Chiefs GM John Dorsey defends Justin Houston case

March 30th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Kansas City Chiefs general manager John Dorsey defended the club’s handling of Pro Bowl linebacker Justin Houston, who underwent surgery on his ACL last month and could miss the upcoming season. In his first comments since news of the surgery became public, Dorsey said the Chiefs’ medical staff and renowned surgeon Dr. James Andrews worked in concert in diagnosing and treating Houston’s injury.

Houston hurt his left knee against Buffalo in November, and at the time he was diagnosed with a hyperextension. He returned for the playoffs but was so limited that he was rendered ineffective. He ultimately had surgery to repair the ligament in mid-February.

Wainwright’s, Strasburg’s final spring starts rained out

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) – Rain cut short Adam Wainwright’s and Stephen Strasburg’s final spring starts, canceling the game between the Washington Nationals and the St. Louis Cardinals in the top of the fourth inning Tuesday. Wainwright allowed the lone run moments before lightning halted play. The Cardinals’ opening day starter says he wasn’t as crisp as he would have liked to be in his final spring start.

Nationals manager Dusty Baker liked what he saw from Strasburg. Tuesday marked the second straight rainout for the Nationals, and the forecast for Wednesday’s Grapefruit League finale against the New York Mets in Port St. Lucie isn’t promising. Nor is the extended forecast for Friday’s and Saturday’s exhibition games against Minnesota in Washington.

Niang, Uthoff honored as AP All-Americans

Whenever talk of the best college basketball player this season came up so did two names: Denzel Valentine of Michigan State and Buddy Hield of Oklahoma.

They were unanimous selections Tuesday to The Associated Press’ 2015-16 All-America team.

Both led their teams to successful seasons and their numbers lifted them above all the other players.

Valentine, the Big Ten player of the year, averaged 19.4 points, 7.6 rebounds and 7.6 assists, while Hield, the player of the year in the Big 12, averaged 25 points, 5.6 rebounds and 3.0 assists.

“I don’t know many guys that have improved in every aspect of the game like he has,” Spartans coach Tom Izzo said of the 6-foot-5 Valentine, the school’s first All-America since Draymond Green in 2012. His importance to Michigan State showed when he missed four games during the season with a knee injury.

Hield, Oklahoma’s first All-America since Blake Griffin in 2009, became a highlight reel staple with his ability to shoot the ball from long range and with defenders right on him. The 6-foot-4 Hield shot 46.4 percent from 3-point range.

“He has had a fantastic year and has been very consistent,” Sooners coach Lon Kruger said of the Bahamas native who was a third team selection last season. “He worked hard and has that passion and focus that makes him what he is.”

In the age when one-and-dones usually dominate the college basketball landscape, Valentine and Hield were joined on the All-America team by fellow seniors Brice Johnson of North Carolina and Malcolm Brogdon of Virginia. Sophomore Tyler Ulis of Kentucky rounded out the team. The 2013-14 team had four seniors and a freshman.

Valentine and Hield both received 65 first-team votes from the national media panel that selects the weekly poll.

Seven-foot sophomore Jakob Poeltl of Utah led the second team with 41 first-team votes. He was joined by LSU freshman Ben Simmons, Kansas senior Perry Ellis, Providence junior Kris Dunn and Iowa State senior Georges Niang.

The third team consists of Grayson Allen of Duke, Kevin “Yogi” Ferrell of Indiana, Jarrod Uthoff of Iowa, Kay Felder of Oakland and Jamal Murray of Kentucky.

The voting was done before the NCAA Tournament.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Chiefs safety Husain Abdullah announced his retirement after seven seasons on Monday, adding his name to the growing list of players who have walked away from the NFL because of health concerns. Husain said on Instagram that he sustained his fifth concussion this past season, which sidelined him for five weeks. He said there were many factors in his decision with “personal health being foremost.”

Abdullah joined the NFL as an undrafted free agent out of Washington State, and spent four productive seasons with the Minnesota Vikings. He walked away in his prime to make a pilgrimage to Mecca, then returned after one season to earn a roster spot with the Chiefs. He proved to be a dependable safety for Kansas City the past three seasons.

Realmuto’s bloop pushes Marlins past Cardinals, 4-2

Sports

March 27th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — J.T. Realmuto’s two-out, two-RBI bloop single in the sixth broke a 2-all tie and propelled the Miami Marlins to a 4-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday. Realmuto lofted what normally would have been a routine fly ball to right-center field, but Cardinals’ right fielder Stephen Piscotty had been positioned to guard the line moments earlier. The ball barely eluded diving center fielder Tommy Pham, allowing Giancarlo Stanton and Martin Prado to score.

The Marlins’ comeback overshadowed a strong start by Jaime Garcia. The Cardinals’ lefty didn’t allow a hit until the fifth inning, when Miami struck for two runs. Marlins ace Jose Fernandez spent much of the afternoon working on off-speed pitches. He allowed five hits and walked three while striking out six in 3 2/3 innings.
