Top-seeded Kansas opens tournament play vs. Austin Peay

Sports

March 17th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Top-ranked Kansas was the best team in arguably the best league in America. The Jayhawks (30-4), winners of the Big 12’s regular season and tournament titles, open NCAA Tournament play Thursday (today) in Des Moines, against Austin Peay (18-17) as the Number 1 seed in the South Region.

But after second-round losses in each of its last two tournaments as a Number 2 seed, Kansas is more focused on the first weekend than the Final Four. They face a Governors team that made a school-record 16 3-pointers to beat UT-Martin in the Ohio Valley Conference tourney to clinch its first NCAA bid in eight years.

He was a major threat for Oklahoma from 3-point range, connecting on 47.3 percent of his shots. His 124 3-point baskets were the most in the nation.

Valentine is on pace to become the first player to average 19 points, seven rebounds and seven assists since assists were recognized as an official statistic by the NCAA in 1983-84. The 6-5 guard from Lansing, Mich., led the Big Ten in overall scoring with a 19.6 average and assists with a 7.5 mark for the Spartans.

Brogdon, a 6-5 guard from Atlanta and a second-team USBWA All-American a season ago, was named player of the year and defensive player of the year by the Atlantic Coast Conference. He led Virginia in scoring with a career-high 18.4 points per game and headlined the Cavaliers’ third-ranked defense nationally, which yielded 59.6 points per game.

North Carolina’s Johnson was a unanimous selection to the ACC’s first team and runner-up to Brogdon for conference player of the year. Johnson, a 6-10 forward from Orangeburg, S.C., led the ACC in rebounding (10.8), field goal percentage (.606) and double-doubles (19).

Simmons, a 6-10 forward from Melbourne, Australia, leads all Division I freshmen with 11.9 rebounds per game and was third among all freshmen in scoring with a 19.6 average. He is trying to become the first player in the last 20 years to average at least 15 points, 10 rebounds and five assists per game.

The USBWA All-America teams are voted on by members of the USBWA, which is comprised of over 900 sportswriters and sports journalists who cover college basketball for newspapers, magazines and websites.

Jhonny Peralta returns to Cardinals camp after thumb surgery

Sports

March 14th, 2016 by admin

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Jhonny Peralta has returned to the St. Louis Cardinals training site, wearing a cast and with his left arm in a sling. There’s still no updated timetable for the shortstop’s return from thumb surgery.

Peralta said Monday he’ll be in the cast for two weeks and then stitches will come out. Before the surgery Wednesday, the team estimated he’d be out two to three months.

Jedd Gyorko is the likely starter at shortstop until Peralta returns. Cuban defector Aledmys Diaz also is getting a long look.

Iowa State a 4 seed in the NCAA Tourney

Sports

March 14th, 2016 by admin

The Iowa State Cyclones earned a 4 seed in the NCAA Tournament and will square off with 13th seeded Iona on Thursday in Denver. For Cyclones head coach Steve Prohm, there’s no overlooking a lower seeded team

“I’ve been a 13 seed when at Murray and we beat Vandy, a four seed. I don’t think you can overlook anybody in this tournament. I think our guys are well aware of that.
I put something on the board earlier before we came up here about forget the past, focus on what lies ahead and that’s Iona.”

Prohn expects nothing different from his team in terms of preparation.

“We’ll prepare for them like we’re preparing for Oklahoma or Kansas and our guys attention to detail will be the same like trying to beat Kansas on Big Monday. It’s a great opportunity but you can’t get to the second round until you win the first round.”

According to the head coach, the four seed was about where he expected to be.

“It’s a blessing to be in this tournament, only 36 at large teams. I thought we’d be a 4 or 5 seed. I think the 4 seed just shows that we had 8 top-50 wins, the seventh most in the country, and we played in the number one conference in the country this year and had a lot of really good wins.”

Tipoff on Thursday is scheduled for 1pm.
