ST. LOUIS (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina will try to play in the NL division series wearing a splint to protect his injured left thumb. The All-Star catcher met with a hand specialist on Monday and it was determined that a ligament injury hasn’t healed. He’ll test the splint in workouts the next few days. Molina was hurt on Sept. 20 making a tag at the plate and hasn’t played since then.
General manager John Mozeliak said Molina was feeling stronger and added he was optimistic the 33-year-old would be on the postseason roster. Backup Tony Cruz would be the starter if Molina is unable to play. The Cardinals on Friday night will host the winner of the wild-card game between the Cubs and Pirates.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Last season was a landmark year for basketball in the state of Iowa, as three Division I teams reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time. Drake hopes to crash that party soon.
The Bulldogs, who’ve been to the NCAA Tournament just once since 1971, are optimistic they can inch closer to postseason play in 2015-16. The “Big Dance” might be a stretch, but a run at .500 after two losing seasons under coach Ray Giacoletti is certainly a possibility.
Drake, which went 9-22 last year, opens at Tulane on Nov. 16.
AMES, Iowa (AP) — Mike Warren is breaking out at just the right time for Iowa State. The Cyclones running back has rushed for 301 yards in the last two games, including a 175-yard effort in last Saturday’s victory over Kansas, the most ever by an Iowa State freshman.
He could play a key role in the weeks ahead because the Cyclones’ next three opponents are the Big 12’s top three offensive teams — Texas Tech, TCU and Baylor. Iowa State’s defense could depend on the Cyclone ground game to chew up clock and keep those offenses off the field.
Warren has rocketed to sixth in the league in rushing after carrying only nine times for 28 yards in the Cyclones’ first two games. He’s averaging 6.9 yards per carry for the season.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — Interim Illinois coach Bill Cubit says he doubts injured running back Josh Ferguson will be able to play Saturday against No. 22 Iowa.
Cubit said Monday that the starting back was due to see a doctor later Monday. But Cubit said that he wasn’t optimistic the right-shoulder injury would allow Ferguson to play.
Illinois (4-1, 1-0 Big Ten) lost Ferguson in the first quarter of last Saturday’s 14-13 win over Nebraska. The senior has 397 yards and three touchdowns on 71 carries.
Freshman Ke’Shawn Vaughn took over for him Saturday and was the only other Illini back to carry the ball. Vaughn had 98 yards on 24 carries.
Cubit said Illinois will need little-used junior Henry Enyenihi to help pick up the rushing load at Iowa (5-0, 1-0).
ATLANTA (AP) — Matt Wisler pitched four-hit ball over 8 2/3 innings, and the Atlanta Braves beat St. Louis 2-0 Sunday for a doubleheader sweep that sent Cardinals’ batters to the playoffs with a 27-inning scoreless streak. St. Louis was held to seven hits in the doubleheader, which included a 6-0 loss to Shelby Miller in the first game that ended Miller’s 24-start winless streak. The Braves won 4-0 Friday.
Wisler (8-8) won each of his last three starts, allowing a combined three runs. Pinch-hitter Brandon Moss doubled with one out in the ninth to become the Cardinals’ first runner in scoring position off Wisler. Jon Jay hit a groundout to first, Tommy Pham walked and Edwin Jackson struck out Randal Grichuk to end the game.
St. Louis, which won its third straight NL Central title, opens the Division Series at home Friday against the Chicago Cubs or Pittsburgh.
CINCINNATI (AP) — A man from Springfield, Missouri, collapsed in a restroom at Paul Brown Stadium on Sunday during a game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Cincinnati Bengals and was pronounced dead at a hospital, a Bengals spokesman said.
The man’s identity wasn’t released, pending notification of his family. Bengals spokesman Bob Bedinghaus said the fan had some type of pre-existing medical issue. Police and paramedics tried to revive the man at the stadium. He was taken to Christ Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Bedinghaus said.
CINCINNATI (AP) – Andy Dalton added to his streak of impressive game and big plays, throwing a 55-yard touchdown pass on the run, and the Cincinnati Bengals stayed unbeaten with a 36-21 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. The Bengals (4-0) matched the third-best start in franchise history, two wins shy of the club record.
Dalton has been the thread throughout the wins, ascending to the top of the AFC passer list. He had another spot-on day, completing 17 of 24 for 321 yards with the long touchdown pass to Brandon Tate during a scramble.
It was another rough day all around for Kansas City (1-3). Alex Smith was sacked five times, the Chiefs settled for Cairo Santos’ club-record seven field goals, and the defense couldn’t keep up with another one of the NFL’s top passers.
ATLANTA (AP) – Shelby Miller ended his 24-start winless streak, holding his former Cardinals teammates to three hits through eight innings and leading the Atlanta Braves over St. Louis 6-0 in Sunday’s doubleheader opener. Miller (6-17) struck out seven and walked three. He had been 0-16 since winning at Miami on May 17 despite a 3.83 ERA in that span.
Adonis Garcia hit two homers and Andrelton Simmons added a two-run drive. Atlanta has 100 homers this season, fewest in the majors. St. Louis, which won its third straight NL Central title, open sthe Division Series at home Friday against the Chicago Cubs or Pittsburgh. John Lackey (13-10) allowed three runs over four innings in a postseason tuneup.
