen to make it to the national tournament,” NIACC coach Chris Frenz said. “Savannah has been one of the top golfers in our region all season long and for her to play the way she did in the weather conditions we’ve had the past two days is outstanding. I believe she will do very well at the national tournament. It’s always tough there because all women’s programs – Division I, II and III – all compete against each other. So it’s an uneven playing field, but she hasn’t back down from any challenge yet, I know she’ll put forth a great effort in a couple of weeks.

“Bailey really hung in there (Saturday). She was just battling herself all day long but she kept plugging away and actually made the cut by two strokes. She has a good enough game to do well at nationals too. She just has to remain confident.”

Kaitlin Koob tied for 16th with a 184, shooting a 94 (50-44) on Saturday, Josie Leyh was 20th with a 190, including a 96 (48-48) on Saturday, and Carlie Eckenrod was 22nd with a 198, shooting a 99 (52-47) on Saturday.

“I feel for Kaitlin because she really played better than her score indicated and to be that close and know you had a good chance to make it really hurts,” Frenz said. “She’s had a great two-year run here at NIACC (making the national tournament last year) and I’m really going to miss her.”

NIACC finished fourth with a 722, shooting a 365 on Saturday after a 357 on Friday.

Iowa Western won the team title with a 630, shooting a 312 on Saturday. The Reivers finished 23 strokes ahead of DMACC.

Individually, Iowa Central’s Julie Laisney – the leader coming into Saturday’s play with a 74 – finished with a 142, four strokes better than Iowa Western’s Damla Bilgic.
