Wainwright wilder than usual in spring debut, Cards top Mets

Sports

March 7th, 2016 by admin

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright struggled with his focus in his first start since last April and Matt Holliday made his professional debut at first base Monday as St. Louis beat a New York Mets split squad 9-4.

Wainwright walked three in two scoreless innings. He gave up two hits and struck out two.

Wainwright tore his Achilles tendon while running out of the batter’s box on April 25. He returned from the disabled list late last season but only pitched in relief. By making his first Grapefruit League start in this game, he’s on pace to pitch the opener on April 3.

Holliday made his spring debut and neatly blocked a pickoff throw from Wainwright that bounced. The veteran left fielder spent the early part of camp learning to play first base, though the Cardinals don’t expect to use him much there this year.

Mets starter Steven Matz breezed through the first two innings before allowing a run in the third. He struck out the side in the second on only 12 pitches.

Cardinals to sell majority interest of Memphis Redbirds

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals are selling majority interest in the team’s Triple-A affiliate in Memphis, Tennessee.

The team said Monday that pending approval from the Pacific Coast League, Peter Freund will become majority owner. Freund is principal owner of Trinity Baseball Holdings and is president of Trinity Packaging Corp, a plastics manufacturer based in Armonk, New York.

The deal is expected to close by April 1. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Cardinals chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. says the team believes partnering with Freund will strengthen the Memphis Redbirds and help further revitalize baseball in Memphis.

Freund is a minority owner of the New York Yankees, principal owner of the Philadelphia Phillies’ Class-A team in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, and co-owner of the Yankees’ Class-A team in Charleston, South Carolina.

Sports

March 7th, 2016 by admin

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State senior Georges Niang has become the school’s first two-time All-American after being named to the USA Today’s All-America Third Team. Niang is the first Cyclone to earn a spot on a first, second or third All-America team (honorable mention not included) twice in a career.

Niang, who earned All-Big 12 First Team accolades yesterday, leads the Cyclones with 19.4 points, while also grabbing a career-best 6.2 rebounds. He is the only player in the nation, and the first since Creighton’s Doug McDermott in 2013-14, to average 19 points and six rebounds, while shooting 50 percent from the field and 80 percent from the free-throw line.

Niang has scored in double figures in all 31 games, including 13 games with 20 or more points.

The Methuen, Massachusetts, native, is third on Iowa State’s scoring list with 2,111 points and he is the only player in school history with 2,000 points, 600 rebounds and 400 assists.

Niang was recently named to the Wooden Award Final Ballot for the second time in his career.

Niang and the Cyclones return to action Thursday at the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship. Iowa State plays Oklahoma in the quarterfinals, which will be televised by ESPNU at 8 p.m.

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — St. Louis shortstop Jhonny Peralta injured his left thumb and could miss the first two months of the season.

Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said Peralta is expected to return to St. Louis for a second opinion of what he said may be a damaged ulnar collateral ligament.

Peralta hurt his glove hand while fielding a ground ball during Saturday’s exhibition game against Miami. Mozeliak said Peralta felt pain but wasn’t too worried. Peralta didn’t play on Sunday and left the Cardinals’ complex prior to Monday’s game against the New York Mets.
