UNDATED (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals say injured ace Adam Wainwright is out for the season because of a torn left Achilles. General manager John Mozeliak made the announcement Monday at Busch Stadium. Wainwright will have surgery later this week. Wainwright was hurt while batting Saturday in Milwaukee.

This is the second major injury of Wainwright’s career. The right-hander missed the 2011 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery. The Cardinals have made it to the NL Championship Series in each of the last four seasons. They lead the NL Central this year.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Cole Hamels won for the first time in seven starts dating to last September, and Ben Revere’s two-run double in the seventh inning was the go-ahead hit for the Philadelphia Phillies in a 4-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday night.

Hamels (1-2) and John Lackey (1-1) both went seven innings. Hamels had a season-best nine strikeouts and allowed just four hits, while the Phillies put just two runners in scoring position before their three-run seventh. Hamels had been 0-4 with a 3.23 ERA since Sept. 23, receiving four total runs of support while he was in the game. He’s 2-2 in seven career starts at Busch Stadium, the other win coming on Aug. 3, 2006, and this was his first victory over the Cardinals since 2007.

AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State men’s basketball program has announced the addition of Nick Babb, a transfer from Arkansas.

Babb, a 6-5 guard, played sparingly in 26 games as a freshman at Arkansas. He scored a career-high five points against Wake Forest and Georgia, while playing 4.8 minutes per game for the Razorbacks, who advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament.

The brother of former Cyclone and current Boston Celtic Chris Babb, Nick Babb prepped at Arlington Martin High School in Arlington, Texas. He was a Class 5A All-State honoree as a senior when he averaged 16 points, 8.4 rebounds and eight assists for the Warriors.

“We are excited to have Nick join our program,” assistant coach Cornell Mann said. “He’s not only a tremendous person, but a great teammate as well. Nick fits well with what we do with mismatches. He has the ability to defend and play at a high level athletically. Nick will be a guy that we can plug in at multiple spots.”

Babb was rated as the 17th-best player in the state of Texas by ESPN.com and No. 167 overall by 247sports.com.

The 17th ranked Iowa Hawkeye baseball team completed a sweep of Nebraska on Sunday. Tyler Peyton bounced back from a foot injury to pitch eight and a third innings as Iowa claimed a 5-1 win in the series finale. The Hawkeyes rallied from a 2-0 deficit to claim Sunday’s opener 3-2. Junior catcher Jimmy Frankos drove in the game winner with a two out single in the bottom of the tenth inning.

Iowa has reached the 30 victory plateau for the second straight year. The first time that has happened since 1989 and 1990. They are 13-2 iun the Big Ten, a half game behind league leading Illinois.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a left Achilles and left ankle injury, the team says, and could be out much longer. The 33-year-old pitcher was injured while batting in the top of the fifth inning over a 5-3 win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday night. The injuries occurred after Wainwright broke from the batter’s box on a fifth-inning popup.
