Changes to softball game sites and soccer classification announced by IGHSAU

Sports

October 22nd, 2015 by admin

The Board of Directors for the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union met on Wednesday and announced a couple of changes.  Adjustments were made in regards to sites for regional final softball games and for soccer classification. Details from the Athletic Union are listed below.

Upon recommendation from the IGHSAU Softball Advisory Committee and approval by the IGHSAU Board of Directors, 2016 regional final softball games in all classes (1A – 5A) will be played on the home field of the highest seeded team remaining of the two regional final teams.  In order to secure the privilege to host, sites must have adequate lighting, and meet certain other minimum facility requirements.  The Committee and Directors believe this is positive step that will increase excitement and attendance at these state qualifying games.

The Board of Directors of the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union approved a change in soccer classification at its October 21st meeting.

Beginning with the 2016 soccer season; Class 3A will consist of the 40 largest soccer schools; Class 2A will consist of the next largest 48 schools, while the remaining schools will play in Class 1A. Prior to this change, Class 3A consisted of the 32 largest soccer schools while 2A consisted of the next largest 48.

A tentative soccer classification will be posted on the IGHSAU website soon.

Chiefs’ Charles has surgery to repair torn ACL

Sports

October 22nd, 2015 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles has had surgery to repair the torn ACL in his right knee, the first step toward what he hopes is a return to the field by the start of next season. The surgery was performed Tuesday by orthopedist Dr. James Andrews.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Wednesday that everything went according to plan and that “all reports are good.” Charles also posted a photo of him in the hospital on Instagram with a caption that read, “Surgery went well (and) now the road to recovery begins.”

Charles was hurt early in the third quarter of a loss to Chicago on Oct. 11. Charcandrick West and Knile Davis split the bulk of his carries last week in Minnesota.
Kansas City plays Pittsburgh on Sunday. You can hear the game following church services Sunday morning, here on KJAN.

CHICAGO (AP) — The New York Mets are going to the World Series for the first time since 2000. Lucas Duda launched a three-run home run and Travis d’Arnaud followed with a solo shot in the first inning. Daniel Murphy set a major league record by homering in his sixth straight postseason game as the Mets finished a four-game sweep of the Chicago Cubs with a 8-3 rout at Wrigley Field.

TORONTO (AP)— The American League Championship Series is going back to Kansas City. The Toronto Blue Jays overpowered Kansas City 7-1 to cut the Royals’ lead to 3-2 in the best-of-seven ALCS. Game 6 is Friday — David Price goes for Toronto against Yordano Ventura of the Royals.

CLEVELAND (AP)— The Cleveland Cavaliers and free-agent forward Tristan Thompson have agreed in principle on a five-year, $82 million contract, ending his holdout. Thompson helped the Cavs get to the NBA Finals last season when he filled in for an injured Kevin Love during the playoffs.

SAN ANTONIO (AP)— The San Antonio Spurs have waived guard Jimmer Fredette (freh-DEHT’) among four cuts. Fredette was the 10th overall pick by Sacramento in 2011 after a sensational career at BYU. He has struggled in the NBA, bouncing around to Chicago and New Orleans as well before landing the tryout with San Antonio.

BOSTON (AP) — Claude Giroux’s (zheh-ROOZ’) second goal, on a power play 2:09 into overtime, rallied the Philadelphia Flyers to a 5-4 win over the Boston Bruins. The Flyers overcame a two-goal deficit in the third period before Giroux one-timed a shot past Tuukka (TOO’-kah) Rask from the left circle for the game-winner.

Touching photo shows TCU quarterback, with Iowa State fan, 7

Sports

October 20th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — A touching photo of TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin greeting a 7-year-old Iowa State fan who uses a wheelchair has drawn praise for the player. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram photo was snapped Saturday before No. 3 TCU beat Iowa State 45-21 in Ames. Boykin took a moment, before the pregame coin toss, to speak to Abby Faber. She wore an Iowa State jersey as Boykin leaned down and asked, “What’s your name?”

Jenny Faber said Tuesday, in a phone interview from Ankeny, Iowa, that she was unfamiliar with Boykin but now her family will “be following him the rest of the season.” Faber says her daughter was so excited to get to shake a player’s hand.

The girl has a form of cerebral palsy.

Familiar faces ready to star (again) in Big 12 this season

Sports

October 20th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas is the preseason pick to win its 12th consecutive Big 12 title. All-American forward Perry Ellis opted to return for his senior season, and he’ll be joined by talented guards Wayne Selden, Frank Mason and Devonte Graham, all players who logged crucial minutes as the Jayhawks rolled to another conference championship last season.

But there is plenty of talent around the league. Oklahoma returns All-American guard Buddy Hield, who may have been a first-round pick had he declared for the draft after last season. He’ll be joined by fellow seniors Isaiah Cousins and Ryan Spangler, who also started all 35 games for Oklahoma a year ago.

Iowa State may have a new coach in Steve Prohm, but Georges Niang, Jameel McKay and Naz Long are seniors with high expectations.
