CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Colton Howell threw two touchdown passes and Marcus Weymiller ran for two scores as Northern Iowa ran over Indiana State, 41-3 Saturday to secure a second-place finish in the Missouri Valley Conference.

The Panthers expect to earn the school’s 19th playoff berth, as an at-large team, when the FCS Playoff Committee announces the 24-team field on Sunday.

Howell, filling in for injured starter Eli Dunne, hit Daurice Fountain with two first-half touchdown passes, the second from 23-yards out, to stake Northern Iowa (7-4, 6-2) to a 27-3 halftime lead. Howell finished 17 of 26 for 216 yards passing. Weymiller had scoring runs covering 22 and 5 yards and finished with 105 yards rushing on 29 carries.

The Sycamores (0-11, 0-8) drove 48 yards in five plays with the game’s opening possession and Jerry Nunez kicked a 48-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead. Indiana State finished with just 247 yards of total offense.

CONWAY, S.C. (AP) — Nick Weiler-Babb had 20 points, 14 rebounds and eight assists Friday to help Iowa State hold off Tulsa 80-78 and reach the championship game of the relocated Puerto Rico Tip-Off.

The Cyclones (2-2) blew most of a 16-point lead in the final 10 minutes but did just enough down the stretch to hang on for a second win in as many days.

Tulsa (2-2) got as close as 72-71 on Sterling Taplin’s layup with 1:12 left, but Jakolby Long answered with a banked-in straightaway basket with 48.6 seconds left to keep Iowa State in front.

Donovan Jackson closed the game out by hitting four straight free throws in the final 18 seconds. He finished with 24 points, while Long scored a career-high 17 with four first-half 3-pointers.

Junior Etou had 25 points while DaQuan Jeffries added 23 for Tulsa, which shot 65 percent after halftime.

LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) — Reed Timmer scored 29 points and hit six of Drake’s 15 3-pointers as the Bulldogs rallied to beat Wake Forest 77-74 on Friday night in the Paradise Jam.

It was moved from St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands to the Vines Center in Lynchburg due to damage from Hurricanes Irma and Maria.

Graham Woodward added 20 points for Drake (2-0), which used an 11-0 run to erase a 10-point deficit late in the second half.

The Demon Deacons (0-3) had a chance to tie in the closing seconds, but Bryant Crawford’s 3-pointer was off the mark.

Wake Forest used a 10-0 run to open a 60-49 lead midway through the second half. After an exchange of baskets, the Bulldogs scored the next 11 points with Woodward capping the rally with a four-point play. The lead changed hands several times until Timmer hit a pair of free throws with 3:55 remaining.

Doral Moore led the Demon Deacons with 17 points and 17 rebounds. Chaundee Brown added 12 points.

Small ball may be the ticket for Atlantic girls hoops in 2017-18

Sports

November 17th, 2017 by admin

The Atlantic girls basketball team has the task of replacing six seniors for the 2017-18 campaign. The answer may be playing a smaller lineup and hoping that inexperienced players can grow up fast.

The Trojans lost some size down low with the graduation of Catherine Leonard and McKenna DenBeste. Leonard led the team with 11.7 points per game and 221 rebounds last season. DenBeste was the second leading rebounder with 127 on the season to go along with 5.2 points per game. Atlantic Head Coach Kelly Juhl says the makeup of this team will be different with a little less height overall.

Atlantic does return some experience in the backcourt with Baylee Newell back who averaged 9.2 points per game, along with McKenzie Waters, Alyssa Ginther, and Riley Seufert. Filter in some of the newcomers and Coach Juhl thinks their guards have the chance to have a big season.

Cheyenne Elliot along with Aly Anderson and Heidi Williams will be counted on for production around the basket. The Trojans open up the season next Monday on the road against the Carroll Tigers and will follow that up with a home game on Tuesday night against Denison-Schleswig. Coach Juhl says they are excited to get the season started.

We’ll have coverage of those first two games for the Trojans on KJAN. Join us Monday night for the game with Carroll, pregame at 7:15pm and tip-off scheduled for approximately 7:30pm

Former Trojans Markham and Holmes earn First Team honors from IIAC

Former Atlantic Trojans Sam Markham and Brendan Holmes earned First Team Honors from the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for their performance on the gridiron this season.

Markham, a Central College senior, was a First Team honoree as a wide receiver for the third straight season. In eight conference games this season Markham averaged 116.8 yards per game.  He tied for the league lead with 11 touchdown catches and had 53 catches total for 934 yards. He set the school record with four touchdown grabs against Loras, a game in which he had 5 total grabs for 201 yards.

Holmes, a sophomore for Simpson College, was a First Team selection as a defensive back. Holmes racked up 35 solo tackles in conference play as part of 70 overall tackles in the league. Holmes was also part of 6 takeaways for the Storm defense with 5 interceptions and 1 fumble recovery against league opponents.

IKM-Manning alum Joe Thraen was and honorable mention selection as a Senior offensive lineman for Buena Vista.

Nunge leads Iowa past Grambling, 85-74 for 3rd straight win

Sports

November 17th, 2017 by admin

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Jack Nunge scored a career-high 17 points in his third collegiate game and Iowa cruised past Grambling State, 85-74, for its third-straight win Thursday night.

Isaiah Moss and Tyler Cook (15 points each) added some scoring help for the Hawkeyes (3-0), who needed second-half momentum to pull away from the Tigers.

Grambling State took a 59-56 lead off Anthony Gaston’s 3-pointer with 10:53 left in the game, capping a 7-0 run in 48 seconds. Moss hit a 3-pointer of his own to tie the game at 59, sparking a 14-0 run. During that stretch, the Tigers missed 9-straight field goals.

Luka Garza was a key contributor during that stretch, both offensively and defensively. Garza finished a rebound shy of his second-consecutive double-double (13 points and 9 rebounds).

Axel Mpoyo and Gaston had 21 and 16 points, respectively, for Grambling State (0-2), which hung around longer than Iowa would have liked.

The Tigers scored 21 points off 13 Hawkeye turnovers, the second-most giveaways committed by Iowa this season. Forwards Tyler Cook and Cordell Pemsl each turned the ball over three times.
